Game Recommendations

OK so I just recently bought an Xbox 360 & Kinect, and before this the only recent system I had was a Wii.  So I don't really consider myself a huge "gamer", but I am interested in getting into some more good games. :)

I originally bought the Xbox 360 because I had played Kinect at a friend's house and really wanted to get one so I could do workout games, and just any sort of active game really.  But I looked into some other regular games I thought I might like, and I ended up playing Alan Wake. I'd never played a video game with a real story like that, and I ended up REALLY liking it!  It was the first real game I ever beat, unless you count Rugrats on Playstation 1 as a kid.  lol  I like how with video games these days, it seems a lot more possible to beat them.  I've only had my xbox for a couple weeks and I've already beat Alan Wake, Toy Story 3, and now I'm half way through Bioshock Infinite.

I'm used to games like Super Mario Brothers which are super fast paced & difficult.  Some levels I could play through 15 times and still not beat them!  Now a lot of games seem to be more story-based.  They are more fun and less frustrating!  Don't get me wrong- I still LOVE mario!  But it's a good feeling being able to fully play through a game by myself without a HUGE amount of frustration.

Anyway- I like that Alan Wake and Bioshock Infinite have good stories.  I LOVE that Bioshock Infinite is a bright game that takes place a lot in daylight.  I like the way Alan Wake sort of aims at the "bad guys" automatically once you shine your light towards them.  Toy Story 3 was really cute.  And Skylanders, which I only played cuz it came with my Xbox, has also been a lot of fun even though it's a kids game!

I've also played Blur and Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed at a friend's, and really like those.

I'm interested in finding more games that are more bright and have good stories.  I have a hard time getting into dark & dungeon-y games where you can't see where you're going.  I'm also not to keen on the idea of western themed games.

I'm really into Bioshock Infinite right now.  I like that most of the characters look like somewhat real people, and not like space aliens or something crazy like that.  I also like the "feel" of the weapons, and the fact that I didn't have to spend a super long time figuring out how to play the game.  It was fairly simple.

And although I'm not dead set on games with good graphics, since this is the first time I've had a console with really good graphics I am enjoying the "pretty" games since it's new & exciting to me. :)

Any ideas what other games I might like?

I'm up for suggestions for more "family" games I might like too, and Kinect titles too of course.  :)

Try Far Cry 3 and you'll probably also like the newest Tomb Raider (story isn't very good but it's still a fun game. Personally I liked it more than Bioshock though it isn't a bright and sunny game for the most part like Bioshock).

Maybe Red Dead Redemption also.

There's plenty of cheaper XBLA games that are pretty great also: Dust: An Elysian Tale, Bastion, Castle Crashers (can play 2 player), Trials Evolution

For Kinect the only games I've found fun are Kinect Sports and Dance Central. Both are good family games.

I second the Red Dead Redemption suggestion. Easily one of my favorite games, and hella fun to play online with other people.

Might want to warn that it IS a western RPG. But its a highly good game at that.

I would go cheap classics.

I know you said you didn't like darker games, but Bioshock has a very good twisty plot. But it is set in a dark setting.

Fallout 3. An amazing western RPG (shooter with RPG aspects). Easily one of the top 5 games this console in most people's lists.

Dragon Age Origins. Great single player RPG that plays close to an MMO. Dragon Age 2 is less RPG more hack and slash if that's your thing. Both good games but I prefer origins.

The Elder Scrolls series. Oblivion (4th in series) is very good and Skyrim (5th in series) has one so many titles they should rename some of them to "The Skyrim" trophy. It envelopes you in a single player MMO-esque style. The game is set up to play however you like it. It can be as short as 10-15 hours or as many as 100+ hours if you do all the side stuff

Alan Wake has a side-quel, American nightmare. Its not as good as Alan Wake, but it is still a very solid game.

Halo series single player is one of the best SP First Person Shooters.

Gears of War is a great 3rd person shooter. Probably one of the best 3PS ever gameplay wise. Story is kind of like an Action Movie story. Not major depth but good enough to keep you semi intrigued while you blast through it.

Mass Effect series. Very great series. 1 plays very different than 2&3. But is a great play through. Very story driven with great gameplay. Plus ME3's multiplayer expansions are all free. Also the MP is pretty good.

I know I'm forgetting more. But these are some of the great shouldn't miss titles.

