Games that are better on the PC than on consoles
More info? I want it

Recently played the Lost Planet 2 demo and it was amazing.. read reviews of Lost Planet and it seems right up my alley (focus on arcade-style gameplay, light on stuff that doesn't matter like story and all)...
I have a Free and Legal PC game thread here - The minute it goes freeware. It will be posted.
Thanks for the info on Lost Planet. That was one of my 360 games that I was curious about whether it was better on the PC or not. Saves me the trouble of asking.:)

I'm keeping my eyes on Dirt 2's upcoming PC release. I had planned to buy the 360 version over the PS3 version , mainly because of avatar support (a minor thing , but it's special). But I'm well aware that Codemasters is one of the good PC developers out there , so I'm waiting to hear whether the PC version is as good or better than the already released console versions.
Just played it. That game runs like water with all of the bells and whistles on a meager system.

I installed it on my beefy rig and my strugglers and the game ran great on both.
Blizzard? When was the last console game they made....? Starcraft 64? Lost Vikings?

I would not put them on the same platform as Valve if you're talking about console development or ports. If you're just talking about quality PC developers known for PC games and continue to create quality PC games, I'd include Relic

My previously mentioned Codemasters seems like a fair addition , although I could be wrong about that. To a lesser extent perhaps I would also maybe add IO interactive , Crystal Dynamics , Ubisoft Montreal and Red Storm Entertainment.

Perhaps I'm not quite thinking about it in the same way you are.

Starcraft Ghost?
Hmm, I was just trying to name a few game developers that tend to do justice to PC gaming nowadays, and being the Valve lover I am and a ex-WoW and Diablo player, those two immediately game to mind as quality PC game makers.

The most recent game I played from Ubisoft Montreal was Far Cry 2, but it felt a little bit of a Console port.I think the Company is better known for their action-platformers than anything else (Prince of Persia and Assassin Creeds). As for the rest, I'm too lazy to look up what contributions they recently had to the PC gaming scene, so I'll do an update later.

I assume we are talking about Dirt 2 , since you didn't say.

I mainly brought up Ubisoft Montreal since they , along with Red Storm , have done most of the work on the various Tom Clancy series games. Most of which (except for the most recent ones) appear to be more optimized for PCs. Again though , I'm far from the expert on the subject.

Edit: Should have also mentioned Ubisoft Shanghai , since they also have worked on the Tom Clancy series.

Correct. My mistake. Dirt 2 is what I meant.
L4D... I played the L4D2 360 demo and I cannot believe people play L4D like that. It just isn't fun. Maybe, that is just L4D2...
I just got this in from gamefly, and man, I didn't realize how much better the pc version is. Graphics looked pretty bad and we won't even go into the controls.:)

While I play L4D on PC, I really like using a trigger button for shooting games. I'm considering buying a wired controller, but I'm just not sure...

That is the only way the ladies of the house will play any PC game with a gamepad.

You can get some sweet ones for $12 or less @ Staples.

Haha, I was raised on consoles... thank you very much. PC FPS games also tend to make me dizzy, just can't game too long before I feel like I'll puke.

All my girlfriend plays on PC is Snood.

I'm going to have to check out Staples then; I was thinking I wanted a wired 360 controller, but they're still a bit pricey.

I started with both. I got a Sega Master System for X-Mas and at the same time I found an Amiga in the trash and the rest has been history.

Consoles games were great for a time but as of late (since DC) all the games are too easy for me. Can't see myself spending more than $20 bucks on a game and ending it in one sitting.

The way my PCs are setup - Everyone thinks we have console. I have my dedicated War Chair for old fashion desktop gaming. I got the projector hooked up to a media PC with 4 wireless controllers with over 2000+ games (fighting, platform, 2-4 player side scollers, 2-4 player top down shooters, sports, music. odds) and I have a few in the bed rooms of the kids and myself for late nite gaming/movies with a mini-projector. All that I have yet to hit over $500 for each :)

I dunno, going back to the controller from the mouse was a huge change for me, I felt like I didn't have any control over where I was aiming.

Okay, I'm really intrigued in your setup, since this isn't the first time you touted your low-cost gaming machines. Mind listing the specs of your daily-gaming-drivers?

Speaking of games being better on the PC, my lovely brother was kind enough to send me a copy of Dragon Age: Origins, and it arrived 2 days ago.

Mhhmm.... Bioware is still the king of Western RPGs, with Bethesda being the heir-apparent.

Yes. My console friends are very angry about that gaming being so much more superior on the PC.

