Gamestop is not going to carry classic games for much longer

Thought I might pass this by everyone. After 2/22, Gamestop won't be taking NES/SNES/Genesis/Dreamcast games in trade anymore, and most stores will have their stock sent back to their warehouse to be consolidated into a smaller number of stores. So if any of you CAGs are looking for more of these games, now might be the best time to go pick them up.

Boo Gamestop.

Found this out yesterday as well. Sucky thing for us CAG is they dont really plan on clearancing them out. Just maybe dropping the price a bit, but just letting them sell off

I noticed this crap the last two times I was at the mall -- electronics boutique appears to be pulling the same thing with their PlayStation games even.

I only go in those stores for classic games.

If I see something more modern I want, I might pick it up as an impulse buy, but unless the loss leader of the classic games are there, I won't even step with inside the store.

In fact, I just deliberately let run out my used game discount card over a game stop, simply because my local one isn't carrying the classics like they used to.

a shame there's nobody coming to replace these stores, because most of the classic game specialty stores online have vicious shipping
Any classic games I've ever seen in Gamestop were ridiculously priced. Good riddance.

I'll stick with Rhino.
What's Rhino?

None of my local Gamestop shops have had much of a selection where older games are concerned for several years. The prices on some games (usually cartridge only) aren't too bad, but with the junk they have left in inventory, Gamestop's current selection of "classic" games just isn't worth wasting the shelf space on. They haven't given decent trade-in values for most older games in years, so given that what they have left is complete junk, I won't miss them carrying it any longer.

Agreed! They really rip you on some of the older games. Some of the Nes or SNES games cost more than a ps2 game. I know these are extremes of both highs and lows of pricing, but theres always ebay.

Oh, I'll totally agree with you on that. I work for GS, and the amount we give for classic games vs. what we sell them for sucks. $6 for Mega Man X3, sells for $40? It's a total racket. Although the stores in my area do have a good selection of classic games, and they actually account for a good amount of sales. 5% of our total sales for the last 3 months were NES games, which is insane, when most stores can't get even 1%. Hopefully my store will just get all the stuff that doesn't sell at other stores so I can finish my NES/SNES collection out.

I did find a 2.49 copy of Dragon warrior on NES at gamestop, but that's about it. Like I have posted before though...GAMESTOP SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah it does.

Do some of you have a Game Crazy where you are at? Some of the deals I have seen on older games and their respective systems isn't too bad. The one here carried almost all the classic systems down to the NES (though not as far back as Atari, Commodore and their ilk.) The only problem I had was when I went looking for RPG's, they still wanted $28 for a copy of Shining Force 2, while most of the other genres sold for as low as $3.

Yeah I used to run a gamecrazy, The classic rpg prices are a bit much, but they pay the most for them from what I saw. They have an extra 20% off with the MVP card from time to time so you can pick up some good deals. And they also have a wishlist feature so you can normally get the games you want.

I work at Gamestop too and you know why you only get 3 bucks for it and we sell it for like 14.99? Because PEOPLE DON'T BUY THEM. Many of the people who purchase NES or SNES or GENESIS games at my store are budget buyers, meaning they only purchase the cheap stuff. Most of it sits on the shelf anyway, and it's not worth having it sit there when they are very easy to steal. That's another reason why they aren't worth much, because if they were stolen and worth something, it would give you more incentive to do it again.

spiritseed, are you still working in the industry or doing your own thing? Is Gamecrazy going to survive the shakeout? many Hollywood videos in my area have shut down completely with only 2 remaining with GameCrazy inside.

That explains why GS pays so little (sort of), but not why they charge so much. If they don't move at that price point, there is plenty of margin to adjust the price down (if they are not selling well anywhere), or just move them to a different market where they do sell (since I believe GS uses a comprehensive pricing structure where if an item is a certain price in one store, it is the same price in all their stores, and the manager does not have the ability to adjust it. But that is an assumption, and it could be wrong).

Just because an item doesn't move at $14.99, doesn't mean it won't move at a lower price. If Honda Civics were $50K they wouldn't sell either.

