Saw this deal in the latest gamesTM (which is an excellent multiformat games magazine from the UK on equal footing with Edge IMHO) advertising a 13 issue subscription for $75. The actual price for the subscription is 50 pounds, which using current exchange rates ($1.65 = 1 dollar) comes out to $82. I've been buying the magazine at Borders every month for $9.99 plus tax since my prior subscription ran out about 6 months ago.

If you have never seen an issue of gamesTM, imagine a nice glossy 150-180 page magazine with excellent writing, reviews and a stellar Retro section in the back. You can check out more about the magazine by going to their website here.

These are all big articles from this month's GamesTM and EDGE. You won't find any of the GamesTM stuff online, although some EDGE articles are starting to be reprinted online now.
Actually you can check out quite a few of the archived feature gamesTM articles on NowGamer.com. They have archives for both gamesTM and RetroGamer at the link. Enjoy!

I actually saw this deal myself and almost posted it, but then thought better of it since I knew everyone here would threadcrap it like they are now.

Edge was $50 just a few months ago, and while I do prefer Games TM, I'm not sure it's so much better to warrant the 50% more expensive price. They'll always have me as a reader for their 30-page Dreamcast feature, though.

There was a great history of Game Fan somewhere that was linked off digg I think that had so many crazy stories of the writers of that mag. Doing acid and reviewing a game, etc. I was reading it as a 10 year old, so I didn't really pick up on the 'these guys are totally of their minds' at the time. I just thought it was a good mag. I also agree that Next Gen was amazing. Next Gen is/was my favorite video game mag of all time.

P.S. - I'd love a subscription to GameTM, but considering I'm unemployed that's not going to happen. Plus, I'm already getting GI, PSM, Esquire, GQ, and Playboy, so I've got plenty of bathroom material. (Thanks Amazon/Tanga for all the mag deals)
I don't even spend that much money on porn in a year. No way I'm dropping that much on a videogame mag
Post of the week WINNAR!

Dang, well the cover sure looks nice. I wouldn't mind trying it, and I'd love Edge...but I can't quite bring myself to :whistle2:/

GamesTM is a quality mag, I still have a subscription running in the UK, I prefer it to Egge magazine these days.

The game reviewers in GamesTM seem to have opinions closer to my own so I feel I can trust the reviews.

I don't know how close the people on this thread are to a B&N or how cool the sales people are there but since I'm not reading Games TM for the up to the minute news or reviews more for the interviews and editorials that aren't extremely time sensitive I just wait go to B&N after the magazine has been out a little while and read anything I want to for free. Nobody at my B&N cares in the slightest if you pick up a few magazines and read them there. It does kinda destroy the portable aspect of it but my B&N is less than a 3 minutes walk from my house.

The only magazine I would pay $75 for is the old PSM. Man, those were the good old days. They always have awesome cover art, great writers, some of the best exclusive info (heck, they got info before Official playstation mag got it.) and Playstation Lid and Memory Card Stickers/decals. What more could you want?

Nothing, that's what! I miss the days of PSM, that was the greatest day of the month when that magazine came in the mail.

12 bucks a year! That's why I subscribed. :)

yeah, they got you with the subscription. It was $5 cover for an issue or $12 for a year.

Still have a PSX sitting around here with the smiley face logo sticker on the lid

Great deal. I usually end up paying $130 a year on this mag so this will save me quite a bit. Anyone know of any deals on Edge?

To the OP, props to you for putting up with thread craps! It looks like a good deal for those who subscribe to import gaming mags like gamesTM. Although I read a lot of my gaming news online, nothing will replace reading print material in your hands. I already deal with enough technology at home and at work. It's nice to get away from all that from time to time. In this age of digital music, there's nothing like listening to my vinyl record collection...
EGM was on issue #236 and had been in print since 1989.
So that means that gamesTM has a chance to make it to issue #236 like EGM did before it folded...according to the OP, gamesTM is only on issue #86...which means that you'll lose your bet that gamesTM will fold before the OP's 12-month subscription is up.

Thanks for the props. I just wanted to pass along the deal for those who care. I don't really care about the thread crappers either. It's all relative to each gamer. I'm just an older gamer (just turned 39...!) that has a deep association between gaming and print media. I was an early subscriber to Electronic Games back in the Atari 2600 era when I was a kid & have been hooked ever since. I remember getting each issue of EG in the mail every month was like a godsend. It's been that way ever since...between GameFan, Super Play (Future UK's awesome SNES mag), EGM, Next Gen, Gamers Republic, Play, Mean Machines, the Paul Davies' run of CVG...I could go on and on.

Today I sat with an issue of gamesTM I picked up over the weekend (which I spotted the deal in question) at lunch and enjoyed my bit of relaxing reading for 30 minutes. Its my little way to get away from everthing at work & that's why game magazines work for me at least....

Future UK offers a US residents a reduced priced subscription through a subscription service here in the US (IMS). IMS handles all of the customer service, but the issues are still sent by Future from Europe. The price that they offer through this service is like night and day (it used to cost around $130-135 for a year of Edge prior to the introduction of this service)

You can find the US 13 issue subscription to Edge here. The current US rate is a cool $71.87 for an 13 issue subscription. Highly Recommended!

I never got into gamefan but Next Generation I read all the way from issue one until its demise. I loved it. It was the first mainstream American mag to start covering not just game editorials but industry and tech editorials. Things many mags are getting better in current years but not quite the level of Next Gen, (See EGM and Dan HSU's interviews with Jack Tretton and Peter Moore)

If this magazine rivals the writing and detail of Next Gen it is probably worth the money. If the economy was where it was a year ago I would have subscribed without issue. However, Where things are at I can't justify that price and especially not on an import.

I do however agree that I wish more US magazines followed this model. We all know the controversies of paid editorials which plague US Mags. It would be nice to have a completely independent magazine which was able to provide features and depth that the online blogs just can't rival. It would also make me more prone to trust their opinion and not think it is influenced by the latest sponsor. However, if such a mag existed. I don't see American readers subscribing at rates so high when they get game informer free with edge. I'm not trying to compare the two but to many people this would just be out of reach and my guess is the magazine wouldn't survive long.

pROvIs, Next Generation was actually the US version of Edge (see the post directly above yours) - they even shared a lot of the same content - and Games TM easily rivals them. If you don't want to subscribe to either magazine, they both frequently reprint their content online: http://www.next-gen.biz/magazine for content straight from Edge/Next Gen magazine, the main page for original content, and nowgamer.com for content from Games TM, though Edge definitely has a better presence online.

I can understand why everyone balks at the price, but it only comes out to $5.75 a month (well, if Smarch was a month, since both mags produce 13 issues a year) - that's less than picking up a US magazine at the newsstand. The US magazines are barely 100 pages of the cheapest paper and literally a third of them are just ads; Games TM - I haven't read Edge recently - is consistently 150 and maybe a tenth of those are ads, which means you're getting literally double the magazine for your $5.75 vs. your $5.99 US magazine, and with much better paper and content to boot. Remember that it's also imported from a country where our dollar was recently worth only half of one of theirs.

Plus, their subscription campaigns are better than our blow-in cards which drop all over the floor like a dog drops turds.

Thanks, even more money saved. Any chance Retro Gamer has a cheap US subscription? Thats the last of the three UK gaming mags I buy every month.
