I have to admit that for long gaming sessions, the original gba is more comfortable to use. My hands cramp up using the gba sp for too long. However, I must agree that the sp is far more portable because it folds up. I can just stick in my jacket pocket without worrying about scratching up the screen. It is because of that, the built in light, and the rechargable battery, that I never use my old gba. The dumbest move nintendo made with the sp is not including a dedicated headphone jack!
Well Nintendo addressed one of your two concerns a long time ago. You can buy an official screen protector for your original GBA directly from nintendo.com. I would link to it directly but they do some weird URL redirection that I don't know how to get around. All you need to do is go to their website and access their online store. From there, access the game boy parts section and you will find the screen cover I am talking about. It's only three dollars.
I first received one of these as a give away from nintendo a couple years ago at E3. It's the most practical add on I've seen in years. I was pissed when my GF broke it and wen't without one for nearly a year. It didn't dawn on me that nintendo could possibly sell them! I stumbled across them when I registered for my free zelda collection. I also ordered a replacement screen since the original had a years worth of scratches.
