Fixing 360 with No Picture?

HarryTruman

CAGiversary!
A few months ago my 360's video card went out. I can get sound but no picture and I had my friend over with his cable and it did the same thing so my cable is ok.

My question is: has anyone successfully fixed this issue? Any advice or online guides I can trust?

Ideally I would just buy a new unit but I was laid off a few weeks ago so that's not going to happen any time soon.

I'd like to just fix it myself (now that I have plenty of time) to save some money.

Thanks!

My roommate took his to "a guy" and this person wasn't able to fix the problem, he should have just paid to send it in. Although it looks like you can just spend a hundred-something dollars to get an arcade at this point.

Your problem is that your Xbox 360's GPU is messed up. This is a less common problem than the RROD and is practically the E74 error except your xbox is still functioning without video. There are several options that await you.

1. Check to see if your Xbox is under warranty

Unfortunately, your xbox will not be covered under the RROD warranty. Therefore, you will most likely have to pay $99 to have it fixed.

A quick and temporary fix for the "no video" error is to use the towel trick (just google it). The towel trick, although meant for the RROD is also beneficial to the "no video" error because it reheats the GPU. Your video will work, but only for a certain amount of time, like a week tops. If you do decide to use the towel trick, you may end up with the E74 error or the RROD in the future.

Or, you can open up your Xbox 360 and clean the GPU, etc... there are a lot of fixes that people have done to fix the "no video" error. Just search the "no video but sound" error on google. A lot of people have ended up using a heatgun to the GPU, or using the x-clamp fix i think.

Thank Chronotrigga for all that info! Unfortunately I've had my 360 for almost 3 years so the only thing the warranty would cover is RROD and E74 I believe.

I might try opening it up and fixing it. Sounds like the towel trick isn't that great of a fix. I don't know, I guess I can't ruin it anymore than it already is.

Guess my best option is to maybe wait until I can buy a new one. :(

... or you could just pay to get it fixed. As stated before my roommate had paid somebody forty dollars to attempt to fix his 360 with the same problem. The first fix didn't work so he ended up cutting part of the motherboard to fix the problem, which also didn't work. Now my roommate has a 360 that he can't even send into Microsoft.

Call customer service and tell them you got the RRoD. They will fix it. I had the same exact thing happen a while back and called and told them it was RRoD and i had a refurb back to me in 2 weeks.

I've also done this before or told others to without incident.
