Read this on gamefaqs and was wondering if anyone can verify. If its true its a BIG reason never to shop at Ebgames or Gamestop again!

It seems that by the end of March, Gamestop/EB will cease selling ANY used DS games with boxes or instructions. They will instead be held in temporary cases until sold as just the game cart, much like the way they sell GBA games. That will be OFFICIAL COMPANY POLICY so if you do decide to trade in a game there, they'll pay you the paltry sum for the trade-in, toss your box and instructions and sell the game back to the public who just doesn't know any better.

Oh yeah, this is going into effect for PSP games as well, since its considered to be a streamlining process!

Credit goes to the original poster, nimerjm37 from gamefaqs.

GET YOUR USED GAMES BEFORE MARCH 31st if you want them!

Will they be tossing them all out back on the 31st or 1st? If so, I'm ready to dumpster dive and get friends who work at EB/GS to try to get a ton of them for me...

wtf thats just stupid

I still don't understand why they throw away instructions for gba games (boxes I get though) but for DS and PSP? what does that save them

someone sick the environmentalists after them on this

Hopefully someone at gamefaqs is not trying to pull an evil april fools joke, however I doubt thats the case because most of the handheld games in the stores near me are already sold without case or manual.

The dumping will happen April 1st from what I understand, and there will be no warning to customers that this is going to happen!

Its supposed to be done to streamline the computer systems and to save shelf space so that all handheld games can be placed together in the store, in a handheld section.

Time to send my grandpa dumpster diving....

Don't the replacement cases take up just as much room as the original cases? They do for the DS if I am remembering correctly. Talk about retarded.

This is going to be a HORRIBLE move on gamestop's part and I can truly see this backfiring on them.

Unless this was just sent out today in email, this is NOT the case. DS/PSP games traded in without the boxes/instructions will be sold that way (or you'll get a generic case to keep it in). The games traded in with boxes will still keep them.

And remember, this is GameFaqs that you are getting this info from. They don't tell the truth very often and many times the random posts are so they can feel good about themselves.

This is what makes this rumor stupid.

They are throwing away the original boxes and manuals only to replace them with similar sized generic boxes?

Yeah. Before they do this sort of thing they would get rid of the original xbox stuff to free up more room. I guess it would make sense to do that, so I guess they probably won't.

Besides, any one of the CAG insiders would have told this was coming... lots of EB / GS employees on here.

The EB / GS's here have some GBA games with the box / manual as well... 95% of them just get traded in cart only, is what my friends told me back in the day when I asked.

I am guessing they only need one replacement case for all copies of a game. So instead of having 5 cases for 5 copies of GTA:LCS, it will be one replacement case. They could also put all the portable games in a glass display case like they would do for GBA games

Thats why I posted the source, gamefaqs has mostly bogus posts however there are a few truthful ones out there.

I am guessing they are intending on putting the games in the gba display case where many of them are already in the stores here.

Either that or they will just have one display case for each game, with the name of the game written on it, then house all the used copies of each game in one place in the drawers in the back, and you won't get to take home the display case.

The information was apparently sent out in a corporate email.

If true, then this'll suck. I've used their B2G1 free sales for some great complete DS/PSP games. But I'm not surprised, they probably need the space.

Oh well, it's not that big of a deal if it's true. I don't buy stuff form them that much anyway.

I just can't see how this could be true. Why would they ditch the boxes on systems that are, what, 2 yrs old, yet continue to carry the cases of the gazillion $9.99 and less PS2 and XBOX games they have. Every Gamestop I have been to the DS and PSP systems at MOST, combined, take up 4 of the small racks. Meanwhile the original xbox, and xbox and PS2 9.99 and under games take up at least triple the space. It makes absolutely no sense to do it this way, when PSP and DS don't even take up that much room. Not to mention the fact that you are just placing the replacement cases back out there, which take up THE EXACT same amount of space.

Hm. Well, it definitely sucks for collectors, CAGs, and gamers who enjoy the finer things in life.

Even if this is true, Mommy and Daddy might still buy Billy games as cart or disc-only anyway if it's $5 cheaper. To them, a game is a game and if they save $5 over some pieces of paper it's considered a bonus.

True or not true, stop buying from gamestop/eb.

I've gone a few months without setting foot in their wretched stores and i'll never look back. Ebay gives better value for selling your games, and there's lots of other places to buy games cheaper. Nobody needs EB/GameStop, ever, for any reason. I say put them out of business.

