Lowe's.com It says they're giving away a million trees, but I don't know if that means there's a certain allocation per store, or exactly how it's going to work, so I guess getting there early would be good. If there's a Lowe's employee around here that can clarify this, that would be cool. Otherwise give it a shot. I hope it's a hearty tree, we have one that needs replacing and since it gets super hot around here in the summer one that provides shade would be great. Not a weird pine or something. Anyway, just thought I'd share. Hopefully my fellow cheapass homeowners find use in this.

Pertinent info:

**Tree type will apparently be Blue Pine, not sure if this will be regional or not.
**First 100 people get the tree, so get there early. Check your local stores hours via the link above.

The last free tree I got was from Nintendo, but I was too little to grow it properly. Maybe it'll come out better this time.

Man Lowes, Earth Day is April 22! Do not take away the only claim to fame for my birthday!

I will definitely pick one up, and thanks for the post OP!

At least yours isn't on tax day! And thanks for the heads up op, I'm gonna call my local Lowes to make sure they are doing this.

I could use a new tree. The lawn mower that I think our HOA hired just mowed down a tree sapling that was growing on the sidewalk buffer. They conveniently never mowed the sidewalk buffer until today... Poor tree.

It's also the day Deepwater Horizon sunk and started the oil spill. How's that for some Earth Day yin and yang?

I think I will swing on over to Lowe's on the way home and ask. We definitely need a tree. I will probably also put out some feelers as to whether or not my wife would be able to swing on in right after me and pick up another. Always good to plant two instead of one. Evens out the yard. lol.

:0 How horrible. Try flanking the next one with wooden rods to make it clear that it's not to be mowed.

I'm sure these will be very young, small trees if they are free, which isn't a problem, I just hope they are shade trees like oak or pecan trees and not something obsure like an oleander or some random shrub.

This. Can't really see Lowes giving out large half grown trees. Will definitley have to go to my local Lowes and grab one. Thanks OP.

Based on the ad, it might end up being a pine. But it could very well be the little citrus trees that they usually have for a couple of dollars.

My cousin works for Lowes, I'll text him tonight and try to have some "inside" in for you tomorrow morning about these free trees. My guess is, we probably won't live long enough to see them get big haha

A pine would probably be acceptable for the weather conditions of most regions as they are fairly hardy during a freeze and don't require alot of specialized care. Not sure what kind of Citrus trees Lowe's had for 2 dollars, but I can't see them giving away citrus trees to people in the Northern states and expecting them to live through a harsh winter.

I wouldn't expect that either; was just throwing it out there because they're usually trying to get rid of these things. I can't remember what kinds they are exactly, but I know one of them is mexican lime. The others are orange and lemon of some type. Tiny little things...we bought a few of them a while back and they still haven't grown.

Interesting...Citrus do fairly well out here in South Texas. I have a 3 year old lemon tree that already yields decent sized fruit. So they can bring on the citrus here if they want, I'll give it a shot. I jut hope they give people living in Minnesota something more suitable. Where do you live? Any idea why they won't grow?

I live in California, so I can't imagine why they're not growing. We've got nothing but orange orchards everywhere around here, so I know citrus does well. Our other trees are doing quite well and we have more than enough space; these suckers just don't want to grow. At least they're not dead, though.

What? You don't think a citrus tree could make it in MN? I mean, it hasn't snowed since... yesterday!

Well, just called my local Lowe's and they told me they were giving away Blue Pine Trees. If you clicked on the link that Redeema provided, you can actually see the size of them.

They're tine pine trees, so if you want 'em they're first come, first serve.

First 100? Weak! I guess a pine would be ok, but that doesn't provide the shade my house needs when it hits 105 in a couple of months. Then again, any shade is better than no shade, I suppose, which is what that corner of my lot has right now.

By the way, thanks to everyone else who dug up information on this. I'll add it into the OP.

In fairness, the explosion on 4/20 is the starting point, but it did sink on 4/22.

Thanks OP, might grab this.

lol...nice place to visit, but I could never survive a winter up there.

It gets about 115 during the summer here and having a pine tree actually helps quite a bit. Of course, it will be a few summers before it's big enough to shade your house. Heh.

I'm also in the Central Valley...

Went to my Lowe's at 8am (they opened at 6) and thought for sure they'd be out, but they weren't even close. They had at least two thirds of their box full with trees. They were even making announcements overhead in the store so that people would pick them up. We went inside bought a couple cheap plastic pots and some soil, and ended up with two 'free' trees that cost $17.

The chick in the store said that these will not grow to their full height within our life times. I didn't tell her that I was going to live forever, I didn't want to get into it right then and there. She said it would grow to be about 60 feet, though. I don't know if I need a tree that damn tall in my front yard. I'll have to research this some more and decide.

So I went inside Lowe's and I thought for sure, they would be atleast small trees....

They were basically roots in a little bag.......didnt take a pick inside the bag so i just left.
