First US PS3 Commercial: The Wait.

I was waiting for the PS3 machine or logo to hover overhead in the sky when I saw those shadows coming...

I don't like all these art-sy commercials, though. People should remember what the ad is for. I don't care that people already know the PS3 brand, how many times have you seen a "memorable" commercial but forgot what they were selling? (It happens alot to many. Just ask the SuperBowl advertisers.)
Hey, maybe whoever makes the next console commercial can combine all three! The backpack kid holding the Wii-mote up in the air while jump roping!
You can't jump rope with only one hand
You can't jump rope with only one hand
Apparently, you didn't see the "Jump In" commercial.
Apparently, you didn't see the "Jump In" commercial.
Well, I meant you cant do it by yourself. I would be pretty impressed if the backpack kid could jump rope while holding the Wii-mote...but idk...sounds tricky.
And for the sake of eltonto, they do have a japanese commerical for the Wii which I thought sucked also.
Ironically, in that Japanese Wii commercial, the Wii was pretty much ALL they showed.

American PS3 ad: Don't show anything related to PS3

Japanese Wii ad: ONLY SHOW THE Wii!

Well, if one were to truly combine the standout elements of the three commercials, you'd end up with 1. Double dutch jump roping (implying that two additional people are actually rotating the ropes), 2. A Wii-mote w/ strap held by a hand, and 3. The shaggy-haired, oversized backpack kid. Put them together, and you have a double dutching kid with a backpack the size of a PS3 holding a Wii-mote.

So... I really don't know why I spelled that all out. There was no point to any of it.

And... post.

Maybe it can be the commercial for the "phantom"
I gave me goose bumps. The music put me in a real mellow mood. I think Sony is trying to say that "Something big is coming".

Finally to the PS3 haters, dead down inside you know the PS3 is going to outsell the Wii and 360 once the quantity gets there. THE WII REMOTE IS NOTHING MORE THAN A MARKETING PLOY IN ORDER TO CHARGE 250.00 FOR A REPACKAGED GAMECUBE WITH MORE RAM. At least you can tell the difference with PS2 graphics and PS3 graphics. Gamecube and Wii games look identical. No difference. Just a gimmick controller to disguise a 5 year old system renamed the Wii. Wii will be the biggest flop ever. People want complex graphics for home systems not simplicity when it comes to on the go gaming.
Complex graphics do not = innovation. Graphical updates have happened every generation since PONG. While the Wiimote may be considered a gimmick to some...paying $250 (with a game) for something new and different instead of paying $500 for better graphics seems like a better deal to me. I'm not saying you shouldn't buy a PS3 or any other system or even that you will like the Wii but it seems people should at very least attempt to try it before calling it a gimmick. Imagine if everyone called the analog stick a gimmick?
I thought it was a good commercial, could have been 100x better if they actually showed the PS3, or atleast the name for longer than a second.

That and the fact that it was too long.
Homer Simpson described this commercial perfectly:

"You take forever to say nothing."
Complex graphics do not = innovation.
It's not just about graphics. What about for AI, physics, level, object and model geometry? How about the fact that the devs are going to have to scale down every multiport game they make, tremendously?

$250 for a gamecube with a gyro lightgun does not impress me, and does not strike me as an innovation either.

It's funny, but of those five points you listed, three were about the graphics (level, object, model geometry), and one could almost be argued as such (physics) though it does indeed have other purposes than "Look, mommy! Ragdolls!"

But as far as multisystem releases go, I can't imagine the Wii getting many.
Trust me if the commercial was about the Wii you guys would be going bonkers over it. THATS MY POINT
Wrong. You have issues or are paranoid.
Yes the N64 was for children with the exception of Golden Eye and a few other games and Sony offered a product that leaned more to the people who have the money in America (adults) and that product was called the "Playstation". I mean seriously before the PSX videogames wasn't exactly a mainstream hobby like it is today.
too hilarious you seriously must be smoking crack. Space invaders pacman mario. these made video games mainstream junior.

you got me there, ill put it this way, i'm not a huge graphics whore by any means but there is a certain depth that i would like to see in the graphics of the games in this gen. I'm not arguing, i'll reserve actual judgement until i can play any of these new toys, & i'd love to try out the WII controller myself, and actually see the gameplay in motion but, as far as next gen tech goes, it looks to be woefully inadequite.

Having played Boxing and Bowling, I have to say it's pretty fun. Not fun enough to "convert" people I'm sure, but fun enough for me to confirm that I definitely want one. I'm also on a budget, so both the 360 and PS3 are out of reach until price drops, though I definitely will pick them both up once they are in an acceptable range.

They did a good job letting people know that they'll be disappointed this holiday season because most of them won't be getting a PS3.

The only cool part about that commercial was at the end when the clouds formed a '3' shadow atop the buildings. They should've ended it there (or after showing the release date) and made people think/talk about it instead of telling them what it was for.
The only cool part about that commercial was at the end when the clouds formed a '3' shadow atop the buildings.
Really? I'll have to watch it again. I was expecting the shadows or clouds to be the PS3 logo and I still didn't see it.
eltonto was a dupe and has been banned. No need to reply to him.
glad to know CAG has vigilant mods
So did anyone else think of "Independence Day" when watching this commercial?
I thought of this:

Whats with these artsy commericals that have nothing to do with the PS3 at all? Show us what the system can do, not some ...well, I am not sure how to explain that commercial?

Brand advertising. nobody will ask "what's a playstation?" afterwards since everyone owns a PS2, so just showing a commercial that says "PS3" is enough to get people excited.

they don't need to go through and show screenshots and all that. Though a pic of the actual system might have been a nice touch.
Personally, I liked the commercial. It gives you this feeling that something amazing is going to happen soon. It's epic. On the other hand, I agree that it doesn't really "advertise" the product. However, for someone who is anticipating the PS3, it just adds more to the excitement. Of course, you could apply that commercial to any product that people were looking forward to and it would probably have the same effect. Anyway, I like it more than the original PS2 commercials, or the XBOX 360 ones.
qft.

Although I did like the PS2's PS9 commercials. Those were cool.
qft.

Ugh those were the worst commercials of all time for a system launch ever. It's Sony's philosophy boiled into 30 seconds, always waiting for the next big thing.

Sony Marketing team, what you've just shown is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever seen. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having seen it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul. :D

Dude that commercial gave me goose bumps totally fucking awesome advertisement. Ignore the fact that its for PS3 it is just a clever idea of the kids coming out to play and wait and the 3 going over head. fucking bomb diggity.
Kotaku updated their post saying that the commercial is only running in Canada, and not the US.
There would be no point in running comercials here. Everyone who wants one is going to get it.

I for one would much rather see a comercial showing off all the launch titles, rather than some "hip" ipod marketing bullshit.
