I hope there's a PS3 sale or price drop soon, mine launch day 60GB just YLOD last night. Considering the amount of hours I've put on that thing I'm surprised it took so long.
When my 60 gb dies Im taking it in for a cleaning/upgrading the hard drive/fixing it. (I will not trade BC for a slimmer model)
Just be careful who you take it too. I took mine into someone who was well trusted. I had tried fixing it before and know my way around a bit when I got it back...not only was it not working and they tried to sell me a working version but, they stole my blu-ray drive. Quite a frustrating experience

I thought about it but with the repair cost ($150 or so from Sony, I wouldn't go third party) with little warranty afterwords and the fact that the console will fail again (design issue) it's just not worth the hassle to me. Plus I do have a PS2 sitting around somewhere so in the rare case I want to play a PS2 game I can. I am going to try fixing it myself first though to buy some time, and if it doesn't work I'm out a little repair time and a tube of thermal paste.

Yep. Not worth the trouble of trying to keep an aging PS3 going if it'll die anyway just because it runs PS2 games, esp since it doesn't run them as well as an actual PS2.

Considering the pros and cons of the newer 160g model vs the 2006 60g (noise, build quality, power consumption, reliability, etc), there's no need for me to keep the old one chugging when I can sell it and still get a decent return even now. This is especially the case when there's minimal benefit to run PS2 titles on a PS3 (res bump, one less box, virtual memory, etc). I mean, I even have a wireless controller for my PS2 and none of my usb arcade sticks will work with PS2 titles on it anyway.

My slim actually died faster than my 60gb which still works. Crappy laser module.

Lucky I was still within warranty which meant the slim died in less than a year, lol!

Did I happen to take mine to the same slimeball as you, or are all these console repair shops equally shady?
My drive was stolen also. I noticed about a week after getting it back that the drive (which worked fine before) couldn't read any disks. I sent it in to repair the overheating, and not only could they not repair it, they made a few bucks reselling my working BR drive. I figured out the drive was swapped when I took the system apart again and saw a beat up drive sitting in my console. I had seen the original drive at least 6 times from all the times I opened it myself, and it sure as hell wasn't the imposter in my machine.

Don't trust this repair shop (same place, two names):

If your BC PS3 is dead/dying, just play Taps for it, then cut your losses and sell it or trade it in. Way less hassle then dealing with any of these rip-off artists.
