50% Off Sale

Edit: It looks as though more games are being added to the 50% off list on 3/25/07. Here's what jaybsooner is reporting:

The prices will be listed on the price drop reports as 1 cent drops making the game prices end in .98. The 50% will be automatically deducted when the employee hits the Total button. It's very unlikely that there is any signage or changes in prices actually displayed at the stores yet.

Okay, details are still rolling in and we don't have a full list yet, but we're getting there.

FAQ (Read before you ask a question.)

Q: Are used games included?
A: No, this is only for new games.

Q: Is this sale going on at normal Blockbusters?
A: Yes, as long as it is not a franchise Blockbuster. Most Blockbusters are not franchise locations. Call your local store and ask if they are a corporate or a franchise store if you are unsure or check a past receipt to see if it says "Blockbuster Franchisee".

Q: The games are scanning at full price, is this sale for real?
A: You won't get the discount until the employee hits "Total" on the register.

Q: Do Blockbuster gift cards work at Gamerush?
A: Yes.

Q: Is this going on nationwide?
A: Yes, but see details on franchise locations above.

Q: My blockbuster employees say they don't know anything about the sale, is this sale real or happening in my area?
A: It's a good thing that they don't know and see above franchise locations information.

System Watch:

Some GameRushes have PS3's on their incoming shipping reports as arriving on Tuesday, December 5th. One of the local stores that actually received Wii's will receive 1 (One) PS3 ($600 Version) tomorrow. No firm reports on when the next shipment of Wii's will arrive.

Random News:

In a really strange turn of events, GameRush actually pulled a lot of PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube games from Previously Played status and put them back up on the wall to rent. There are still plenty of used games for sale, but I thought this was an interesting move on Blockbuster's part.




Random Tip
FIFA 2007 for the Xbox 360 is currently listed at $40 new ($60 everywhere else). If you pre-order it and pay for it in full now, you should be able to pick it up when it releases and save yourself $20.

To the people who got this to work, what how did you print it? I can't get it to print right. It either comes out 2 inches wide or a full page.
 
Does anyone know how long it usually takes for dvd-talk to send out activations, ive tried it with a yahoo and gmail email account and after 3 hours i still have nothing (and yes ive had it resend the activation email).

Highlighted the coupon on the dvd talk forum and then printed selection. scanned find :D

WOW, I took the night off of CAG and THIS happens!!!!! Amazing. I will try out during lunch. I have around $200 in credit...so this is AMAAZING!

I hope it works, it would be great if my store had NHL 08....and 4 other games ;)
 
I'm going to take the coupon with me to my local GR right after work. I hope I can get it to fly. Has anyone out there tried this in the Kansas City area yet?

WHen I saw this last night I was on my way out and ran to my BB cause I had credit I was dying to use. I than went to another bb and used another coupon. I got 5 DVD and 5 games:

Thats good enough for me. I tried getting some Wii games and GoWII but they were ALL stolen.

I cant believe some losers are getting what 20 or 30 games? Get a life, its more fun than playing games...

Well, looks like we have a good amount to try today.... iwill report back around noon. I have about 3 GameRush's that are "close", although I can only try one at 11:00ish, the other two on the way home (if we have success stories still)
 
I'll be trying it at lunch today. Please post any results so I know what to expect. I wonder if corporate already sent something out about this. Have my fingers crossed that they didn't.
 
I'm glad that I'm here in the thread for the ride. This is one hell of a situation for all involved. Looking at the games that some of you all are able to score is making me jealous, but I'm practicing some restraint on this one. There will be hell to pay with this deal...I can just feel it. I cannot imagine that Blockbuster/GameRush is going to sit idly by and be fleeced by this for too much longer. This will go down as one of the most entertaining threads of the year....so much so, that I think that the mods should start a new one altogether just for this supposed coupon.

I just used it, and it still worked.

I admit, though, I'm slightly nervous about it, as I still don't really know where the coupon came from. The guy said that they get reimbursed for the difference with a coupon... but with not knowing where this originated, I'm worried I just screwed over my local Blockbuster guy.

