Gamestop in Canada

Saw today in Shoppers World Brampton that a Gamestop was going to be opening up in the old Music World location. I don't know if there are more opening up in other old Music World spots across the country or not. The mall already has an independent retailer and a EB Games. I talked to the EB games guy in there and he said he wasn't sure but he thinks the EB will be closing and letting the Gamestop just take over as his EB is apparently the worst one in the district but again maybe they will have both in there but it's a pretty small mall. Interesting anyway.

My local EBgames have been giving me Gamestop bags for a while, they're obviously the same company and it would just take a quick sign change, most likely.

possibly but I know they are getting a big new spot and in the states they apparently have more then a few locations across from each other or in bigger malls. Just have yet to see it in Canada.

Eb purchased all of Music World's remaing/liquidated stock and top priorty locations. As stated from earlier poster, Gamestop/Eb games will be aggressively openning all those old music world locations into Gamestops. So it will be the same exact strategy that is currently set up in the US. All major malls will have an EB games and a Gamestop. Big difference will be the set up of the stores, Eb will stay the same but Gamestop will become more of a gamers location and interactive gaming locations with competitions and tourneys ect. As well there are a couple of locations already opened with most being opened by Mid April. The Ottawa area will be a starting point for them.

I worked for EB games for over 7 years in upper level management and still have contacts within the company that I speak to on a regular basis. Once Gamestop purchased (or as the big wigs (steve morgan/james tyo) liked to say -A friendly merger) with Eb games back in 2005, the companies directive was to continue to establish the EB brand name in Canada, and to have over 400 locations within Canada with out changing the name, this way people wouldn't be even more confused ( As most people know out side the GAMERS LIFE,,when they say I bought this game at Eb games or "Just go to EB, i am sure they will have that in stock", many people will still have no clue what EB games is. Even to this day, when I tell people I worked for EB, they are clueless. So with out a massive media campaign such as Walmart or Bestbuy/Futureshop does, its hard to be #1 in the retail gaming world, so you have to pretty much have to rely on having the most available locations to the consumer as Eb does (another game plan as most have noticed, where ever you see a Walmart, you will now see an Eb games, smart thinking/move from the big wigs , People go there by the 1000's each day, no need to advertise as Walmart has already brought the people to that Smart Center or RioCan Plaza, everyone benefits . So now this buy out/take over will allow them to work on that (taking a bigger piece of the pie), as the Game Stop brand is a bit more front forward due to the american market and of course grabbing that extra dollars away from small time video game retailers in those major malls such as TSCC or Zellers ect. The easiest way to beat the competition is to be the competition. As for store locations they will be all the major malls,,such as Yorkdale, Square One, Eaton Center Toronto, SCT ect ect.
Hope that helps!

Seriously? I gotta go take a look soon then. At least it'll be bigger than the EB that's there now if it's opening in the old Music World location. I just hope that we don't get all the crappy stuff I've heard from the Gamestops in the states.

This was taken from google.

I don't know if this is old news, new news or what, but I was speaking with a friend that's going to be the new manager of a Gamestop in Brockville and he tells me that the company has taken all of the leases of Music World locations in Ontario and are going to put Gamestops in them, not to mention the fact that in Brockville, there is an EBgames about 4 blocks away. Anyway, just thought I throw that out for good or bad.

400 locations! You're right in the sense that the best way to best the competition is to be the competition! FS/BB have already proven this in CANADA. I'm just wondering why if they are going to keep the EB brand, since the same wasnt done in the US. In the states, every EB was turned into Gamestop, except for the ones that couldnt change their sign due to contracts with the mall.

Did the upper management at EB CANADA go through a "purge" like what happened in the US? Or did they keep the same people? Some EB Store managers quit shortly after the merger.

Also, do you know if GAMESTOP will use the same prices and promos as EB? Or will it be like FS and BB where they have the same system, but run different promotions and sets their own prices. I'm guessing the EDGE card can be used at both stores since it has both logos, while the EB GIFT CARD can only be used at EB.

Hopefully VANCOUVER will get some GAMESTOP stores come April 1st. All the malls you listed is in Toronto. I know that the busiest store in CANADA is Metrotown, and the 2nd busiest in BC is Coquitlam Centre. Is the roll out going to be cross CANADA or just ONTARIO come April 1st?

My music world outlet closed in my mall too right across is EB games believe it or not, so I am guessing they will be opening there. I can tell you that it is 2 times bigger then EB games.

The former Music World location in my town is still due to be turned into a Gamestop. Opening date is set for the first week or so of April from what I've been told. The EB games that's in the same mall is located on the "outside" of the mall, and not only will it remain open, but it will be adjusting its hours to stay open until 9pm.

I remember the thread we had on this back in January. Kinda interesting that Ranzo hasn't posted since that thread. Didn't he work for EB games at one time?