Sadly the Kinect was pretty abandoned as developers didn't want to limit their market to not only Xbox but also to a smaller market that bought the kinect. Some decently good games came out for it, though nothing spectacular. Below are some Kinect games that I would at least demo in the marketplace:

Gunstringer- made by twisted pixel, a GREAT gaming company. Its as simple as acting like you're playing cowboys and Indians. One hand controls a marionette puppet (move left/right, jump) while the other you act like your shooting a gun. Simple yet a fun game with a funny plot/telling of plot.

Child of Eden- not everyone's cup of tea so try a demo of it first. But its fun. Hard to explain gameplay.

Dance Central- the one and only game that you at least have to try, especially with friends over. They did an awesome job on this game. Quite simply its dancing.

Kinectimals- great for kids, redundant for adults. My daughter had a blast with this for a while. Its basically a pet that you teach tricks, play with, explore places etc.

Thanks for all the great ideas!  Do you think I might also like Grand Theft Auto 4?  I feel like for $20 it would be hours and hours and hours of gameplay but I'm kind of wondering if the annoying accents would drive me nuts?! LOL

 
Glad to hear you've picked up a new hobby and that you enjoyed Alan Wake and Bioshock Infinite. I wrote up a DLC guide over at trueachievements.com but yeah you can use that and its core game as my recommendation. I'm not too much into Westerns either but you can't go wrong with Red Dead Redemption, I'll tell ya that. Yeah leave off L4D2 and Bioshock 2 as those are dark games and L4D2 doesn't have a strong story as the others. I think you'll like GTAIV and as for Kinect other than what's already said I'd add Fruit Ninja Kinect Nike+Training and Kinect Sports. Good luck with your new hobby.

 
Rayman Origins is a platformer like Mario, but super bright colored and fun, and especially good/forgiving with friends to play with

for "family" games, check Viva Pinata and De Blob 2.

I've played Rayman Origins it's really fun!! I'm thinking about buying it eventually, but a friend has it already. :)

 
Yeah Rayman Origins is a great game but it's calling back to old school platformers so the difficulty could be frustrating for some.

Yeah we used to play it before I was really used to the xbox controller and I got so annoyed but I played it again recently and it was much easier than before! Still a difficult game to beat though I'm sure!

 
Tomb Raider is great, Enslaved just like skiy recommended(it's a very underrated game) and you might want to give Fable 3 a shot right now since that's free.

Yeah we used to play it before I was really used to the xbox controller and I got so annoyed but I played it again recently and it was much easier than before! Still a difficult game to beat though I'm sure!

Yeah a few of the later levels drove me nuts. Lots of trial and error required as you have to memorize fast scrolling levels and hit all jumps perfectly to get through them etc. I'm not big on that type of gameplay these days.

 
A couple of games off the top of my head. For the record, I have over 60K gamerscore, and I also enjoyed Alan Wake and Bioshock Infinite (two of my favorite games on Xbox).

Games for you:

-Mass Effect (1 and 2 mostly) You would love these. If you enjoy a real story in a video game, this is one of the best. I would grab the Mass Effect Trilogy collection.

-Dishonored (A steam punk stealth game. Very good. I consider the art style to be very similar to Bioshock Infinite. 

-Fallout 3/New Vegas (Check these out. Two of the greatest games in recent years. I don't know how well they've aged, but I am sure they are still fantastic.)

-Skyrim (I think there are a lot of people who would agree this is the game of the generation. Nothing has compared to it. Absolutely beautiful. I spent 100+ hours on this game. I don't normally do that.)

-Batman Arkham Asylum (And City, I guess.) Best superhero game on the Xbox. 

Red Faction: Guerrilla (Completely destructible. I remember being pinned down in a building by enemies. I then took a sledge hammer to the wall behind me and made my escape.)     

Games for the family (and you) :

-Kinect Sports (1, not 2) Very solid sports game. Track and Field, Bowling, etc.

-Viva Pinata (Don't judge me. It looks like the stupidest game. However, after spending some time playing it, you will find its charm.)
 

Anyway, that's what I could think of. I am sure there are plenty more. Also, someone recommended GTA 4. I wouldn't play that. I don't know how many of you guys have played GTA 4 recently, but that genre has moved on. It is really old and slow at this point. Sure the story is thirty hours long, but it's thirty hours of driving and replaying missions (because you failed the unnecessarily difficult mission and there are no check points. Enjoy driving all the way across the city to play the mission again). If you want a modern sandbox game, I would recommend Saints Row 3 or Sleeping Dogs.
