Game of the Year 2008.

Gears of War 2 for the moment, but still a lot I need to play and won't get to until well into next year. Fallout 2, Fable 2, Dead Space, Left 4 Dead etc.

Based on how much I'm currently loving Oblivion, I'd guess that Fallout 3 has the best chance of dethroning Gears 2.
Cutting through the big budget crap that awed us with *A* epic playthrough once, I'll nominate Burnout Paradise. The game itself was great if you at all appreciate video game driving. The post release support was OUTSTANDING and puts every developer in the business to shame the way they fixed issues, kept current with features (trophies/custom soundtracks/easy MP access) and completely reinvigorated a 7 month old game with the Cagney pack that added Bikes, Day/Night, Challenges, ect FOR FREE. This should be the standard, yet we'll continue to see games hold out new features for 'sequels' time after time. The DLC continues into 2009 by the way.

Go ahead and flame away :D
You make a great points, most games should take some stuff from this and influence their games with it.

I thought my game of the year was going to be MGS4, it has so much good stuff left and right but I was heavily dissapointed by its story.
Ocelot acting like he's partially Liquid, but at the end he isnt at all. Ocelot dying just like Liquid? Cmon thats just cheap. And the last fight is really gay, two old men fighting on top of a ship? It was obvious, I mean so obvious that Naomi was going to betray you. Seriously there is so much more stuff I could point out. And killing off Snake, with his weird disease I definitely give that 3 thumbs down.
I would give MGS4 story like a 2/5 thats how negative I felt about it (and yes I played the game twice).

It tough to choose, since there were really many good games in '08 (not so much in the beginning but many in the end). So here are my top picks, in no particular order:
(1)Deadspace - I'm not the biggest fan of horror games, but this game (and its movie) were amazing. Nice set of items, nice moments that scare you. It wasn't too easy, nor to hard. Trophies were fun, story (IMO) was good. Also, some very nice DLC. This game just leaves me waiting for a 2nd.

(2)Far Cry 2 - I still find this game to be underrated by most of the public. Very fun and long offline mode, with some pretty good AI. Great choice of weapons, very fitting, same with vehicles. Online is fun, especially because of the Map Editor. I just find this to be a game were its easy to find friends, and with a good set of friends everything is more fun :). Before I forget, its one and only DLC is great as well.

(3)MotorStorm Pacific Rift - Impressive racer, was again a little underrated. Great set of vehicles and maps, and the game looks beautiful.

(4)Burnout Paradise - I don't think I really have to say anything about this amazing game, since QiG basically said it all.

(5)LittleBigPlanet - Will go down in gaming history, one of my most anticipated games. Its pretty hardcore for a platformer, but very addicting and fun. I seriously thought splitscreen and platformers would die out, but then showed up LBP and changed my mind :applause:.

(6)Wipeout HD - My favorite PSN game of all year. Graphics and Sound - 10/10. Controlls nice! Levels fun! Im surprised not many people have talked about this, I mean for Christ sakes it lets you play your own music which sometimes echoes through the tunnels! No lie, I would have paid up to $40-50 for this game.

(7)Unreal Tournament 3 - Can't believe this sells for under $20.

Fallout 3 is undoubtedly my Game of the Year for 2008. While it is not without its faults, it is by far and away the most satisfying gaming experience of the year.

Notable honors to Braid (for making the platforming genre relevant in 2008), Left 4 Dead (for its emphasis on fun), Mirror's Edge (for trying; a good first attempt at a first-person shooter innovation), Battlefield: Bad Company (for its well-balanced, underrated online multiplayer), The World Ends with You (for its creativity), Patapon (for being Patapon), Call of Duty: World at War (for sating my Call of Duty cravings), Condemned 2 (for its unique controls and gameplay in a sea of FPSs), and Professor Layton and the Curious Village (for making me feel stupid).

My biggest disappointments of the year were Grand Theft Auto 4 (little innovation, mission structure feels archaic), LittleBigPlanet (while I appreciate the tools, the game is absolutely boring), Gears of War 2 (little innovation, broken online multiplayer), SOCOM: Confrontation (an online-only game that was unplayable for an absurd amount of time), Too Human (little to show for all the hype; hardly competent let alone innovative), and RTSs (some things are best left to PC gaming).

