GamersGate Features
  • One biggest feature from GamersGate is the use of Blue Coins.
Blue Coins are GamersGate’s virtual currency, is a reward program earned by purchasing games or by simply participating in activities, like pre-ordering games, reviewing games, rating games, and becoming a game tutor; who helps other users with game issues or questions. These coins can then be used to purchase games.
  • You don't need to worry about region restriction. Unlike direct2drive or maybe for some games in steam most of gamersgate game its for worldwide direct download.
  • No need for a client, no need to be online to play a game (depend on the games DRM), just click and play.
  • Patches is usually faster than Steam.
  • You can re-download your game anytime, you can burn the installation files to a DVD.
  • There's no DRM for most of games including Paradox and Capcom titles, there no other and you can view what kind of DRM the game has before you buy that game, if it comes with Steam DRM then the page would say it comes with a 3rd party DRM and you need to install client for it.
  • You can find most of Steam games on GamersGate with a low price, register the key into your Steam account so you can download it from Steam later.
FAQS

Is Gamersgate similar to STEAM meaning do you have to run their application to be able to play the game?
Do you need an account to actually play the games? or is the account only used for buying?
No, GamersGate is not like Steam.. You have to set up an account, but it is only for purchase.
Is the downloading in Gamersgate done via a special proprietary application or can you simply use a browser to download it?
Is resuming download possible or do you need to download it all at once?
Downloading is done through a proprietary app that requires .NET 2.0. Yes you can pause and resume a download, there's an option for it.

Is the downloading format of the game a single file? one you can easily backup?
Is it a EXE file? Is it encrypted in any way?
Downloads may vary, Stalin Subway comes in .bin files, other games comes in full folder with encrpted setup file (.exe), these are decrypted with the GamersGate downloader. All files can be backed up like any others.
Is the installation of the game independent from Gamersgate meaning you just run it like any other normal installation wizard? or you need Gamersgate to install the game?
You need GamersGate downloader to install. Once the files are decrypted, games install normally. But if you really want, you can use copy-paste trick (I would explain this later) to get it fully decrypted without using GamersGate downloader

After the game is installed does it rely on Gamersgate for anything? or is it just like any normal PC Games, total independent?
No, it's just like any game.
Can the installation and running of the game be made totally offline and without any internet access?
Like you download it in one PC, backup the download file to a USB memory stick and transfer it to another PC with no internet access and install and play from there without any problem?
Games run offline, it depend on the games original DRM (GamersGate don't have their own DRM), if its using STEAM then you can visit Steam website and check their faqs about their DRM. A game can be backed up and moved without problem.

For more info visit GamersGate FAQS
TIPS

How to make GamersGate games setup file fully decrypted?
  • You need to do this step during the game installation process after you finish the download (choose to keep the file in the downloader option).
  • If you already choose to keep the temporary file in the end of download or you already keep the downloaded games, then you need to run the setup process via GamerGate downloader that came with the game once again (no need to install)
  • Make sure you know the downloaded games folder location (in most case its inside GamersGate temporary files folder), and browse for the game setup file/launcher (.exe). If you don't know which the file is, check the folder without running the downloader, look for the "launch" file (without extension), check the size and look for the same size .exe file inside the same folder during the setup process.
  • Copy-paste the .exe setup file to another place outside the folder.
  • Close the downloader and copy-paste/cut the setup file back to their original folder.
  • Now you can rename the folder to the game name, run the setup directly from inside of it (without using the downloader), make a back up or move it to another place anytime you want.

Nope...Enhanced Edition is the "penultimate" edition. The Director's Cut is just a way to differentiate between the standard US version.

Thanks, but "penultimate" means second to last?

Of course there are the downloadable mods! But as far as out of the box stuff, yes, the EE is the most you'll get.

Thanks for the info.

I am tempted to get this even though I have the retail Enhanced Edition because it has Tages and a disc check out of the box. I'd prefer not to have to install DRM and then patch it out.

Also, I'm dumb and enjoy buying the same thing more than once.

I don't know about Gamersgate, but I believe the installation file from Direct2Drive includes TAGES. I'm not 100% sure because I never bothered installing the game from D2D (I bought the GOG version a bit afterwards), but D2D provides a "Director's Cut Patch", which should be patch 1.5 that removes DRM.

If you want to be sure that the installation file is DRM-free out of the box, I'd wait for a sale at GOG.

Hmm, already own Tropico 3, but 2.50 for the addon ain't too shabby. Also eyeing up Saints Row 2 for $3.74. Hopefully these prices hold until I get home, tired of paypal locking my account everytime I try to logon somewhere else...

From Steam's forum on Saints Row 2...

