free wifi router-DEAD....its been a good run

Got mine, works great when directly linked to my cable modem. Puts out two signals, a secure password only wifi sig and a unsecure public wifi sig. From what I understand you have to sign up with Fon to use the public signal, but I live in the country where no one is in range of the public signal anyway. Great find lets me connect my Wii and PC to the private signal at the same time (haven't tested max connections). I didn't have to sign on anything past what I did to order the equipment either.

Judging from an earlier post, it appears that I'll never be charged for the wifi router, but when someone signs up for the public sig they have to pay a few bucks a day to use it so thats how FON makes a return.

Also it appears that even though the free 10,000 are gone, current members of FON can invite friends to the FON network and FON will send them a free Wifi router. Not quite sure where they expect to make a profit out of this though... =P

lol yea its true but now it would be exelent if some company were giving away a few laptops that would be awsome someone go out looking for this plz lol.
WOW my friend accidently ordered 2 and got them, maybe its full of anthrax.......
HAHAH yeah probublys xD

I think Fonero has funding from partnered ISPs and the wifi routers are probably dirt cheap to produce so they don't care about distribution as long as they have the possiblity of 1. getting people to pay the 3 dollar day pass and 2. getting people to subscribe to their partner broadband ISPs.

Can you get this thing to work on the DS?

The public one doesn't work and the security is not supported on the DS....

Help me please:cry:

Are you sure its not supported for the DS? Try entering the number as the WEP key on network settings (if the DS has network settings, I'm not sure I don't own one =( ).

If that doesn't work I don't think you'll be able to use the DS on it as you need to visit a website to login user/pass for the public.

I know you mean well, but a crapload of routers hate a LOT of non-computer WiFi devices, regardless of what encryption methods that are supported.

The router is just fine, the problem is because for the private signal you need to enter the key and for the public signal you need to log into Fonero website with an account and password. I'm guessing the DS doesn't have a network setting that allows you to enter an access key.

If it were just an open signal I'm pretty certain you would be able to use it for the DS.

very odd...but a FedEx truck delivered mine last nite at around 8 PM?! o_O never heard of ANY mail being delivered at that time! WOAHHHH radical dude...

The deal is dead now. Still haven't got it.
It would be really nice if a FON member could send me an invite so I can get in on the deal (as mentioned above by Rouzuki.) soonerbh (at) gmail
ok since this deal is dead we can give out free invites to other people so they can get their free routers too.........so if anyone is a fon member....please give invites for people to get routers for free...thanks

OP

I guess I could invite a few people. But I ain't gonna invite people who made an account just to get a free WiFi router.

Please edit your posts if your request an router invite and recieve one, that way people know whom to invite and who has already been invited. Danke =D

Connect your wifi router directly to your cable/dsl modem, connect your wii via the my_place access point. When you connect it'll ask you for the serial key on the bottom of your router, input and wii-on!

Btw, apparently the link that gets sent to the people I invite to get a free fonero router doesn't work. Is any one else seeing that problem for invites from others?

Got my Fonera today. The only wireless device I have, other than my work laptop which is at work, is my Wii. Has anyone successfully set it up using only the Wii? I can see the private network but it won't transfer any data.
Once I get it working I'll certainly share some invites if I have them.

I've got the Fonera hooked into the 'uplink' port of my wired router, which is in turn connected to the cable modem. Does the uplink work for that, or do I need to use one of the other ports, or will this not work like this?
