So I just ordered an LE game from Gamestop.com due to their usually fantastic packaging for such games. It shipped this morning, the charge showed up pre-authorizing as usual. It was then that something strange happened. It is now this evening. The pre-authorization is gone. It did not, however, go through. My card has not a cent withstanding against it, and the charge is just flat out not there... Did I just get extremely lucky?

I worked at a bank and seen something similar happen before. But eventually the charge would just appear again out of nowhere. I would just give it a few days before you spend that "extra" money.

yea I've had that happen several times on amazon. Once it took three weeks for it to go threw, and I'd forgotten all about the order... it over drafted my account.

Lucky I have overdraft protection and all I was charged is a $5 service fee

...it does make me wonder if the banks don't do that shit to collect fees though, because I really doubt amazon would ship without having their money. (I got my order two weeks before my account got charged.)

This happened to me before. I ordered a game off Amazon Warehouse last year, but I forgot to transfer funds to my debit card beforehand. I had less than a dollar in checking when the order went through. I chose Prime shipping and I got my package, then the transaction was canceled by someone at the bank because I was so dangerously close to being overdrawn. It was basically a refund, and I was never asked to send it back, presumably because Amazon is such a big company they didn't realize what had happened.

Sometimes you just get lucky like that. :)

Happened to me during the HP Touchpad fire sale. I bought the 32 GB for 149 off of Sam's Club website. I had the money at the time, bought it, received it, forgot about it. 6 Months Later(!) the charge showed up on my account. I didn't even know what it was for. I called Sam's Club, they couldn't figure it out, eventually I disputed the charge with my bank, because, likewise, it overdrafted my account by a lot. I even ended up getting the money plus the overdrafts back, and then about 2 months later I had that AHA moment and remembered what it was for. Oops...

This same thing happened to me about 7 years ago. I placed an order for Zelda: 4 Swords. One day I look on their site and the order is canceled. No charge was on my credit card. A few days later I get a package with a tshirt and Zelda:4 Swords. I waited and waited and they still never charged me for it.

Lucky?

If you are not charged, you should keep it honest and inform the seller. But that moral decision is up to you.

Well, I got charged, damn it! lol It's Gamestop, so I honestly feel no moral obligation to do the 'right thing' with them. The phantom charge reappeared on its own, though, so it's a moot point anyway.

A pre-authorization isn't the same thing as a pending charge.

A pre-authorization just checks to make sure the card is valid and has enough for the amount in question. They usually do a pre-authorization if they expect there to be a slight delay or if they're unsure as to whether or not they'll be able to fulfill your order. A pre-authorization is their way of making sure they can charge you once they are ready to ship. When they actually ship is when they've earned the money and can thus, charge you.

This is also why most online retailers who claim to ship their items fast just issue a tracking number before they actually ship. That way, they can legally charge you and get their money even though they should wait until USPS/UPS/FedEx/etc. actually picks up the package.

When you do this, you're not sticking it to some big, evil corporation. You're sticking it to some poor sap in billing who probably hates his job to begin with. Then people wonder why we can't get good service anywhere.

Then he should probably do his job a little bit better. ;) We all have had hated jobs at one point another. It's better than not having on at all, though, and should be treated as such! I also didn't go and 'do' anything for this. It's something that could potentially have happened on its own. I'm not such an altruist that I would actually contact them to fix this mistake. Hey though, that's just me!

I see what you're saying, and that's clearly what happened here. I've just never had this happen before. It's always been in the preauthorization area, which is what my cards seem to consider all charges that haven't gone 'through' yet, then moved straight on over to being a charge. I have literally never seen a charge just disappear for a while then show back up. It's something interesting to look out for in the future, though!