I bought the German version and nothing works! What can I do?

The German version is extremely censored and thus incompatible with almost every mod, fix, or tool outlined in this FAQ. Unfortunately, you cannot use another region release of SR2 on Steam if you live in Germany. Saints Row 2 on Steam is a special case where all other uncensored regions are blocked from running by the IP of the player.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT BUY SAINTS ROW 2 FROM GAMERSGATE! All of their keys for the game activate as the German censored release on Steam, even if you live in a country outside Germany!

Wow, that's a damn shame! Good looking out man, saved me 3 and change. Thanks!

I was literally just about to purchase this too : /

That really stinks oh well.
I wish The Witcher registered on Steam, I would be all over it.
You should grab it anyway. It's a fantastic game, and the Gamersgate version is DRM free. Just add it as a non-Steam game to your library, if you want it in Steam, but 3.99 is pretty cheap for such a great game.

Was going to post about Tropico 3. That is an incredible price and would encourage anyone who is interested to pick it up.

They also had Tropico 4 (pre-order) for $19.99 early this morning, but I believe it was a mistake and has since been corrected.
been hearing great things about this. but all the zombie games are making me reconsider
I absolutely love the game. Everything about the game works well and it is an overall excellent multiplayer experience. I cannot recommend it enough.
Does the Gamersgate version of Killing Floor activate on Steam?
I just bought it, yes it does. On the gamersgate website you just go to killing floor under your games list, press "get key" and then put that key into steam and it activates.
I was just about to pick up Saints Row 2, Steam says the keys can be activated on it, can anyone verify this?
heard it's the censored version
More games are being slowly added to the site, looks like 3-4 every couple of minutes.
From 12:00pm-1:15am, went from 395 offers to +476

$4.99 Red Faction Guerilla
$5.00 Blade Kitten
$4.99 Hearts of Iron 3
$16.98 Civilization V
$7.98 Bioshock 2
$5.08 Company of Heroes
$3.38 Company of Heroes: OF
$6.78 Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor
$1.98 Freedom Force
$1.98 Freedom Force vs. Third Reich
$5.00 Sniper Elite
Man, I really wish pretty much any of those would be able to be activated onto Steam.

Was just lurking in the Steam thread, and noticed that Direct2Drive has matched the Saint's Row 2 price of $3.74 (might have to pay tax, as I did, but still, $4...).

I bought it, and Steam accepted the key!

Highly doubt it's the censored version (Steam read it as "Saint's Row 2 Retail", not sure if it'd be different for the German version)

Now to make an even more appalling character than before....

Just Cause 2 for 5 USD
it seems to be redeemable on Steam

Question: if I buy the game on the site and give the key to someone to activate on Steam, how does that work? Will my copy on Gamersgate just become useless?

Just got this now from GG, and it activates on Steam.

The DRM info said "DRM:Requires a 3rd party download and account", and it does mean that this game redeemable on Steam

Since its a Steam games it does mean all Steam rules would apply.
You can only activate 1 game to 1 steam account, you can still download the installer from Gamersgate for the backup purpose but your serial key won't work with different Steam account if you already registered the key.

You don't have a copy on GamersGate. "Requires a 3rd party download and account" means that the copy you bought is for a copy of the game from another company. Usually seeing this means that you're buying a copy of the game from Steam, and since the game is listed here, it definitely means that the copy you buy from GamersGate is a Steam copy of the game, otherwise you would be buying a GamersGate copy and a copy that you register on Steam (two copies of the game), which is a "no-no" in the world of digital download games.

Therefore, to answer your question, you don't have a GamersGate copy, if you give your friend the CD key that is provided in your games section, he'll have your copy of the game, and you no longer own the game at all. You're just left with and empty dvd case, metaphorically. Possibly the ability to download the game from them, not quite sure, but that's useless without a CD key.

Precursors is $9 (check it out!), and so is Xenus II White Gold (the sorta-sequel to Boiling Point, maybe check it out!).

That's not always the case. I've been able to download Bad Company 2 from Amazon, where I bought it, and from Origin, where it also registers, for example. But one steadfast rule in the world of downloadable games is that they're all digital, meaning that we don't need to waste e-ink with redundant "digital"s. ;)

Edit: I should probably throw in another recommendation for Just Cause 2, for anyone still on the fence. $5 is a bargain! But please note that it will not run on Windows XP. You require Vista or 7.
Homefront is 70% off, making it a very nice-looking $14.98. :D
Think you missed the 5 key. I said I'd bite on Homefront if it went below $10, and I'm sticking to it. Game looks very average.

I know that Gamer's Gate's version of Saints Row 2 activates on Steam as the censored German version, is the same true for Homefront?
