Comcast's G4, a cable network aimed at young men, has hired Howard Stern's longtime girlfriend, actress Beth Ostrosky, to host irreverent countdown series "Filter" and recruited Fox Sports correspondent Olivia Munn to co-host pop culture news show "Attack of the Show."Hires are part of the channel's evolution away from videogames into broader-based fare for guys.
G4 president Neal Tiles also has named Laurie Finn to head up talent, which Tiles said will become increasingly important to the network.
"As we move forward, part of our appeal to young guys will be our live-event programming, in addition to our studio-based shows," Tiles said. "Laurie will help bring us big names as we establish ourselves in the space" through coverage of events like E3 and Comic-Con.
Tiles previously worked with Finn when he was exec VP of marketing at DirecTV and Finn produced a news show for the satcaster.
One of Finn's priorities will be to scout people to profile when "Icons" relaunches this summer. The "Biography"-style skein has been revamped to focus on figures that appeal to young men, including J.J. Abrams and Bryan Singer. She'll also continue to strengthen the lineup of guests visiting G4's live, studio-based series.
In addition, both "Filter" and "Attack of the Show" will be relaunched in June with a scaled-back focus on technology. Heavier emphasis will be on attitude, humor and a broader range of male-oriented topics.
Finn will report to senior VP of production John Reiber, who was brought in earlier this year to run programming under Tiles (Daily Variety, Jan. 19).

lol

That's exactly what the shows need, more attitude. I think I speak for all males when I say that we only want to watch TV with attitude. TV executives have their fingers on the pulse of us all and that pulse is screaming out in rhythmic time, "Attitude... attitude... attitude...".

(And yes, I moved this topic into the "General Gaming & Industry News" forum as ironic as that is.)

I didn't really understand what The Man Show had to do with video games...

G4 will now be another cable network I won't mind missing. If I still had cable.

Olivia Munn has actually been on Attack of the show for little bit now. Personally, I think she's a little better than Sarah Lane was.
No relaunch of Judgement Day. How sad.
I'll never forget one of their Best of episodes where it showed a segment where Tommy Tallarico got sooo mad about a game that he actually stormed off, got in his car, and left. They were on location somewhere and you can actually hear him start up the car and drive away, it was fucking hilarious.

I totally agree. I thought Sarah was pretty funny and good on the show, but Olivia has been quite a bit better, IMO. And she's a helluva lot prettier.

Sarah Lane has a bad bout of Monkey Face.

I saw Attack of the Show yesterday and they said that there wouldn't be a new episode until after E3, and that they would have a whole new set and "more attitude" (or something to that effect). I didn't understand the need for the changes, but the quote posted by the OP now puts it under context: G4 officially wants to fuck every last one of its remaining loyal viewers right in the ass - They want to disavow everything that made the channel particular and they apparently want to completely change their audience.

I've been holding back on this for a while. I've been patient. I had some faith you could put it back together. I thought maybe our group intervention would work, but it looks like you're a lost cause.

Sorry I have to say this, but:

fuck you G4 (after E3, that is :D)

G4, does anyone really watch that anymore? The Devry and informercials/commercials is what killed it for me, and the programming, and the killing of techtv, etc. etc. etc. etc.

The other thing with Sarah is that she was horribly obvious when she was reading the cue cards. That gets incredibly annoying.

Funny thing is, I watch G4 now more then ever and only for ST:TNG

At least they are putting chicks up there - I will never understand why they advertise the hell out of Kevin Pereria - hello, 13 year old chicks are not playing Quake till 3AM and buying Hellboy figurines.
So they're attempting to become Spike TV? Nothing like two identical shitty channels to gain viewership.
fix'd
http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117941685?cs=1&s=h&p=0
Scaled back focus on Technology? ROFL, they barely talk about technology to begin with. I also have to say that Olivia Munn sucks ass, she's horrible. The only thing I watch anymore is X-Play. As other have stated, this is a complete rip of Spike TV, and Spike TV sucks. But at least Spike TV came up with the idea 1st. G4 doesn't stand a chance when it is channel 150+

So, they are re-launching Icons, the best show on the network, but are now going to do shows on young male "icons" like J.J. Abrams? I am a 21 year old male, the type of person they are coveting the most, and I don't know who the fuck J.J. Abrams or Bryan Singer are.

