Nintendo's Game Boy Micro Projects a Dynamic New Image

Best-Selling Video Game System Sports a Striking New Look

LOS ANGELES, May 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The original Game Boy(R) Advance fits comfortably into the pocket of a backpack. The retooled Game Boy(R) Advance SP fits into a coat pocket. Now Nintendo takes aim at the pocket of your tightest jeans with the tiny Game Boy(R) Micro system, quite simply the smallest and sleekest Game Boy(R) product that Nintendo has ever created. It's thinner than a cell phone, as chic as an MP3 player and as fun as a Game Boy. In an instant it attracts attention and positions the image-conscious player as someone on the cutting edge of cool.

The sporty, silver metal Game Boy Micro measures a mere 4 inches wide, 2 inches tall and 0.7 inches deep, allowing it to sit comfortably alongside today's hippest technological gadgets. It weighs an astonishing 2.8 ounces, or about the weight of 80 paper clips. Yet Game Boy Micro has the same processing power and plays the same games as Game Boy Advance SP models, complete with standard face controls and gleaming shoulder and Start/Select buttons that literally shine.

With Game Boy Micro, everyone plays with style. A removable face plate gives owners the option to buy replacements to customize the look of their systems again and again with new colors and designs. Most notably, its 2-inch backlit screen shines with incredible power, rendering games in startling clarity with fantastic colors on the best Game Boy screen ever. For the first time, users can adjust the brightness of the screen to adapt to indoor lights or outdoor sunshine.

"We're making the gorgeous Game Boy Micro for image-conscious folks who love video games, the ones who want the look of their system to be as cool as the games they play on it," says George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. "Because of its diminutive size and industrial-hip look, Game Boy Micro immediately identifies the person playing it as a trendsetter with discriminating style."

Game Boy Micro represents the latest evolution in the image of the Game Boy Advance line, but it is not a successor to any current system. Game Boy Micro will be released this fall. The system comes with a built-in, rechargeable lithium-ion battery and supports standard headphones. The Game Boy Advance line remains tied for the most popular video game system of this generation. More than 28 million units have sold in the United States, yet Game Boy Advance launched a full eight months after PlayStation 2. Video game fans clearly appreciate great game play and portability. Nearly 700 games are now available for Game Boy Advance.

This thing looks super SWEET! If they can hit $50-$60 with this then I'm sold. Anyone know if the screen is going to be the same size as the original one?

During E3 they had a slide showing all three GBAs side-by-side, and I would say that the Micro's screen looked way smaller than the original GBA's. If the whole thing is 4" wide, then the screen is only 2" wide, and the GBA was a little under 3" wide.

The whole system is only four inches wide and two inches tall. I'm thinking this could fit inside a regular SP screen.

Just looking at the picture in the article, isn't the screen smaller than the cart? I'm assuming that's the cart on the bottom of that thing.

Jesus...if that's true, why even bother? The SP already fits in a pocket just fine.

Marketed properly, it will do very well. The question is whether they chase the $50 price point or the $100 price point.

I'm pretty sure this will be priced to fill in the gap between the SP and DS. The target market is older than typical GBA. They won't blink at anything under $100 if it has a cool factor going for it.

this is a great idea. The D-pad is not going to be shitty like it is on the SP.

Great D-Pad + lighted screen = SSFII is going to be awesome

Also there is no way they shrink the screen. It would fuck everything up. The screen has been the same size for all GBA's and there is no way they deviate from that

It would have been cool if they added an SD slot and have mp3 playback ability. That way, you could use it as an MP3 player and a GBA. I doubt it really would have cost much more.

Unless this system is around $50, I don't see why anyone wouldn't spend the extra bucks to get an SP. The screen is bigger, and it's clamshell case protects the screen when you're not playing it.

I just don't see this thing being a big hit.

Seems pretty cool, but I'm pretty happy with my SP. If the screen is as good as the DS, then I *might* consider it.... if it drops to around $50 bucks.