Ranzo is still the store manager at the mayfair mall in victoria. Still FAKE COMPETITIOn aka FS and BB style is still better than no competition at all. I've asked a few store managers and they are either cluless or pretending to be. However, since I'm in BC and EB's HQ is in Ontario, Gamestop might not arrive here on the west coast anytime soon.

The closest Music World near me is Landsdowne Mall literally located next to an EBgames. Doubtful they'll do something that redundant. :p

there was a musicworld about 100 feet from an eb games in carlingwood mall, ottawa. and it's at least 6x the size lol. interesting to see what happens.
Post you locations of where a Music World is being turned into a GS. Name the name of the mall.
Lethbridge, Alberta - Park Place Mall
There was a Music World in Masonville (London, Ontario). It's about 100 feet from EB Games.
YES another Londoner I am not alone!!!, you know there is another Music World closed in Westmount right, and across it is EB games. I will ask EB if they are opening one across them.

lol there was a Music World RIGHT NEXT to EBGames in Tecumseh Mall (Windsor On.) If this actually happens it'll be so funny to see an EB right next to a GameStop.

there was one in Stone Road Mall, Guelph Ontario! well not sure if its turning into a Gamestop but it would seem to make sense.

Place D'Orleans has one opening soon, according in the in mall advertising, but until I'd read this thread, I'd assumed that they were just rebranding EBGames.... The Musicworld was located at the East end of the Mall, next to the Zellers, and a better location than the EBGames currently....

Seeing this Thread makes me think, how in hell is there a Music World beside every EB games store in the malls around Canada? it's like they planned this or something 6 years in advance????? some want to put some input.

Talked to a few of the EB games guys in shoppers world today and they seem scared that Gamestop is coming into the mall. They were told not to worry but the one guy said there numbers are bad already and that even though there is a independent game store (We Got Games) in the mall it's going to hurt EB more then them. I thought that was funny. I then walked down the hall and talked to the We Got Games manager and he said he knew about it 2 months ago and says short term people will check it out but after realizing it's a bigger EB with the same crappy trade in values and high used game prices it's not going to matter as new release stuff is not his business. They have been in that mall for apparently close to 19 years?!?! Apparently there is one going into Square One as well and the Microplay in there is worried but that mall is huge and busy so I think they can survive. Shoppers World though has We Got Games, EB Games, Gamestop, Zellers and a Canadian Superstore across the street. A gamers paradise really.

Heh that's why I love living in walking distance. If I can't find a game at one store, I've got four more to look for it in. We Got Games has been there forever, it used to be called Aardvark Entertainment (or Aardvark something). Honestly, that's probably my favourite game store around. If they've been around for so long there's no way Gamestop is going to put them under.

I think it's more like, Music World and EBGames both target the same kind of malls so there's a lot of overlap.

Musicworld in Fredericton, NB closed and it is right between (within 2-3kms in either direction) two existing EBs...

I went into Shoppers World after work today to preorder Smash Bros and the guy at EB told me that the Gamestop should be opening up either today or tomorrow, or at least he thinks so. When I walked by the store it looked mostly finished and there were quite a few people putting everything together. The shelves were all stocked and the place looked pretty good, probably one of the biggest gaming retail stores I've ever seen.
Anyone know if the Music World in Lime Ridge hamilton is due/when?
Just FYI if anyone but me cares, there's been no work done to Lime Ridge Music World.. they still have the old sign/boxes/etc in the closed store. It's otherwise empty.

There is an empty Music World on the first level of the Rideau Centre in downtown Ottawa. It's about 50 feet from the EB Games on the same level just around the corner. Not sure if it will be converted, but from reading this thread, it sounds like there is a good chance of it.

So the Gamestop in Lethbridge, AB (Park Place Mall) opened today.

Honestly, its identical to EB Games. Same stock, same prices, etc. Not too impressive.

I went to the one in Shopper's World in Brampton, Ont which opened today. It is a huge store but basically at this point just a really big EB Games. All the stock was the same(of course), pricing the same and even still had EB stickers on the games. There weren't any opening specials or anything. The guy at the counter told me that only about 15 Music World locations were turning into Gamestops. He said that Square One in Mississauga, Ont is NOT getting a Gamestop at this point due to high rent. Kind of a disappointing visit really...I was hoping for something more...

I'm the Assistant Manager @ the Gamestop in the Lethbridge mall. Gamestop bought out EB Games a while back. It's the same company, same product. Niether store is looking to out sell one another. And from how it seems to be going, niether will lose any money.

Yes a friend told me there is a GS in Lime Ridge they are looking for a store manager apparently if anyone needs a job as a register biscuit.

I'am 99% positive the MW in Centre Mall wont be a GS because they are closing the mall and replacing it with some new mall structure.