And the only people you have to blame for the decline of G4 is yourselves. If more gamers would have watched it when it was actually gaming and technology based, they wouldn't be turning it into Spike Jr.

HA!!! G4 has sucked since the moment the day it started. It has always been about stupid pretty people that don't know crap about tech or games. Now they are just dropping the pretense. If it had ever been worth watching we'd have been there.
And the only people you have to blame for the decline of G4 is yourselves. If more gamers would have watched it when it was actually gaming and technology based, they wouldn't be turning it into Spike Jr.
It's tough to argue with that. But I actually quit Directv and got cable for the sole purpose of having G4tv when it launched. I did my part.
Sounds like instead of G4, they should call themselves Maxim
Nah, if it was Maxim, it'd be a lot better... IMO, they're becoming more like the crap that comes out of my ass than a TV channel. Next thing you know, they'll have American Gladiators on there.

I fucking hate X Play, and don't understand why it is liked by so many people. Both Adam and Morgan are annoying and their transitions into commercials and the answers that they give to letters at the end of the show make no sense.

I wish the staff of GameSpot could take over the X Play role on G4. There On The Spot show is fantastic (except for occasional technical problems at the beginning of the shows) and everybody on there is likeable. Plus, there reviews actually mean something. I know that they had some GameSpot guys on one of their shows for a few episodes and I really enjoyed it.

Weird, they want less focus and more generic content. I really don't see this working, but I guess time will tell.

And did somebody say they are going to get American Gladiators! Hot damn!

This keeps getting worse and worse. First they switched from Techtv to G4tv, which wasn't that bad but it wasn't a good start. Now they are removing everything that Techtv stood for and replaced it with reruns of Fastlane and The Man Show. Now they are supposedly reinventing AOTS with more attitude or some crap with half of the hosts gone. This is pretty much the formula for suck.
Sarah Lane left.

That killed it for me.
huh?

you have a think for monkey face?

btw, here is her pic for anyone who hasn't seen the show

monkey_girl_tn.jpg

I remember Leo Laport(or however you spell it). Did he leave before the G4 merger? Cause that made me stop watching TechTV for a while.

I'll watch whatever gaming relates programming, if any, that they still air, but man has the channel gone downhill.

I dont agree with those who say it always sucked, but it def sucks now.

That is the worst.

Is that chickthat did Cheat gone? Kristin Holt or whatever. Just saw one of those G-Spot shorts and it was hosted by Morgan Webb. Was for Halo 2.

The fact that I write web reviews for them notwithstanding, I like X-Play. Always have. Adam and Morgan are a good balance of credibility and humor. They do a good job, in my opinion, and are both actual gamers.

On the other hand, GameSpot should be nowhere near network TV. The few times they've been on G4 have been trainwrecks. Unattractive, uncharismatic train wrecks. I know and like a few of their guys, but they do NOT belong on TV.

I would argue that this point also applies to several of the "personalities" that have been or still are on the network.

AOTS keeps trotting out that Will fellow (I can't recall his last name), who is utterly incapable of lending a sense of interpretation or ownership to the words he's reading from the TelePrompTer; I can't believe he's not been coached on how to properly (at least TRY to) adopt a naturally modulated tone to his voice when reading so it sounds more natural, rather than a stilted mess.

G4's past roster drips with these types of non-personalities, too: anyone remember Ronilyn Reilly? Or that bag of douche, Bill Sindelaar?

