Games Wii needs to see for a successful lifespan

Let me preface this thread by saying I'm not a fanboy of any system nor am I hoping any of them will fail. I own a PS2, Gamecube, a myriad of legacy consoles and I'm seriously considering a 360 purchase. But what I really want for Christmas is a Wii. That being said, I really don't see much more than 1-2 games that are "must buys" for the launch period and I'm leary of buying into a console that hasn't earned my hard earned $$ by showing me a commitment in development. I know it will take time, but here are some suggestions to Nintendo to make their gaming direction a permanent phenomenon.

I think Nintendo and others need to take advantage of the Wii's "touch"ness akin to the DS in order to mold and harden their market and become successful beyond their own expectations. What I'm afraid of is that we're only going to get a few good DS redux games and a whole lot of ports with tacked on Wii functionality. I don't want to see this if I'm giving them $400+ this holiday season.

With that, here are a few games I'd like to see on the Wii:

Point Blank Wii - one of my favorite playstation party games of all time that got a hum-drum rebirth on the DS. This game is perfect for point and click shooting with the standard Wiimote.

Real Time Strategy games. I'm not a diehard RTS fan or expert and have only played a handful such as Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds and 1-2 others a long time ago, but it's much more intuitive for me to use a Wiimote for this type of game than an analog stick.

Roller coaster Tycoon type sim games and their clones would do well on the Wii for the same reason as RTS. Point and click is much easier in real space than with an analog stick. I'd like to see one of these games have some depth to it, though, or take a different angle on the basic concept of if-you-build-it-they-will-come. There is a ton of potential in the business sim game genere that's never been simulated.

Kids games - I'm not taking just spongebob and crappy Nick jr. platformer games here. There seems to be a huge market for educational kids games such as the Leapster, Vsmile, and Fisher Price's console. Toystores have an entire aisle devoted to these new kiddie TV games. Nintendo should take over this educational market with Wii and DS compatibility. The DS's touchscreen AND WiFi could make them obsolete. And, with the large resources of major development studios, they could make better games and steal this market ensuring Nintendo brand loyalty for huge numbers of parents and youngsters for an entire generation.

Any thoughts?

I think Sports Games could make a big difference. It's becoming apparent that flashier graphics aren't making better sports games. Not only EA type games like Madden, but also "Mario Sports' type games like Mario Baseball/Golf and even another bowling game could be huge hits.

The games I think the Wii needs to see to be successful are simply games from 3rd parties. If you look at the release schedule (especially outside of this year) it's heavy on Nintendo titles. That's how it's been the past 2 gens for Nintendo, but IMO that's a major problem with both the N64 and the GC and I'd hate to see a repeat.

A second Zelda built for the Wii, 2 mario games, 2 metroid games, a good online Mario Kart, a solid stream of pick up and play party games and a couple killer FPS games.

how about some freaking RPGs, sony's monopoly on rpgs is the only thing forcing me to buy a PS3.

xbox had some good attempts, but in the end, all of them ended up as multi platform, WITH the later version getting alot more stuff.

as for cube and 64, there were what, 5 rpgs total?

1. 3rd party support = more sports game, rpgs, and "adult" games.

2. online gaming. they need to have a strong online community.

other than that i think the wii will be very successful for nintendo, maybe not in the biggest market share sense, but nintendo hasnt been losing money for awhile, and that sounds like success to me.

The Wii needs some Touch Generations games *stat*. Lock in the casuals, build the user base, attract 3rd party attention. Follow through on the blue ocean promise in a big, big way. If they can get prices down to $20-$30 for stuff like this, they'll be hard to beat.

For the hardcore, gotta have those Squenix RPGs. Namco also needs to bring a Tales game, and Atlus should get on board as well.. Would also be sweet to get a Nintendo-themed MMORPG running over the WFC. It's also going to be essential to get some "mature" games.

Kids titles are nice and everything, but Nintendo needs to keep hammering home the "it's for everyone" campaign. They can't afford to get railroaded into the "kiddy" image again.

I like several of the suggestions here:

1. Educational titles--though traditionally I don't think these have done too well on a console, I think whoever said this is right that we're in a different market today. VSmile and such are huge, and Nintendo is poised to really sell an all-in-one system.