From what I can tell they are just restructuring, they are planning on opening another 100 stores in the next year. The managment structure (District, regional, National) Is really horrible though. I left because they would do things like...forget to pay you....threaten not to pay you if you don't meet stupid high quota's.....ship you broken crap from other stores.....not order new product...ETC, ETC,. So for all I know they could be moving downwards now instead of up. I am still in the industry and doing my own thing.

spiritseed, good for you.

I know there is too much competition brewing in the marketplace, which means it can only lead to price wars and benefit gamers in the long run.

let's see:

Gamestop (owned by Barnes&Noble)
GameCrazy (Hollywood Video)
GameRush (Blockbuster)
GameFixx (CompUSA)
EB
and so many more superstores/independents.
plus the Web
it all will lead to massive discounting... or on the other side of the coin... price-fixing.

The GameCrazy near me was holding bi-weekly tournaments and giving away hundreds of dollars away for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place and a few games. Then they stopped recently because they said it was never approved by upper management. They said that my particular location only had less than 20 "card members" and it couldn't justify losing $2000-$4,000 per tournament. WTF? hilarious. terrible way too run a business (into the ground).

Well, I won't be going to GS stores very often if this turns out to be the case. The only things worth looking at there are mostly lesser-known NES, SNES, and Genesis games. Even the N64 and Playstation prices are usually way high, and no I am not going to buy a used game (any used game that retails for $50) for $45. That is just dumb. In any case, they don't have many NES games that I'm looking for nowadays (I am pretty close to a complete collection and most of what I don't have is rare).

What's wrong with buying a used game thats 5 bucks cheaper? You get a better warranty, and if you don't like it, you have the option of bringing it back within a week. Buy it new, open it and hate it, your problem!

This sucks. Now Gamestops will hardly be better than EBs

EBs here have never had anything older than PSX. Plus their employees are usually major pricks.

If this happens, GameStop loses my business. Completely.

Really, the only things I buy at GameStop are the older console games with the occasional GB/GBA game. If they get rid of those games, I'll just switch to buying my GBA games new.

What sucks is that GS is the only store in my area that carries the older console games. All of the independent stores have gone under, and the (recently opened) GameCrazy stores don't have ANY older console games, IIRC.

These games are getting harder and harder to come by. No wonder so many people emulate...

All EB's suck except the one the town over from me. They have more classic games than any store I have ever been into. They have boxes of them along with carts stacked on top of each other!

I got StarTropics 2 :Zoda's Revenge with the box for nothing because of the buy one get one free and got Rygar for 8.

It is worth the 120 mile drive to my parents on top of the 30 mile drive to the town over(Cary) just for their excellent selection and nice staff.

Best thing though is that Monday through Friday Red Storm Entertainment is supposed to have play testing of Pandora Tomorrow(he found out at EB for those looking for relevance). It looks like I am skipping school monday if I cant make it back to Wilmington

Its stupidity, that breeds low buy backs.

If you haven't tried a game out, or done extensive research on it, then why would you blindly buy it??

I remember selling my original Playstation, 6 months later, for $120, including 3 games.

It was still retailing for $299.

That was FuncoLand, aka, Gamestop, Software Etc, etc.

These places have always charged 10X more than what they give you.

Its not classic games. Its all games.

You're the morons who support these places.

You're on these here boards, discussing deals.....So?,.....Start trading, and selling individually.

Some of you do, but at the same time, you'll trade in games at one of these F***hole stores.

Do you really think you are getting a DEAL, trading in 4 games for $40??

The games will sell for 2-3X as much as you traded them for.

Someone WILL buy them.

More than likely, its an unsuspecting parent, drawn in by the professional look of a SOFTWARE BOTIQUE. Therfore lessening the blow, that their child is a total GEEK. Buying a game at a store that sweet talks her into something shitty.

The kid opens it.

The game blows 4 donkeys.

And the kid,...he's F***ing miserable.

So what does mommy and daddy do???

They try to return the game.

UH OH.... :(

Little Timmy opened it.

Now you can only trade it in.

F***ing retards.

I don't know how many times I've been asked to leave a store.

As I listen to the F***sticks, persuade, manipulate, and flat out lie, to a parent.