It's tough to be nostalgic and marvel about how great G4 used to be "before the fall"... after all, they did make a running feature of two idiots teaching gamers how to make a grilled cheese sandwich during commercial breaks. In short, bemoaning how far this network has "fallen" is like grousing about how wet water's become lately.

I'm glad someone feels the same way. It's juvenile, annoying and their reviews/previews seem more focused on desperately trying to be funny or clever (which, I'm sure they are if you're about 13 years old) than actually reviewing the game. I can't even count how many times Ive heard the same lame drug jokes over and over again. That is, when they're not ranting about something Schwarzenegger has done. I guess they forgot that some people actually live outside California...and do not care.

X-play has its faults but is the only thing left on that channel worth a damn. Once it is gone they can stack the chairs on the tables and put out the lights because everyone will have moved on.

I knew things were getting critically bad when they starting having car shows that catered solely to a group of annoying people I'd just as soon kill as look at. Picking up a long, long syndicated old SF show that ended production almost fifteen years and acting like this was some great service is just baffling. Are they now catering to children who weren't yet born when those Trek episodes were already played to death? And what do they do for an encore? They dig farther into the vaults for a FORTY YEAR OLD show that was in syndication when my family still had a B & W TV and the Atari VCS was still several years off.

Guys, there is this outfit called the SciFi Channel. They prety much have that category covered. And even the Skiffy Channel manages a fair amount of good original programming. Why don't you guys learn from your own example and expand on things like Anime Unleashed that doesn't have competition from every hole in the wall UHF station in the world. Show us some programming we cannot get elsewhere because it's new to the US broadcast market and not because most channel won't bother with a show that was canceled without even a full season. I'm looking at you, Fastlane. The Jaime Pressly episode's high point can be downloaded from numerous sites. OTherwise the series is a loss. Leave it buried.

I agree that Anime Unleashed needs to come back and Man Show and Star Trek need to go. Prime time is filled with nothing but crappy reruns of these shows. I wonder if ratings are higher now. If that's the case, it's our fault for not watching enough.

i just dont know how those ratings can be higher than they were with AU. That used to be the only reason I even watched G4 after the merger. Now I dont even bother. The Man Show, wtf does that have to do with gaming in teh first place? Star Trek (I can atleast understand the geekness of this show but WTF?!). Pretty soon they will be bringing in the Price is Right and Howard Stern re runs from 10 years ago.

As with others, the only reason I watch is for X-Play. If they want to air shows like Fastlane, fine, but do it ONLY after 1am when the other infomercials are on. One show that pisses me of the most is Street Fury. That guy is aggrivating as all hell. What really cemented it to me was the SEMA episode. He saw some multicolored spinner rims and nearly shit and creamed his pants at the same time. I like fastcars as much as the new adrenaline junkie, but theres more to cars than dumbass wanna be gangsta thugs and fucking big breasted bimbos that don't know a gear shift from a door knob

At this point, just give me the free video podcast of x-play and take this steaming pile of crap channel of my channel line up.

cristian holt should have a late night type of show on there xplay should be an hour show most importantly...they need more programing after the merge how can they still be running just as many reruns as they did when it was just g4 by itself?????

U wanna know what would save g4 honestly..is if the retard who owns it whos done such a bad job throwing his money away would sell it to someone who knows what to do with it.

Wow...that post was awesome....

Xplay and AOTS should be merged into the same show. A daily news show about Tech and Gaming would be great, and they can do all the game/gear reviews in one show. Also, if they want gaming to be taken seriously as a media/art form, they should treat it as such and stop trying to be so freaking funny with every review. And Kevin Perriera(sp?, and I refuse to google him) needs to stop being funny all together. He knows his shit, but stop with the jokes every two seconds. I stopped Tivo-ing everything on G4 after G4TV was cancelled. That was the only show that gave me intelligent reviews and debate about the gaming industry.

I don't think this would work. I'm pretty sure it's not possible for Kevin Pereira to keep his mouth shut long enough for the reviews to be shown.
