well, you just quit the renewal option in xbox.com before your free month ends
 
If you can find that option online, then post it around. The only way anyone here knows of to cancel your auto-renewal is to call them.

Also, you have to sign up for a new account for this to work. It will not work on any other accounts except those newly created.

I was able to follow the link and get the free month and I've had my live account for years now. I am on a month month account that expires tomorrow. But I've had gold for years before that.
