On my 36" SDTV it looks jaggy as hell, haven't tried on the plasma yet but I'm intrigued.
 
Don't know if I'll ever use it, but for less than $10 after edge + 10% I can't say no. I spend that much for lunch some days. Thanks, OP.

It plays GB/GBC/GBA games via the Gamecube. It plugs in the bottom and uses a disc to play the games.

I'll probably just hook it up to my 20" SD tv once I grab a GC off Craigslist for cheap.
 
I don't really see the point in playing handheld games on a console personally so I'll pass. But thanks for letting me not what it does, still seems interesting but not worth it IMO.
 
At 10 bucks before edge and eternal coupon, its basically a must buy if you have a gamecube. In for one. :) Minish Cap will be mine!!!
 
With a Hori Digital Controller, HDTV, and Component Cables... playing with the Game Boy Player would be like playing with a 2nd Gen. SNES (without the superior sound, of course). ;)
 
It looks good on an HDTV if you've got component cables (and a NGC that can use them.) It supports progressive scan video. Of course the games themselves are low rez, but they look pretty good anyway. I like having the option to play on a big screen. It's worth it. Only problem is the crappy d-pad on Nintendo's gamecube controllers. I'd like to find a wireless 3rd party controller that has a better d-pad. Any suggestions?
 
These things used to be pretty rare and easily sold for $50 used back in the day. Now I see at least a couple at every gamestop. Seems like when the wii came out everybody traded in their gamecube and accessories. Nevertheless, it's quite useful when you don't feel like staring at a small screen or for some of you guys who don't like playing handhelds because of your giant man-hands.

Its basically a Super Gameboy for the Gamecube, but it doesnt look like crap when it converts to the TV. Well relatively speaking.

Its basically like playing Super NES in my opinion. Some quality RPGs on GBA, maybe not as impressive as DS but plenty of GBA games worth playing.

Yeah, it's weird how they disappeared for a while, and then when the Wii came out they got dropped like a hot potato.

LMFAO, agreed :lol: Amazing how the going price for this thing has bottomed out. $50 was indeed the going rate at one time. I'd jump all over this if I didn't already have one. I have a platinum colored GC with matching GBA Player and Component Cables. Screw the Wii, lol.

What's best is to get two (or three, or four) Game Cubes and Game Boy Players, then hook 'em all together for Four Swords, Mario Kart Super Circuit or Mario Bros. Also, it's fun to hook the four of 'em to another Game Cube or Wii for Four Swords Adventures or Crystal Chronicles.
 
A little off topic, but how easy is it to obtain component cables for the GC, and would they be compatible with my launch gamecube?
 
The component cables for the GC are still a little hard to come by. Well, they may not really be hard to find, but they still require a fairly high price. It is easy to find out if your GC can use them. Just take a look at the back of your GC where the cable receptor is located. If you have 2 slots then you can use component cables, if you only have one slot then you can only use composite cables. If you have a "launch" GC then most likely you can use Component Cables.

Yes they should work. Are they easy to find? Short answer - Yes. Just depends on how much you want to pay for them.

They can usually be found fairly easy on eBay for $50-ish.

Use their online store to locate the item - try friends and family's ZIP codes as well. Be warned though, just because a store has a set of cables in the system as the GCN Component Cables, it doesn't mean it's what they have in stock. Don't call a head to verify though, as some employees might snatch 'em up to sell on eBay if you let them know they've got 'em.
 
Component GC cables are very hard to find, cheap at GS (five bucks or so I think), but they sell for 50ish on ebay so alot of times workers grab them and sell them. I got lucky that the ones I found were mismarked as a power adapter and in a nondescript bag hanging on the accessories rack. Also, check the back for two video outs, I think they're marked analog and digital, but I think a launch model should have digital video out as it was a feature that was later cut rather than added later in the GC lifecycle.

The rumor on gameboy player proliferation was that some smaller company that GS bought out had a ton of these for some odd reason having more hit the market devalued it. That's what was discussed here when it first got cheap ($30 at GS).