2. Touch Generation titles-the DS has shown this to be a huge market, and it would be great for Mom and Dad to have games for them while the kids had their educational titles. Brain Age and others need to be on the Wii, or similar titles.

3. Fitness titles-much like with the two above, this would seem to be a huge market for the Wii if they could get taken seriously. Seriously, we had many on this board complaining about getting worn out playing just Wii Sports, imagine a dedicated fitness title, or line of?

4. ProSims-my term for a lineup of odd simulation titles that try to get it as accurate as possible. Imagine a fishing title that actually took the sport seriously using the Wii's controller? A bicycling game where you pedaled with the Wiimote and numchuck, and then leaned to turn. On a system that wouldn't require additional controllers to do these things, there would be a huge market.

5. Detective series-the Wii needs a series of games that put you into the footsteps of detectives. Maybe even something like a CSI game, where the Wiimote is your flashlight, and then you examine the crime-scene hands on using the controller.

These are just some ideas, but the Wii needs to push its two strengths--innovation and immersing control. Otherwise we just have another GC, and that wasn't the promise. Go wild with it and invite niche PC developers into it. Bring Sam and Max to the system. There's so much potential to be the "oddball" system if they will embrace it and not worry about getting the newest Need for Speed poor man's port.

3rd party support is absolutely essential. There needs to be at least three exclusive third party franchises that take off on the Wii a la Devil May Cry, GTA 3, and Katamari Damacy/Guitar Hero/Smackdown did with the PS2. Beyond hat Nintendo needs to sure up their online service in time for Smash Brothers but more importantly, in time for Animal Crossing. Regardless of quality, everyone will buy Smash Brothers, but as it stands right now Animal Crossing is the most important franchise for the Wii if you take into consideration both the success of the DS game (sales and the amount of people it drove online) and in terms of universal appeal.

There's about 5 franchises/games Wii needs to nail besides the Mario/Zelda "gimmie" answers:

1. Tiger Woods PGA
2. Star Wars lightsaber simulator
3. Super Smash Bros Brawl
4. Pokemon Online
5. An FPS that nails the controls

This is simple. The Wii is being sold as the console for everyone. In order to be successful, there needs to be games for everyone. Multiplayer and single player games that appeal to every age bracket/demographic.

Here are my thoughts on the lifespan of a console.

For a console to have a successful launch:

For the console to have a successful launch it has to have a hook. This is one thing nintendo has always been good at. Especially with the wii there exists several things to lure in consumers at launch , being the wiimote's intuitive controls and its reasonable price.

Also ...... MARKETING!!!

For a console to have a long lifespan it must contain:

Games that have limitless replayability For example "Mario Party". Another thing that a console needs is a game with huge competative value. Microsoft has Halo and Nintendo has Super Smash Bros. Especially good for the wii is wiiconnect. This gives the Wii an infinite potential for improvement.

Let me know what you think.

I like them all. I would be ALL over that bicycle racing sim. I hope and pray that some niche developers get in here. I could see the "niche" games becoming HUGE because of the controller.

The Wii is the only system i own at the moment as I normally don't stay interested long enough in games to even finish them. There are so many possible ideas for this system that there really is no reason that the WII shouldn't come out on top this time around. As he said, I am praying Nintendo get's the oddball games out there that really showcase the controller.

I thought GTA:IV was coming to this system. I remember in an interview somewhere(i'm too lazy to find it) that someone was talking about m rated games coming to this system and to "not be surprised" if we saw gta on it. That would help a lot.

I also think a gta game will do the wii some good but I think nintendo needs to focus on online games.

Nintendo themed fishing game, and pikmin 3. those 2 games would warrant my purchase alone.

Also I want to see some badass new puzzle games involving the wiimote.

How about a 1st person Indiana jones game with whipping motion, fisticuffs, and gunplay ?

Speaking of Indiana jones, they really need to make a Lego Indiana Jones Trilogy game for ANY console.

Great, we're talking about how a gaming company can turn a niche into an industry revolution and some asshole celebrity has to chime in with an obviously sarcastic comment.

fuck you Macy, your acting sucks !

That's a freaking great idea! Tony Shalhoub should sign up for a Monk game. Can you imagine?

