My fiance is not as smooth, and we were on time constraints, and we both knew it was coming, so it's not one of those 'awwww how sweet' moments or anything, but something he said afterwards still makes me melt because as goofy as the proposal was, I knew it was heartfelt.
Short backstory: He and I have been in a long distance relationship since June 2002. He lives in London, England, I live in Ohio. We knew after a year or two that we were going to go the distance and researched the options and the only one that fit us was him coming here on a fiance visa, which means we have to be engaged before he comes here and marry within 90 days of him entering the states. So we weren't expecting to do the 'suprise, here's a ring I got you' thing.
He was here for the summer in 2004, and we put ring shopping off till last minute, not remembering it takes time to resize. We bought a cheap ring set ($400ish, nothing fancy, which is fine by me, I'd rather spend my money on video games than expensive jewelry.), but found out that we wouldn't have it back in time for him to propose to me before he went home. So, we got home, and I found the set my father (now deceased) gave my mother when he proposed, and gave it to Adam if he still wanted to propose at some point.
He was antsy the next few days, and I didn't know why. I figured he was just getting nervous about going home. After a few days, I started to think he wasn't going to do anything at all-- he is the hopelessly bashful type who has tons of great ideas but never thinks they're good enough, so never follows through.
So one afternoon I decide to go make lunch for us, and walk in the kitchen. He comes out too. He hugs me from behind, and I feel a sharp pain on my shoulder. I go 'Ow! What the hell?' and proceeded to tell him that he scratched me. Then I saw he had the ring in his hand and shut up, and he asked me to marry him. In my kitchen. I laughed and said yes, feeling stupid for yelling at him, him feeling stupid for injuring me while proposing.
Shortly after he explained to me that he knew that wasn't romantic, and he was sorry, but he just 'Couldn't wait to ask me to be his wife'. He'd wanted to several times since I gave him the ring-- He had it in bed with us once but couldn't find the right time, he had plans to do it the night before some other way, but things just kept not working out. That's why he'd been antsy the last few days. He just really wanted to ask me. And things were calm for the next day or two before he had to go home.