That, and the fact that the transaction is tied to an account so if Blockbuster gets pissed, they have all of my information.

I guess that we'll find out soon enough...if they decide to do anything at all. Something is going to happen today in regards to the scan-ability of that coupon, but with regard to what BB will be doing (to recoup losses, etc.) is entirely up to them. May not be worth the effort, they might think, and they might simply can whoever was most responsible. We shall see. Like I said, hold onto your horses, this thread is going to be this year's best.
 
This is just the first time I feel less like a CheapAssGamer, and more like a bad person.

Sticking it to corporate? No problem. Sticking it to the local manager of BB? If he has to eat it, I'll never feel right going in there again.

It was still scanning as of opening this morning. Within 10 minutes, my local middle of nowhere BB sold $350+ worth of games for $50.

I can't imagine what's happening in bigger areas. If BB doesn't catch this quickly, it's going to end badly for them.
 
I'm going to talk it over with the manager of my local BB (who is pretty cool) prior to using it. Of course, I won't be giving out any details of where I got it, but I just want to poke around a bit and see if he would get in trouble with corporate by allowing me to use it. And if he thinks it is is legit (how could it be?).

I don't want to totally screw him over and burn my bridges there.
 
Went to my BB, it was the first time I ever been in that store. What a sad store. They only had original Xbox and Playstation 2 games. They had no DS, PSP, Wii, PS3, or 360 games. I left very disappointed. The other one that was close to me must have closed since it is not there anymore. My sister lives really close to one so I will have to rely on her to pick up some games for me.
 
I'm sort of curious as to how many of them come back with anything. It's 11am EST right now, and most stores on the east coast have been open for an hour, or just are. If corporate is going to catch this, it's going to be soon.

That's what we all say. It feels kind of like BF or a launch day, doesn't it? Where some of us going running off, mostly East Coasters, and then are supposed to post. Of course, in all the excitement of coming back with hundreds upon hundreds of dollars of games for mere handfuls of dollars, I am sure that for most there will be too much happiness that they won't even remember to post...
 
Great deal! This is a fantastic way to force BB to jack up used prices in the future to recover from any losses associated with this coupon! Hooray for expensive used games and stealing!

I don't know if anyone has ever noticed this, but if you go to the grocery store with a manufacturer's coupon that requires you to buy multiple items (i.e. buy two packs of Oreo and get $1.00 off), the system only needs to register one UPC. So you can buy one pack only and then scan the coupon. The coupn will work and you'll get a really cheap pack of Oreo, however this constitutes coupon fraud, costs the store money (since they can't submit the coupon once they reconcile with stock) and can get you banned from the store.

Just because a barcode scans and "works" doesn't make it OK to use.

Honestly, BB is going to lose a ton of money over this, and I'm slightly worried that they will be looking to take it out on someone.

i went to the local blockbuster here and they only had used original xbox and ps2 games...thats it! so i didnt even try.....when i get back to vegas this afternoon ill hit up a few of the local blockbusters there

I did. However, they required a membership to use the coupon. I already had mine, and the guy behind me was forced to sign up for one. So, they have information on at least 50% of the people in on this deal, I guarantee it.

To make you feel better, before I used it I went into the store and asked the manager if it would work. He called corporate and asked, and they said yes. He reiterated "he's buying 5 X-Box 360 that normally cost $250 and he's paying $25- are you absolutely SURE it's okay to process the transaction." The guy on the phone ("Anthony") said yes, and the manager (though a little iffy) processed it with no problem.

They won't take it out on individuals - too much bad press. However, they will take it out on consumers by raising used game prices, limiting sales and Total Access even more severely, and continuing to increase rental prices.
It can be argued that they would do this anyway, but every loss increases the need for such tactics. It's simple economics, and the economics of theft never work out in the consumer's favor.

well....who the hell buys games from blockbuster unless they are getting a deal in the first place?

I have less of a problem with this mentality. By making yourself transparent the way djkunai has done, you're absolving yourself of responsibility. It's clever social engineering, and it still affects BB's financial bottom line, but he made the clerk accept full responsibility before taking action.