The question was what games it needs to guarantee success

Therefore I thought of the most popular and loved games of today

Also, were you nominated for an Oscar? Yeah, okay.

psst, here's a clue, he's not really William H. Macy... Now only that but he's not very funny either and the real William H. Macy isn't much of a celebrity anyway.

Yeah, yeah, I forgot my smiley face at the end of my critique of Macy's acting prowess.

Detective series games is an awesome idea. I know my wife would be interested in a CSI or Law and order game. A better carmen sandiego or Nancy Drew game would make good kids games too.

How about some of the clubhouse games in some new collection? Darts online would be pretty cool. Curling or downhill skiing would be perfect for this control scheme. Come to think of it, an Olympic games compilation would rock! Archery, skiing, shooting, fencing, kayaking, table tennis, and taekwondo, anyone ?

I couldn't agree more about Wii needing original titles, and not just ports of PS2 versions of popular titles+a few gesture controls. (you need those too, however)

Elite Beat Agents-Gesture version would be pretty sweet if it worked well.. giving you like 8 or 10 gestures to use during songs, and then making transitions between them.. could make for a really fun party game, dancing and such.

Could we have the first olympic based game to get higher than a 5? I think maybe so.

How about a Croquet, Boccee, lawn darts, and Shuffleboard compilation for the old folks ?

And a corollary to the Point Blank series could be a carnival game compilation. Balloon darts, ring toss, basketball, frog catapult, and shooting gallery.
A "guitar hero" like game where you are a drummer, and you use the Wiimote and nunchuck as your two sticks.
Yeah, that would be one hell of a workout. Plus, think of all the great "drum-centric" rock songs it could include. I'm there, dude.
They should make a (good) game based on the 1985-hit-film "Top Gun"
Considering the tilt control is perfect for a flying game, you would think that something could have been in the works for a few years and ready for launch.

Miniature golf. I've never played a good miniature golf video game and it's finally the right time for one to appear on my television.

I've also paid a lot of money to play crappy miniature golf all accross this great country, so I'd be more than willing to drop $50 on a specfuckingtacular mini-links extravaganza.

Every single Nintendo series that is known for multiplayer in some way MUST be online. Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, all the Mario Sports games, and Smash Bros. need to be online.

Like other people said I am hoping for some sports game, especially after seeing how cool Madden is.

NBA, MLB, NCAA FB/BB, NASCAR, NHL, Boxing, Mario Sports Games

Every kind.

How about EA, since they dont have the MLB liscence remakes a game like Super Baseball 2020 instead of some dumb NCAA Baseball game.

THANK YOU. I've been saying this for YEARS, and this is the system that such a thing would absolutely rock on. I haven't played a good miniature golf game since MINI-GOLF on the old Atari ST. A miniature golf game, complete with windmills, giraffe statues, the whole nine yards is a must. In fact, Mario Mini Golf has a hell of a sound to it.

I'd even take this as a game:

And hey, there's Mario right there!

A singular announcement to the tune of Dragon Quest 9 in 2008 would be enough to secure the generation. Sony was mentioning DQ8 as early as 2000 I believe, and kept repeating it every year. There were spikes in PS2 sales just from MENTIONING it.

Then the smaller rpg devs know where to follow.

I'm also thinking it would be a great time to bring back Mutant Leage Hockey and Football. Mutant League Racing or Baseball would be a prime addition as well.

A minigolf game would be neat.

I went to this course in Utah once that freakin rocked. One of the holes had a ramp that led to a basketball hoop with a tube that ran to the cup.

It was tough to get into, but sweet when you did.

MVP NCAA 06 was a great game. This year's game needs to come to the Wii.

I'm thinking about a 3-D version of an Atari 2600 classic: Stampede. Riding your horse with the nunchuck, swinging and lassoing cattle with the mote would make a great mini-activity in a western style game. Yee-Ha!

Unfortunately this year's NCAA game isn't coming to much. PS2 only I believe.

Football, right? The last one was with Desmond Howard on the cover? That would totally suck if it doesn't come to the Wii.

Slightly off topic so I appologize for the thread hijack...but check out the upcoming rpgs for 360 vs ps3...360 is going to own ps3 as far as rpgs go this time around. Ps3 has FF coming up and that's it...360 has mulitple bioware exclusives coming among others.
