Follow That Sign! (What yard sales can do for your videogame collection)

There's also the flipping adventure. Perhaps you're personally not interested in an item but know somewhat it's trade value/rarity/demand/etc..

If you can get it hella cheap through bargaining and flip it on Ebay or what not, you can make some extra money that way. It's what I do sometimes to get extra cash 8)

Not only do I benefit from the "one man's trash is another man's treasure" saying, but I also find it fun o_O
i remember the really old garage sale threads. I think that was what eventually made me join CAG ;]
Same here...but just reading through it almost made my head explode, with these insane deals that I know are impossibly rare, particularly out here.

I remember going to swap meets, flea markets, etc. as a child, and getting loads and loads of old comics and toys for dirt cheap (back in the late late 70's and early 80's), but eBay has definitely killed it. You have to find the sales where the people are clueless about values of items, and that basically means they have to have never gone on the Internet.

Virtually impossible in a city such as mine, Los Angeles, unless you go to the ghetto. But there, beyond the inherent danger, the items are usually not the good stuff and usually in extra bad shape. Also everyone who has anything remotely worthwhile asks WAY too much, even for garbage, and there is WAY too much competition for the stuff.

At least now that I'm 30, I make a very good living so I can afford the trade off of paying the premium prices for in demand/rare items. But what really sucks now? I have no time for my games. My backlog is at least 200 games deep.

My best score BTW was at a flea market, when I was probably around 10 or 11 (1986). This guy's booth had his kid who was selling his comic book collection. None of it was bagged and boarded, but every issue was fine/very fine or better. Like it had been read once or twice then put aside. For a DIME A PIECE, I got Daredevil 150-175 - yes including the first Frank Miller DD (158) and first Elektra (168) - all was very fine, and various Uncanny X-Men from the high 90's through the 140's including a 95, 96, 98-103, 105, and a bunch more I can't remember the exact numbers - some were fine but most were very fine to near mint. No 94 or Giant Size 1, but oh well.

Even 20 years ago, that was a MONSTER score. I just wish he had Amazing Spider-man comics (and other items), and that I had picked up everything he had. I gave him something like 5 bucks and got 50+ comics that today are worth thousands.

Second best score was a pretty big lot of original Star Wars figures and vehicles/playsets for $15. I still have it all boxed up somewhere, but I was always more partial to GI Joe to be honest.

Third best score was probably a tie - a guy selling first wave 80's GI Joe figures for $.50 or a buck a piece, back about a year or two after they had come out...like 83 or so. I'm talking the original Snake Eyes, Scarlet, Stalker, Breaker, Cobra Soldier and Cobra Officer etc. Just a 5 gallon bucket full of them. All stiff arm. I think I got 20 or so of them for $12. No weapons or vehicles, but I already had most of the figures myself. I still have them all boxed up. The tie was another couple selling a butt load of GI Joe vehicles from the first few waves. Score something like 3 HISS tanks, a Mobat, 2 FANGs, an AweStriker, the helicopter, 2 Rattlers, and a bunch of smaller ones like the first Jeep for $25.

I've had a few game scores, but nothing that really sticks out. Probably a Chrono Trigger complete SNES for 5 bucks about 8 years ago or so.

Oh yeah one other thing that really helped...I was lucky enough to have my dad work on tons of commercials through the production company he was the head special effects man and also propmaster for.

The company's clients included Mattel and Hasbro, thus one night my dad brought home every original release of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, about 3 months before they came out in stores. I don't even know if these are prototypes, but they look exactly like the same figures that came out in stores. This included the Battle Cat, 2 of the missle firing bat-a-rams, and Castle Greyskull. About 10 figures including a couple He-man, Skeletor, Man At Arms, Teela, a bunch more.

I still have them boxed up as well (no where near complete...I played these into the ground), but whoever put the stickers on Castle Greyskull was crappy at placement. And none of it came with boxes, but I do have a bunch of the mini comic books that came with them. He also at various times brought home tons of Hot Wheels and playsets, Barbie stuff for my sister, and a few times, a few bunches of GI Joe, Transformers, Battlebeasts etc. Still have most of it except for the Battlebeasts, along with my own store bought GI Joes and Transformers.