I'll say it again what I've said before, I'll only go there if there is a sweet preorder deal or if I don't want to wait on shipping/stock issues. (I actually *have* had games I wanted sell out everywhere...) I've got about 2 games I'm going to be buying from em this year, Guitar Hero 2 on the 360 and Halo 3 Legendary. TBH, I wouldn't trade in to them ever again after finding this wonderful place.

I cannot guarantee its true but it seems pretty logical, look at the crap they pulled with the PS1 games without telling anyone, gutting all the games and shoving the discs into those cardboard shoe boxes where you couldn't even look at them because they were so packed in.

I don't think there are too many people here that work at ebgames or gamestop, the chain basically has everyone sworn to secrecy on policies and people could lose their jobs if they go around posting this info, thats probably why no one has jumped in to confirm it.

The only way it will be able to be confirmed is if we see them pulling the cases around April 1st.

I have had really good luck picking up DS games that were complete and had been hardly played from Gamestop (most games I bought were significantly cheaper than retail price and were complete with untouched manuals and paperwork), however if they are not offering me a good product I will shop elsewhere such as ebay and amazon, and the hundreds of other online retailers out there. I have also had games I wanted either have shipping problems and not make it to the stores until several weeks after release, if you can find it at all (hotel dusk), or sell out completely(nintendogs), then having their value on ebay skyrocket so preorders have come in handy quite a few times for me.

If you must preorder from them thats fine, just be sure to give a false phone number because they make automated phone calls to that phone number even after you buy the game telling you that you can trade the game in to get store credit.

They don't make much off new game sales, no more than any other retail store, so if you have to preorder for a bonus or because you think stock may be low on a certain title then do it, just don't fall for their tricks of trying to sell you an edge card, warrenties, or them trying to get you to trade in games. If they want to sell you an opened game as new, just refuse, make sure you tell them why you are not buying it. The only way they will stop doing it is if people get irritated at it and don't buy the opened games as new, which is by far the biggest complaint I hear about Gamestop.

The real business they get comes from customers who buy new or used games there, then trade them back to get measly amounts of store credit, not from people who snap up lower priced used games right after they price drop. Or from people who snap up new games right after price drops. Or from people who buy new games and then keep those games for their collection or keep them just to play without trading them in. Or those who trade online or sell on ebay.

Ummm... Did nobody read my post on the last page. I said if it wasn't announced until today in emails, it most likely wasn't happening. Well, I went through the emails tonight while I was at work and there wasn't anything there about it. I'm chalking this up as an April Fools. There is no need to get rid of the boxes for these games. I can see games that were traded in without the box/instructions not getting boxes to be kept in happening, but I can't see them getting rid of the boxes for stuff that is traded in. Those games tend to sell much faster than others for obvious reasons.

And for those of you wondering, I do work for Gamestop/EB Games.

This is untrue.

We've just recently received our spring relay (starting March 31st; for those of you that have GOOD GameStops/EBs, you will actually see the changes by then with signage, moving around categories, etc), and DS new and used stays on the wall, per usual. Of course, we can't stop customers from trading in their DS games without cases (which, 70% of the trade-ins so far are case-less, blame the kiddies), so if you do come in to pick up a used DS game and it's the only time you can find it locally, pick it up before someone else who doesn't care does.

Also, I personally wouldn't be surprised if later on down the line, once GB and GBC games are phased out, we start using the extra room in the glass cabinets as space for used DS games, again mainly because customers just are NOT willing to keep those damn cases and bring them in with the games. It's sad really.

I look there for deals and find them occasionally; I was standing in a Gamestop when they got their Wii shipment in in early February and couldn't pass it up. I also got a few games while there just because, but aside from that I hardly ever buy from them. Depending on your store they do have one of the best PC game sections though, if they have the space. I got Taito Legends new for $5.

Im obviously gonna bee the odd man out here but the gamestop that I go to is favorable than best buy circuit city ect. Mainly because I know the manager, there are gs and eb around me that are staffed by assholes but the one I go to is great, btw this whole thing sounds like it is not gonna happen, if anything is gonna change I think that DVD's or PC games would be the first to go.
First of all, why would any of you believe a damn thing posted at Gamefaqs.com?
thats what i keep wondering when i read the posts.

Went to 4 different stores yesterday, all of them say they never heard of anything like what the op states; then they commented on how stupid it sounded.