I will blatantly correct any F***tard who makes the mistake, of doing it in front of me.

I had Target call the police on me once, and they lost. It was great.

Anyhow. Point is,...make friends.

You know that kid you are playing Socom, or Live with?

Set up a trade ring, amongst yourselves, and other players/clans/tags/etc..

F*** those stores.

Use them for their once in a blue moon deals, and be done.

They are worthless.

They are not gamers, only salesmen.

No offense to the employees on here, who actually play games.
There are a few.

Damn...drone8888 is back again. Anyone remember this gem?
I was going to list it on here, but I'm done with CAG.

I'll share with my friends, cause this is lame.
At the very least, please stop double spacing every damn line of your posts. It makes them hard as hell to read, and it's just annoying. People have been banned from the site before - remember Antonio?

[edit]Yes, I'm a bit bitter. I apologize for that - I really don't have a reason to attack drone8888. I'm just annoyed by that double spacing. That's not an excuse, however. Sorry.[/edit]

I was just at Gamestop and the managers were talking to what sounded like a gamestop (regional?) rep. who was telling them how they were getting rid of the older game systems. Seems odd they are keeping the N64 and PS1 but getting rid of the Dreamcast. From the sound of their conversation it seemed older game systems were really popular too.

Wow, someone cares.

LOL

Anyway, I'm trying real hard to deal with the people on here.

There is something different about you all.
No one is friendly.
Before I posted my first time here, I lurked for a while.

Nothing particularlly interesting, or intelligent going on.

I'm down with goofing off, but there are rarely any deals here.
No one knows much about technical stuff, either, from my gathering.
Just BS-ing around, and wasting space.

Its really disturbing.
You guys are like the flea market, greasers.
Other game deal sites, are more evolved than you.
It bothers me. I feel like I'm in a NYC adult porn shop, when I come here.
I don't know why.

Strangely enough, I find myself creeping about, over here, quite a bit now.

I'll try and be more constructive.
As well as using less spaces.
I can't help it though. My eyes are really bad.

drone8888, in your defense, you bring up some good points. I wish you would've toned down the language (i.e. not using "F***" every other line), though. It's true that places like EB and GameStop offer peanuts for trade-ins, but most people do it simply because it's a lot more convenient than eBay. Many people aren't salesmen - it's not worth it to them to prepare a listing on eBay, wait a week for the bids to come in, wait another week to get paid, ship the item, and follow up to make sure everything went well. It's so much easier to walk in to EB, throw your games on the counter, and get paid instantly. I have never traded in my used games like that, but I can see why others would. It's just a lot easier.

BTW, good work setting those dishonest salespeople straight.

Only thing I ever bought at Gamestop were the old peripherals. I picked up a Dreamcast Fishing Rod for 4.99 at GS. I also found the original Ascii one handed controller for PS1. An excellent RPG controller, also 4.99. GS always seems to have a better old school selection than EB. I will be sad to see them go. I wouldn't spend my money on anything else there...

Well it is a buisness. Software demand shrinks so fast, you're lucky you can get used games anywhere other than ebay.

Yes, you need to be smart to deal with these places properly. You should buy under the assumption that you will own your games/systems for life, or under the assumption that you will play and beat said items immediately. You lose value on things the minute you open/use them. You lose a little less if Items are rare or new releases. If you find a good deal, u can actually profit after you use them.

Are you kidding me? Only reason I walk into GS anymore! Ive gotten soo many rare games from them too! GREAT prices!

I guess I should try and go back to get that copy of SoM I saw a week ago... :(

Have you been to the one in Greenville? Besides the fact that most of the employee's are to busy behind the mess they call a counter to actually help you, there is a slightly decent selection of PS1 through current gen periphreals.

And they have loads of NES/SNES/GEN stuff but the prices are so horrible i wont touch most of it. (15 dollars for scuffed up out of box SMB3? pfffft.)

I just stick to their near average DC and cheap PSONE stuff.