In no particular order, my top 5 of 2008:

- Dead Space
- Mario Kart Wii
- Professor Layton and the Curious Village
- Saint's Row 2
- Left 4 Dead

(Honorable mentions: de Blob, Rock Band 2, Fallout 3, Mega Man 9)

This was an odd year. I went into 2008 with high expectations for a ton of high profile games... and I'm sad to say that when I really thought about it, many of them disappointed me. Fable is, was, and always will be my number one game EVER, so I was insanely excited about Fable 2. I enjoyed it, don't get me wrong, but I didn't LOVE it. The 'Fable problem', for me, is the essence of my issues with the games of 2008... they weren't terrible, but not enough of them delivered fully on their potential. It's why three out of the five I listed were new IPs that surprised the hell out of me this year. More importantly, I chose games that were FUN. Was Mario Kart Wii a great step forward in innovation? Dear god, no... not in the least. What it WAS, however, was a damn good time. It still gets more play than anything else on the Wii.

Ultimately, I'm very sad that my list doesn't consist of the things I was looking forward to... Fable 2, Animal Crossing: City Folk, Silent Hill Homecoming, Grand Theft Auto 4, Gears of War 2, Super Smash Bros. Brawl... it's a sizeable list. As I said, none of them are BAD, they were just *missing* something that captivated me the way the respective series previously had.

My top 5 were games that I just had the most fun with, and the honorable mentions are games that innovated to a point that I couldn't *not* mention them.

I agree. The big-name sequels this year didn't quite deliver as much as they should have, though that's not to say they weren't enjoyable.

MKWii was good now that I think of it. It's by no means perfect(ai issues, balance issues, odd mode tweeks, etc.), but it really delivers on the one important element that most racers these days forget about, FUN.

I feel that there should be a thread marked CAG Community's Personal 2008 Awards with a plethora of categories - not just asking eachothers' Game of the Year... anyways, my GotY.

Battlefield: Bad Company - Just because it's the game I logged the most time on.

In any order..

Left 4 Dead
Crisis Core
Lost Odyssey
Dead Space
Silent Hill Homecoming
Braid

I'm currently enjoying Fallout 3 but just not really into it as I thought I would be.

1. Fallout 3
2. Super Smash Bros. Brawl
3. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
4. Sid Meier's Civilization: Revolution
5. Lost Odyssey

Fallout 3, Geometry Wars 2, Super Turbo HD, Ninja Gaiden 2, Dead Space, Dragon Quest 4, GTA4, and FF7: Crisis Core.

I haven't finished Fallout 3, MGS4 or GoW 2 yet (close with GOW2, not close with the other 2) but my current top 5 is:

5. Mirrors Edge
4. Fable 2
3. Tales Of Vesperia
2. Castle Crashers
1. God Of War: Chains Of Olympus.

I'm not going to have a full list till sometime in Febuary (some big titles need to be completed).
I am honestly surprised at how many people think Dead Space deserves high honors this year.
I'm more surprised by Fallout 3, which I haven't tested out yet. I didn't think it did that well, but this page is telling me otherwise. Would I enjoy it if I kind of like to screw around in Oblivion from time to time?

My main concern is that I'm not going to like the world, Oblivion's world was just so pretty and vast. This one seems dirty and barren(not to say that's not how it's supposed to appear), but is it a lovable dingy place? Also is the shooting actually fun, and do you really get the sense that you're part of the world, affecting it?

Sorry, I'm just a little interested.

There's a ton of locations to visit in Fallout. The shooting in VATS is pretty fun too.

I never played Oblivion and probably never will. I am really not an RPG kinda guy except for a few titles which bridge the RPG/FPS gap (Fallout 3, Mass Effect). I love wandering around the world in Fallout. I feel like I am changing a lot. The DJ on the radio even comments about things I do and it really makes you feel like part of the world.

I gave Fallout 3 a shot with Gamefly and liked it, but after this thread I'm inspired to throw it in my goozex queue. (It'll be a while anyway).

my games of the year are:
1.Banjo kazooie:nuts & bolts--u gotta give this game a chance
2.Gears of War 2:if multiplayer would've worked right away, it'd be #1
3.Fable 2: Just the complete action rpg.

This is especially good to know because I'm pretty anti rpg myself since they're usually a flat out miss with me. Games like Fable 2 seem fun, but also artificial....I guess all RPGs kind of are, the good ones trick you though.

