Found a discrepancey in my credit report...

Allnatural

CAGiversary!
So I checked my credit report for the first time (Experian) and I found an account I had no knowledge of; an open credit card through HSBC bank. I immediately suspected that it was one of my father's cards. I'm a junior, so it's not unusual for us to get mixed up in the paperwork. I called HSBC and found out that the card is his (his name and address anyway) but it's registered to my SSN.

This has suddenly become a touchy subject, so I haven't confronted my father about it yet. On the surface it would seem that he used my SSN to get a CC, but when he applied (05/1996) I had virtually no credit, only a Sears card. Now, I've heard that banks will give cards to just about anyone, so maybe my lack of credit was better than his bad credit (he has filed for bankrupcy in the past, but I don't remember when). I feel like shit for thinking this, so I'm trying to convince myself that it's a bank snafu. I have personally done business with HSBC in the past. My old Best Buy card, which I received 07/1996, was backed by them. Is it possible that the bank mixed up our SSN's?

I've filed a dispute with Experian, but it'll be some time before they get back to me. Thankfully the account's in good standing, so it's had little appreciable impact on my credit score.

Just stick through on contacting Experian to get it straightened out. It might not hurt to call HSBC as well. I've found that credit card companies aren't too bad to deal with (except for when they try and up your interest rate with a fine print mention in those stupid monthly flyers).

By chance, is the account in good standing?
