Gamestop PS2 Trade In Advice

Sorry if this isn't the right forum, didn't see a perfect fit and need some advice. Just bought the new 80gb PS3 and don't know what to do with my PS2. The only games I still play on it are NCAA07 dynasty's and the GTA series. Gamestop is offering $20 for my system or a $40 store credit, but the $40 credit option expires today! I don't know how often Gamestop runs these promotions and if I should try to take advantage of it. If I trade in my system, memory cards, games, etc. I'll have about $60 which I could use to buy a new PS3 game. Any thoughts? Thanks dudes.

Don't ever trade anything at EB/Gamestop unless you're a minor and too ashamed of your hobby to ask your parents to help you with an ebay account. In the past they had deals that may have vaguely made trading worth it. Those days are gone and they are now glorified pawn shops.

If you want to be fleeced by the scummiest, most crooked scam in games retail, by all means "trade" at EB/GS. If not, go make an ebay/Goozex/CAG Trader Forums account.

ok so gamestop is pretty hated all around it seems. they do have the convenience factor going for them, but i know they rip you pretty hard. but how much more could i realistically get for a ps2 (not the slim version), 1 remote, ncaa07 football, vice city, san andreas, and 2 sony 8gb memory cards? if not much than $60 anyway, then i should probably just do it.

You wont get more than 2-3 bucks for the GTAs and they'll refuse NCAA since it's old. $20 credit is not gonna happen for those games and memory cards sadly.

If you are really hard up, take the $40 trade, otherwise I'd personally give it away to a younger cousin or friend for Christmas or something like that. You'd make their day and you wouldn't feel as bad for giving it away for pennies at GameStop.

they said $40 for the system, $8 for the memory cards, $6 for san andreas, $1 for vice city, and i have a few old sports titles that'll get me a buck or two, rounded it up to $60. don't have anyone i know that I think can use the system, so the question is, how much am i really going to play the old system now that i have ps3 (probably not much) and how much could i get on a craigslist, ebay, etc. where i have the deal with the hassle of posting, taking pictures and shipping. if it's not much more than $60...? but that's why i am posting here, b/c i really don't know. appreciate the time/advice for those that have posted with input so far. thanks.

i traded my ps2 to someone on here for a couple of games when i got my ps3, granted I didn't end up much better off than if i would have just sold it on ebay or to gamestop, but I certainly felt better trading it than promoting gamestop's used business or giving ebay/paypal a lot of fees.

that being said, 60 bucks for your fat ps2 really isn't that bad. You might get 80 on craigslist.

It is credit though, cash is so much better. Why not put it up on Craigslist for at least $80 and see if anyone bites? Personally, there are so many good games on the ps2 that I will have to always keep one. This is coming from a guy who has a 60GB ps3.

Yea- i think the standard trade-in value for a fat is 55 dollars. However, they've also got a promo going right now where you can get an extra 20 bucks for the system.

That gives you a net value of 75 bucks..

According to the manager at my Gamestop, the PS3 sales aren't what they would like, so they have been leaving the trade-in value for the PS2 high so that people will be inclined to trade in and get a PS3.

Don't mind the blind GS hatred that sometimes get spewed around here. It's one of the "cool things" to do on the internet. Rather than use their heads and realize there are times to deal with GS, when it is to your advantage, people just spout the same lame one-liners and crude names they saw people before them use. If you're ever looking for advice about GS, check out the weekly ad thread. The people there are a little less hostile about the big, bad corporation, maaaaaaaaan!

Are you sure about that trade-in value? $40 after promo certainly doesn't sound right. They sell refurbed units for $80. I'd say the base TIV would be about $30, giving you $50 if you traded it in today. Still not great, though. I don't know many people who would pay more for an old unit.

If you put everything on Craigslist, you more than likely will get more than you would from GS, and as others pointed out, you'd have cash in your hand, instead of GS credit.

Just spoke to a Gamestop rep over the phone to confirm, and it was $30 last month, but now it's $20. He couldn't say whether or not the $20 double promotion would be extended or not, but he doesn't blame me if i can get $80 cash over $60 gamestop credit.

Really? $55? My brother tried to trade one in and they were like "$40 [or 45] store credit, $30 cash". Do you mean as a trade-in toward the purchase of a PS3?

On topic: OP, I think Craigslist is worth a shot; and if that doesn't work out and you miss the $40 deal, something similar will probably come back again for the holidays.

The TIV for a fat PS2 is $20, plus the $20 bonus that ends today makes $40. I know, because I traded mine in last week to swap out for a slim model. Normally I wouldn't have done it for such a pittance, but my PS2 stopped playing CD games, and I want to be able to play my PS1 games and things like ICO that are CD media. Luckily, they didn't check the condition when I traded it in ;)

Well, thanks for clearing up the TIV on fat PS2 models. $20 is way too low.