The screen if it's only 2 inches diagonally it's retarded. The SPs screen was 3in diag. the only thing this offers is a brighter screen but its so tiny you'll have to hold it 3 inches from your face to see anything in detail. Also Nintendo already had a MP3/video player cart for the GBA that you could plug XD cards into but it's either not out yet or only in japan. but it wouldnt matter since the screen is so damn small on this thing.

Under 50 is the ONLY way they'll sell it.

The size is nice, and I like the look-- but the big thing for me was that the SP flipped closed, so I wouldn't have to worry about scratching the screen. Judging from the size, the screen is probably going to be quite a bit smaller.

Also, is it backlit? That's a huge plus, I can't play games that aren't backlit anymore because I'm spoiled by it. :)

I just watched the Nintendo Press Conference and I would be suprised if it is more then $39.99. When Reggie took it out of his pocket it looked like a keychain.

Personally I think it looks badass. And the Customization features are kinda cool.

One question I have, however, is can it play GB/GBC games too?
I mean I'm assuming it will be able to, but I can't recall this feature being mentioned during the conference....

Putting a regular GB game into this thing will quadruple it's size.

The hardware is the same, so it should be possible.

Did anyone here see the part that said, the actual system will be even smaller. Wait and see is the only thing I can say, during the actual E3 show they should reveal more information. Wait and see more is what i'm doing. And pray to god that's a concept tech moch up. Hopefully a flip screen, or some such thing will we inserted.

They were talking about the Revo, not the GBAM.

I'm guessing no. They specifically said it would play GBA games ... the DS doesn't play GB/GBC games, either.

It's impressive that they got the damn thing this small, but would I buy it? Hell no, I love my SP at it's current size and I don't need a small version of it.

At that size, people will eat it up. They can probably also manufacture it pretty cheap with the smaller screen. I like it. I probably wont buy it, because I don't have time to use a handheld, but I definitely think it will appeal to the "Image Concious" consumer.

dunno, I think this thing is worthless unless it has a decent price point like you guys say at 50 dollars. otherwise it's just another traditional nintendo attempt to jack your money ;)

You are incorrect in your assumption, the GBA-M is just a smaller GBA-SP with a backlit screen there's no reason why it shouldn't play the older GBA games. The DS dosent because as a separate arm of development it would be redundant to have two systems that play outdated GBC games.

The one thing I have to say about the GBA-M that I like is how it's remanicant of an old NES controller, but the size of that screen will prevent me from trading in my SP for a M... maybe if it's under 50 and I can get more than 5 bucks trade in on my original GBA I might but otherwise it can stay in the store.

I agree - I think "image conscious" consumers are all morons. Who gives a shit what it looks like when you are playing or what others may think? People are so worried about what everyone else thinks...

The kids still in school mainly. They are all one big flock.

So if it is "in" within that crowd then its going to be a hot seller.

I think this is Nintendo's bid to get into your pocket. Right now I carry with me ALWAYS my cellphone, my wallet, my keys, and my iPod. I think Nintendo's goal for the Game Boy Micro is for me to add it to that list. The more I think about it the more it makes sense. If the price is right... I'd trade in my SP for this thing. I've got a DS for when I KNOW I'm giong to be playing games on the road... this would be the kind of thing that I would always have just in case. It's like Nintendo's response to cellphone games. They should throw in MP3 support... but I don't know if it possible in something this size.

Someone mentioned how cool it'd be to play Street Fighter on this, but I don't even want to imagine how small the life meters will look on this. Forget about names underneath, or points or anything (you don't need them to play anyway, fine), I just don't think it'd be much fun. I'm disappointed with this thing, is the the "new Gameboy"? No actual new system?...Just headaches playing on bus/in the car?

At least SP's might drop in price so I can upgrade to one of those maybe.
If it's that small then there is no reason why it should be expensive.
Yes, size is proportional to price, everyone knows that.