Probably one of the most valuable items he brought home once was a set of McDonalds Peanuts glasses - unlike the ones in the store, however, these beauties were hand painted by Charles Schultz. They have partial scenes on the glass because in the commercial, some of the characters came to life from off of the glass, onto the film. None of these were supposed to ever be released (Mr. Schultz's representatives had specifically informed everyone when they delivered the glasses that they were supposed to all go back directly with them after the shooting was completed.

Well, my dad, being the sneaky guy he was, and seeing as he was in charge of all the items for the commercials, took some of the regular McDonalds glasses that were all over the place and being used as well, and switched them out with 2 complete sets of the handpainted ones. Then he dropped the box of "handpainted" ones, resulting in their breaking. So the representatives had to take back a box of broken "handpainted" ones that were really just the regular old McDonald's ones. Oops. I wonder how much the glasses are worth, but I think they will stay in my family for a few years more.
A few years ago I snagged a complete set of Nintendo Power from the first issue to 1993 for $10. That added to my collection of 1992-2003. I hope to find some good stuff this summer.
Shoot...I still have a ton of those as well. I think I need to really get my list updated, including tons of extra comics and old gaming mags like Nintendo Power (and the pre-Nintendo Power ones...don't remember what it was called) and EGM. I think I have most of the first issues.

Best score recently was here on CAG

Traded a Mother 3 for Marvel Vs Capcom 2, Street Fighter III:Double Impact, Grandia II - All for the Dreamcast, and Advance Wars DS. Funny thing was he wouldn't let go of his Crazy Taxi b/c he valued it to much but gave me those three games instead.
Plus, the whole "call ahead and see what they have" completely takes the fun out of the hunt.
For me, I'm up in the air about calling ahead. I don't know if the person on the phone is lying to me about what they have.

I've called many a holder of garage sales and was told every time "Sorry, we don't have this. What are you looking for? Have you thought about EB Games?" Those people are usually idiots and will give EB their copies of Metal Saga or something.

I find talking to co-workers/friends to actually be helpful. One of my co-workers is actually thinking about selling me her Nintendo 64 and games.

Yard sale this weekend, grabbed:

N64 /w both zelda games: 15 bucks
Goodwill: Dragon Warrior II, Legend of Zelda (Gold), Battletoads, Megaman 2
Total: 25

Awesome article. I once bought an NES with Dr. Mario and River City Ransom for only $5. Same person sold me my beloved keyboard for another $5.

I would also suggest going to flea markets if you have any nearby. They can also have good deals, but you might have to dig around a bit there to find them.

I was so thrilled for my findings over today and yesterday i decided to make a quick post!

Don't underestimate the stupidity of people, I have had people who know the ebay value of their stuff toss me NES games for very cheap, there was a guy last year that was selling off most of his older video game collection, games were priced around 1.50 or 1$ each and there were many gems, plus I got a couple free games cause I bought a lot of stuff, said he knew about rarity and ebay but just didn't care, some people do not care or have time to hock their stuff on ebay, some people need cash quick. If a person doesn't value stuff personally then they will sell it.

I seem to ALWAYS run into the kid who is selling off his older games for pennies or a few dollars just to get a few dollars for the latest stuff, god I love these kids, they have provided me with nearly my entire games collection! Most often they don't know the value of an item since it was a "gift" or a parent bought it for them.

For the people who are overpriced I just laugh at them because then they just have to haul their stuff back in the house and keep it when they really intended to sell it, and most of the time its just stuff they don't want at all.

My theory is that if your gonna have a yard sale you have to be willing to basically give your stuff away, or else don't bother, this could work to your advantage if you have a lot of ebay-worthless items that you just want to get rid of. But you would have to have a lot of stuff and willing to put price tags on it and haul it out for sale. Its that way at least for this area, even if your items are in the 10$ range thats too much for a yard sale, people come with pocket change and they are usually not willing to spend more than a few dollars per house. The items that are priced at 1$ or less is most appropriate for this area. I always see the higher priced items left even if they are in reality very good deals just because people don't come to yard sales with a lot of money here. The houses that price correctly and negotiate with friendly people selling the stuff are the ones that move the most stuff and profit the best off yard sales. Its all in what you can move at a yard sale, the more junk you can move the more you will make. If your not willing to negotiate and price your stuff high then don't even bother.