Thanks for the feedback, guys.

How could ANYONE choose Game of the Year unless they have played every game that has come out during the year, or, at the very least, every game on this list?

i haven't, so I'll reserve my vote.
But of the games I've played this year, I enjoyed Fallout 3 most.

They can't. That's why the op (both budget budge attourney at law and leveskesko) said your game of the year and not the game of the year.

I've played every game to an extent even not owning a PS3 and have to say Fallout 3 over MGS, even though they are completely different genres. If I owned the full MGS4 game and had a PS3 I would probably still say Fallout 3 because like Oblivion the game offers endless replay value and just suits me better.

For me it comes down to GRID, GTA IV, and MGS4.

GTA IV was (obviously) an extremely fun game and its atmosphere is excellent. However there is a lot of lack of depth here compared to San Andreas. Rampages are gone, car customization is not here, you can't own/build property, and the Niko Belic story has far too many problems in it to be believable (in terms of actually making sense). Funny thing is, all the above mentioned problems plus other missing items are in previous GTAs. If you can build property in a friggin portable version of GTA, why can't you do it on a home console? Great game, but content was cut (and like a lot of other franchises before it, I blame the focus of multiplayer on the lowered single player value). But unlike other franchises before to sacrifice single player for MP, the MP was a lot of fun for the few times I logged onto it. Doesn't make up for the loss though.

MGS4 - I really enjoyed this game thus far (still have yet to beat it). I havent played the first one in awhile (like since 2001), the 2nd one really got me interested in the series but three was sort of a turnoff. I realize its a stealth action game emphasizing heavily on story, but I felt it was too slow paced. This one keeps the emphasis of story and stealth in tact but ups the action which made me love it. It seems they really focused the player to be more action focused than stealth focused, and its something I've been wanting for years. I never played it online, have no plans to but its one of the very select few (there is maybe 3-4 games out there worth $60) that is worth the full price.

GRID - yes, this is my GOTY. I am a big racing game fan so I am biased towards it. GRID is just all around fun. It takes the depth of DiRT and adds in the fun of PGR (minus the Kudos system). I didn't really enjoy DiRT much, mostly because I am desperately wanting a RalliSport 3. DiRT was true to it's Colin McRae roots on simulation, but I prefer racers to be a mix of sim and arcade which is exactly what GRID is. I didnt have high hopes for this game because of my dislike of DiRT but ever since I played the demo I was hooked. There is a lot of racing here, though tracks do repeat themselves more than I would prefer (but hell if I could handle that in Motorstorm, why not GRID?). There are racing seasons, you can add teammates, and boy is this game tough with assists off and racing on Pro Mode.

A racing game for the GOTY...hell yea.

I haven't played the full version of LBP yet so thats why its not even on my mind. Resistance 2 I havent beaten yet and so far from what I played it was $30 well spent but its nothing to rave about. I have no interest in 60+ person MP, though I do want to do the co-op.

On the 360 side I havent touched any new games since June aside from AC/DC Rock Band and Gears 2. I played Gears 2 with my roomate and it was a lot of fun but it felt no different than the original and was just as short. But Battlefield Bad Company kicked ass when I had it before my system died. I still have yet to be able to play Mass Effect, I acquired it right before my RRoD, and sold it once that occured.

I voted for Fable 2 because that is the only one I had played at the time and it was great. I have now gotten into Fallout 3 and I am switching my vote to that even though Im hardly into it.
Resistance 2.

I play it online everyday.
It's my online GotY for sure. I play it online more than anything. In some ways I could call it my GotY.

I'd probably put Left 4 Dead... maybe Mirrors Edge. But, I put the most time into (and I am now burnt out on it...) Little Big Planet.

I SERIOUSLY started playing it mid September (when the beta started) and have played practically every day for at least 1 hour (some days putting in around 10+ hours) all the way to a few days ago when I finally stopped playing... that game has to win.

Ugh, why's GTA4 keep winning awards... the game is so plain. I have that "sickness" of the game, where when I see images or video of it it gets me kind of queezy... like I am just so sick of seeing the game.

Did anyone else have a horrible time driving in GTA 4? I wasn't quite sure if I was doing something wrong, but I couldn't see s--t when I was turning while driving. I was constantly crashing and I only played about 20 minutes into it.