I remember passing on it new at a Target clearance price of 30ish five years back cause I figured I'd find it cheap on ebay or something. I got around to checking ebay about a week later and crapped myself when brand new ones were selling for 120. Of course when I went back to target it was gone.

The GBA games I've tried on my plasma and my lcd through component cables look good. Blackthorne, Double Dragon, Minish Cap all look good, but you have to know what to expect. I kinda felt like I was playing DD in the arcade again on a big screen, but not old gen graphics feel.

I might look into picking some of these up. Finding GameCubes + Component Cables would be the difficult part of this plan.

This. It took me a couple tries to find cables because several stores had other cables mismarked as component. Frustrating especially when the guy working there claims Nintendo never sold GC component cables. :roll:

I remember that because I always wanted one of these. Recently picked it up for cheap and FF6 looks great on the sdtv. Matches my black GC, I forgot they made gameboy player in platinum too. Think I have GC Component cables but don't know what the hell I did with them since my tv has only 1 component input.

If SNES games are worth playing on a big screen, GBA games are.

I've been looking for gamecube component cables at every gamestop i visit, for well over 5 years, with no luck. I'm really surprised they still fetch so much on ebay, considering how the wii plays gamecube games and pretty much everybody owns a wii at this point. Someday i will find them, someday.....
 
Back on topic, there are also a few GameBoy Player "enhanced" games, such as "Pokémon Pinball Ruby/Sapphire" supporting rumble.

Sometimes stores will send stuff to your local store. Depends on how nice the manager or clerk is at the store with the item you want.

Yup. I've gotten them to do this twice, once sending $5 component cables from a store about 2 hours away to a store only an hour away and once getting them to send a $3 Broadband Adapter from a store about a day's drive away to a store about two hours away. :)
 
It kind of boggles me as to why there aren't 3rd party component cables for GC. Or a way to modify the Wii ones or something. Surprised Intec or MadCatz didn't swoop in to save the day. Maybe I'll email them and be all "HAY GUYZ YOU COULD MAKE $$ DOING THIS" and see if anything comes of it. I'm sure if they knew there was a high demand (or even some demand) they might consider it.

I am far from an expert, but it is my understanding that the GC component cable is more than just wires connecting console to television, but actually contains a proprietary converter to enable progressive scan. I would guess that it wouldn't have been cost effective for a third party to make a version of it, especially for such a niche market (by Nintendo's admission, they removed the digital a/v port because it was used by less than 1% of GC owners, plus GC was the worst selling console of that generation (still probably my favorite, though)).
 
Hey everyone. Just got my Gameboy Player for $7.99 with EDGE and the 10% off eternal coupon. A couple hints for when you go in to get it (YMMV from store to store of course)

*Go to a cashier at the front and ask them for one. My store did not have them out but inside of the case where they hold new games in.
*It will probably still have a sticker saying $14.99 Used, but when scanned it will show $9.99.
*Also, of course make sure that they give you one with the start up disc, however I think they know better. They had 2 Gameboy Players at my store and both had the discs but only one had the official case and one had a sleeve.
*For me I don't have a component cable so I was not able to try the quality on it. But I tried using the S-Video cable and it looked worse than the regular cables. (My Gamecube cables are 3rd party)
*When using Game Boy Color and Game Boy games, they will go in backwards.

Picked one up today when I got Punch-Out. I did not realize that this will also play original gameboy games. It has been a long long time since I have played Link's Awakening.
 
Got GBP today. Extremely dusty & when i shaked it .. kinda weird sound !!! i'll tried it later tonight & hope it work if not i'll get mine money back :)

You probably heard the screws shaking. That's normal. It has screws that go into the bottom of the GCN to help keep it secure.

Heck, I paid twenty bucks for mine last year at GS. That was when I could only find one or two of those in my city - which has around 10 GS locations. Now they are sickeningly plentiful.
 
I wonder how many people traded their GCs in and forgot they even had the Gameboy Player attached to the bottom?

I bought a used N64 from EBgames and it had the 4mb RAM pack still shoved in it, I bet the previous owners forgot about it and whoever traded it in didn't think to look/yank it...
