Gamesharing changing 11/18 from 5 to 2 Activation's! End to major gamesharing
They will lose a ton of sales and either go bankrupt (mid-sized developers) or press some discs (bigger companies). Digital distribution doesn't work for multimillion dollar projects.

I really can't see DD being profitable in the long run for full versions,

I imagine the # of full price games sold will drastically go down once these changes go through, who is gonna pay $50-$60 for a game they can't sell and get anything for it,

plus parents aren't gonna want to shell out big bucks for Billy to get tired of a game and just want something new.
Gabe Newell and Steam say "Hi" to you both....

Consider PC DD as the Harbinger of things to come on the console side. ;)

Steam is a barrier to entry for millions upon millions of customers. Do you think Valve has their games ported to home consoles for fun?

I won't argue with you that game developers crave digital distribution (to rip off customers and curb the second-hand market), but it will lead to a very unhealthy game market. The game industry has crashed before and I'm sure it can happen again.

Steam is awesome.. it's the only digital download service where I feel like I actually own the game I buy, and I can download and play on to computer (any ONE computer, that is). Plus, their sales are awesome.

Steam is anything but a barrier.

I agree with some of your points, plus I hate DD. However I'm not so caught up that I don't see what's happening around me and what changes are underfoot.

See this...

http://www.gamespot.com/news/gamestop-sales-tick-up-as-profits-slightly-sink-6346241?tag=newstop%3Btitle%3B18

Specifically this...

The retailer's new game sales rose nearly 5 percent to $879.1 million, but its digital sales business showed the most dramatic increase, surging 59 percent. GameStop did not break out the sales figures for its digital business, but the company's "other" sales category (which includes digital) was down roughly 4 percent to $245.6 million. In a postearnings conference call, the shortfall for the catch-all category was blamed on boxed PC game sales, which saw difficult comparisons given the previous year's launches of Sid Meier's Civilization V and Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty.

I know it's only Gamestop, but you only have to look at the Game Deals section of CAG to see Amazon DD deals, GOG, Steam, and many other companies DD games being shilled to the masses.

And I don't see the market crashing again anytime soon, regardless. They've learned from Atari's mistakes in the 80's from giving customers crappy half hearted systems with no software support, plus if we lived through the 32X, Sega CD, 3DO, Jaguar missteps over the years and came out just fine, unless Sony, MS and Nintendo serious bork up with their next systems the market will not implode even if they do make a harder push toward DD only systems. (which I say will NOT be the next generation, but will be aimed for the generation after, but next gen systems will be pushed harder for DD-only game releases, as they've been doing this gen)

As much as you might not agree with my assessments the proof is right in front of you, its up to you if you want to believe it or not. ;)
You guys/gals making it complicated as it should be... When you install a game purchased from PSN, the first thing you'll see is ACTIVATION. If it's already activated two times, you will not be able to play it on the 3rd, 4th or 5th active accounts. When you deactivate/reactivate an account from a PS3, the activation counter changes...

I too agree with SSJ, the new limit should be three, not two. I'm thinking about getting a third PS3, but I guess the decision is pretty clear now.

The only good thing out of this is the ability to activate/deactivate accounts on a computer.
The bad thing about deactivating from your PC is you have to do them ALL at once, you can't just pick one.

Steam isn't a barrier and Steam isn't why Valve games were ported to console. That's a PC vs Console issue not a digital download issue.

While Steam is awesome, but they can also be dreadful. I felt the same way till I had to deal with customer service and learning that they can and will ban if you do something they don't like such as file a chargeback, activate a foreign game serial, etc. And if they do well you just lost all your games. And because of that I'm now a bit more wary of buying on Steam.

The 2 console activation should work fine for me. Three would be better since I sometimes download my games on a friend's console. And I already generally download my game on my brother's console. So that would be three.

Well shit, I don't have a Steam account, but I do have a UK copy of The Last Remnant that has to be activated on Steam, I know the US copy of Metro 2033 I bought has to be as well, and I'm not sure if my Mass Effect 1 (UK version does or not, or if that just logs into the EA servers) now I know why I quit buying PC games a long time ago.

Can you elaborate on any of the games I mentioned, or am I just totally fucked with the ones I did buy that are not US region and require an online activation Steam or otherwise?

Don't most game shoppers buy from Wal-Mart?

I think you're absolutely right that game developers want digital distribution to become the only sales channel. I don't think customers will swallow it unless games become dirt cheap a la MP3s.

I can't stand DD either.

ok, big question here... i know how the old system works, but this new system...

could i still buy a game and sell one share of it in the game share thread?? Would the other person be able to deactivate my system or something? Any info would be appreciated.
@Serpentor, right now it gives you the ability to deactivate all systems tied to the account (limit once every 6 months). They are still working on the ability to deactivate single systems as per my conversation with a rep this morning.
do you have to personally call them to do this or can it be done through your own ps3
The answer to both questions is yes, but they can only deactivate every 6 months. If you want to gameshare now, I suggest doing it with trustworthy CAGs.
crap... thanks for the info.