Not the mention the mods...
Are there any "couch coop" games out for the PC?
There are a lot of them.

Sven Coop is a MOD for HL that has a loads of maps and mods.
I have over 300+ Shooters with 2 to 4 players some are listed in my free and legal PC gaming thread here - http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=244468&page=13

There a ton of Mugen Fighting games where you can do 2 vs 2 online or on the CPU.

Frets on Fire has coop music mode.

AVA

Nexuiz

Savage 2

You can rock all of those games and more on gamepad alone.

Does anyone still play Savage 2? Savage 1 was awesome.. I bought S2 when it was on sale steam for like $5 and no one was playing.. Haven't tried booting up again since.

Savage 1 and 2 are free to download and play.

If you check out the free PC games - I have it listed. I played it early today - I never seen it with a fewer than 1000+ players.

I'm surprised that this thread has remained as "popular" as it has. Good to see some continued discussion on the topic.

Bumping this for more questions. With Steam's holiday sale going on , I'm using this as another opportunity to "replace" some of my console games with PC versions. But as with before , I'd like to find out whether some of the games may or may not be worth replacing in the first place.

Omitting some of the games that I've already asked about before (warning , large list ahead):
Beyond Good and Evil (think I might have asked about this one before)
Bioshock
Blazing Angels 1 and 2
Brothers in Arms series
Call of Juarez 1 and 2
Chronicles of Riddick (oddly enough , heard that the PC version of the original game was better than the PC version of the second)
Ghost Recon series
Hitman series
Indigo Prophecy
Jade Empire
Just Cause
Manhunt
Midnight Club 2
Rainbow Six Lockdown , Vegas , Vegas 2
Red Faction (all 3 games)
Sid Meier's Pirates!
Splinter Cell series (I had heard that the splinter cell series was optimized for the xbox , not sure if that's true or not)
Stubbs the Zombie
Telltale games (probably don't even need to ask this )
The Last Remnant
Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. and Endwar (heard both of these were designed with consoles in mind)
Unreal Tournament 3 (anything , another seemingly stupid question)

Probably ended up leaving some games off , but that's all I could pull up for now.

I'll chime in with my experiences.

Bioshock is a definitive PC experience. If you have a nice rig and can make the game look purty, go for it. I don't have a state of the art rig but damn that game looks so good. I've thought about getting the console versions...but mouse + keyboard + sweet graphics + my surround? insta win.

I played and beat through the old Riddick first on old xbox years back and then on pc right before Athena came out. Old Riddick is fun and stands up well. The character models and lighting kinda reminds me of Doom 3 ish graphics.

I played and beat Splinter Cell 3 Chaos Theory last year for $6 at Half Price Books. Man it looks great. The first level features rain and it really looks good on Sam's model. I tried this year to play double agent on 360 and that game looks like balls on console.

I like Stubbs and own the steam version but I've only played through the original xbox. Quirky game. Based off Halo 1 engine. So don't expect state of the art mechanics. Killer, killer, soundtrack.

The issue I have with Riddick is partly DRM and partly content. When I mentioned the original release of Riddick on PC , it was the "Developer's Cut" edition that had extra bonus features not in the Xbox version. This made in my mind the PC version of the original game better. However , I'm unable to find anywhere whether any version of Dark Athena contains the Developer's Cut content , which seems like a disappointing loss. Combine that with the fact that Dark Athena uses Tages DRM on the PC (even on Steam) , it makes me feel like the original game is better on the PC , while Dark Athena is better on console. Not sure if that makes sense or not , and I'd love to be corrected if I'm wrong.

Generally, RTS, and FPS games are much better on PC with few exceptions (Halo, MW2 [PC version is stripped of everything COD4 had]) while games such as the Orange Box are much better on the PC than on the console. Also MMORPG's are obviously better on the PC since there is a much bigger user base and those games tend to work best with a keyboard. Personally I think racing and adventure games are not good on the PC and are better on console.

Yeah, for me generally shooters and strategy games are better on PC.... but it all depends... with the advancements in technology I find it harder to keep up so I sometimes get them for the X-Box rather than upgrade my PC for something, but I have to say I find it easier with the keyboard and mouse.

I hear you. For awhile I would have agreed that consoles sometimes make it easier for gamers to game. The thing is since the PS2 - Consoles are not as easy as they use to be and over time they are more expensive and you get less content as oppose to the PC.

Since, wireless controllers debuted...it's been a dead issue for me on consoles since I can program any game to use anything I want...from KB to gamepads.

If you follow some of the guides on this site alone on upgrading and rebuilding PCs. It will always be cheaper on the PC.