I never thought the gamestop in my area to overcharge, I found them to be pretty fair actually, I just recently traded in around.. 50 PS one games and got 270 dollars, thats not that bad considering at a garage sale id get prolly 5 bucks a pop for em. Also I bought a dreamcast 2 extra controllers 2 vmus Marvel vs Capcom, Powerstone 2, Grandia II all for under 50 bucks... The prices at my gamestop are pretty fair.. i see price on the site and think wtf? then go into the store and its way cheaped and im pretty happy about my purchases

sorry that i didnt bother with punctuation =/

where the hell are you going, closedsocket? the kid's dad i babysat for recommended gamestop to me, only because he said he got 50$ for a brand new SP and 8 new games to go with it, so, like the cheap ass i am, i was instantly lured.

i found that not only were there no deals as amazing as that, but for a scratched up screen and used out GBA, it's 50$ of my hard earned money. and NO deals to go with it, either. so i ended up paying another 13$ just to get a damn game for it: castlevania: circle of the moon, and the sticker was partly scratched off and looked like juice had been spilled on it, completely out of the box and nothing with it. thankfully, it still worked.

now, i love my glacier GBA since my GBC got stolen (i get jipped often, don't i?) and i hadnt had a portable system in years. but for the games that i scanned briefly on the N64 and super nintendo games, they were at least 9 for the super nintendo (used), at least 12 for the n64 (used), and i couldnt find a single GBC game under 10, used. oh yeah, and those were the GOOD prices.

seeing as how ive been scammed many times and have been stolen from, ive signed up here to try to get some of my moneys pay back. im not up to par yet with the stuff that was taken from me, but i got castlevania: aria of sorrow for 7.48$. now that's a goddamn start.

ps, if anyone wants some old GBC games that are used but still in good and playable conditions, PM me. ill give you good deals, but i dont have that great of a selection, since they're almost completely worthless. In fact, ill just about give away pokemon pinball: red and blue for free, just to have it out of my possession and away from my burning eyes.

sorry about all the damn text. didnt mean to drone on like that :(

Well my local gamestop is in Weatherford Texas and its only been open for 6 weeks, I think the staff there is very helpful :)

Maybe not all gamestops are good, but mine is. So, I am actually sad to see them stop carrying the older stuff. I guess they arent the best place to trade in stuff... My brother traded in a ps2 for 110 $ store credit, and they sell em for 129.99.... so thier not making a HUGE profit, but thier making a profit.

This development disturbs me also. I have regularly used Gamestop's website to keep an eye out for and run down hard to find games. I got Shining Force 1 and 2 for $5 each that way, for instance. Ever since the close Gamestop stopped holding DC stuff, I haven't really been back. I've gone to the old Funcoland one that keeps the classic stuff.

Keep your eyes on the pawn shops. It'll be all parents have left to unload old systems.

Bump

Just a Reminder, Sunday is the last day Gamestop will be carrying things like DC games.

I was just in mine, and the manager told me to grab what I wanted cause it was being sent away on sunday. For a second I thought she was going to cut me a good deal, but no, she just said to buy it before it was too late.

Still, I got Skies of Arcadia and Powerstone 2 in great shape, complete for under 30$.

This makes me sad.. The GameSpot near me had loads of games for a good price. It's a shame to see them go..

There's always E Bay!

Actually some stores are just shipping thier games to other stores. my local GS is getting MORE NES games soon, and possibly other items as well.

They stopped with the NES games at the GS I go to. Which sucks 'cuz I wanted to get that NES game Magic of Schew...something they had.

I just want to know when they plan on doing something with the prices on most of the orginal Gameboy games. I must have seen at least two dozen games like Robocop and Tetris 2 going for more than $20.

Amazing, looking back at this thread brings crazy memories. to think that Classic prices have gone up since then. There are 8+ stores(Not counting Pawn shops and flea markets) within an hour of my hose that resell classic games. all prices mentioned in the thread woudl be considered good prices!!

Hehe my mall has a store called Phoenix Arcade and they sell all the old stuff back to the atari. A tad bit overpriced but its fun to go in there and see the Atari Jaguar sitting on their shelve. Btw i hate gamestop.

We have several stores like that around here. I picked up 2 Jaguars at a garage sale last fall. They are kinda cool, but E-Bay was calling for them, so they are gone.
