Gamestop Rant.

Well, we were driving around today and stopped at a shopping center about 45 miles away from home. I ran in to a gamestop and saw a copy of Boom Blox used for Wii, bought it, got back in the car, and we were on our merry way back home. I get home, look at the disc, it's scratched like crazy and the box is all bent out of shape. I open the case to take the stupid stickers off the cover. What do you know, the sticker on the spine is one of those ultra-sticky stickers that leaves all the residue behind. I spent 20 minutes trying to get it off and failed. So then I popped the disc in my Wii, got to play a few levels and then the cursor starts spazzing out. The cursor just completely jumped and went into ultra-slow-mo. I'm guessing this was because of the scratches? Well, make a long story short, I pretty much just lost all intention to play Boom Blox until I get it for $30 or under.

Plan on returning it tomorrow and never buying a used Wii game again from gamestop.

Thanks a lot gamestop.

So that's my angry rant, let's hear your stories!
To get rid of the residue in the future, just put some WD40 on it and scrub away.
thanks. The only used games I usually buy used from gamestop are DS games; since it's harder to screw up a game cart than a CD/DVD/Blu-Ray Disc.

Oh great another "Waaaaa Gamestop suxxorz Waaa" thread.

You think it's only Wii games???

I buy used games all the time from gamestop...whenever I buy them I make the clerk show me the disc before I pay for it...they usually get mad but I say "you guys check all of my disc before I trade them in" It's a useful way to not get burned

Ya need to learn your lesson about GS. ALWAYS check the game AND case before you leave the store. ALWAYS.

Yeah, I make the clerks show me the disc before I buy. If they don't do it then they are obviously trying to hide something and you shouldn't buy the game, 99% of clerks will oblige and show you the disk before you pay.

Every thought of looking at the condition of the disc. Also please stop with the "Waa Waa Gamestop is EVIL!" threads. No one cares. It's your fault anyway

You can try bringing the disc to a pawn shop/video store and have it resurfaced for about $2-$3.

Also: Shame on you for not having a bottle of Goo-gone in the house. Go to Walgreens and buy some ASAP.

Goo-gone?
Goo-gone?
my thoughts exactly.

explain what this is... it sounds useful.

and the "WAA GAMESTOP SUCKS" threads are much needed and provide entertainment for me.

As for checking the disc, it does say "guarenteed to work" on their damn ad's or whatever. Also, I never buy used disc products as I said before. In the past, I have only bought used DS/GBA products.

But whatever, I did get a like-new condition wavebird and a Gamecube to GBA cable (New marked used). So it wasn't a complete waste of a trip. Just a disappointment with Boom Blox.

Also, sorry for making "another one of these" threads, but I was just so surprised at how poor some of the trade-in's are and how they can actually put them on the sales floor.

Goo-gone's pretty cheap at like 2-3 dollars, if you can find it in a store in your area. It's probably better than the WD40, but if you can't find it, the 40's your diy tool.

Lighter fluid works pretty well too and usually doesn't leave behind that citrus-y/greasy smell that the Goo Gone does.

Oh and as others have said, Penguin1084, it is the CUSTOMER'S responsibility to check the condition of the game(s) they're buying before leaving the store. Hell, I stand there and nitpick over which copy out of 2-3 I have them bring out looks best. Even worse, the one time I was faced with 2 options for a game.

1. disc with tons of scratches(none deep, easily able to be resurfaced)
2. disc with some fingerprints and some smudges(easy to wipe off)

Thing is, I mentioned the smudges to the clerk on the otherwise mint/flawless disc. Guess what they did next?

They took the smudged disc and proceeded to use their shirt to try and rub off the smudges, thus making tons of tiny surface scratches.

Needless to say, I left with NOTHING that day.

you said the box was bent out of shape. When you bought it didn't you notice this? Also in the future you should ask GS to show you the disc before purchasing it.
you said the box was bent out of shape. When you bought it didn't you notice this? Also in the future you should ask GS to show you the disc before purchasing it.
well not like REALLY bent out of shape, but when I got a closer look, it looked like it was run over by a car or two.

And yea, now I know. And to everyone who said "OMG YOU NEVER CHECK DISCS?" I have bought a total of 3 used DISC games. Shadowrun/Bioshock during the 360 25% off sale and now Boom Blox. The damn signs say "Guarenteed to work" so being the stupid person I am, I assume the best.

Oh well...
I wouldn't think that scratches on the disc would cause the on-screen cursor to "lag".
the entire game was buggy and it seemed to be effecting my Wii.

Like I've said, this is the first used Wii game I have ever bought and it seems like I had the worst experience.

All I have to say is sample size.
Gamestop sells new games?
Fixed.

Although like everyone else said, while its ridiculous that they have such a poor conditioned game (they charge refurb fees to people who bring them in; but really never really do refurbish them), it was more or less your fault for not noticing these things before leaving the store.

If your username is 1084 because you were born in October 1984, I'd be shocked if this is your first game purchased used before.

With Gamestop, the sign should read 'Guaranteed to be scratched to hell and smell like feces or other indescribable substances'. And no, I do NOT routinely stick used games up to my nose to sniff them to determine the stench on them, since some have a malodorous smell that wafts up your nose even at arm's length.

Goo-gone = Win, easy to find and I am surprised that some know not of its name.

As others said, other products work fine too. This is the cheapest stuff though. And in a small bottle because you don't need a lot of it to take the residue off.

Either way, I see your point, its a pain to spend the extra $$ just to take sticker residue off.

And the "Gamestop sucks" threads are fun to read, I like people posting these. New CAG's can hopefully read and learn even though a lot of us veterans know about their horrible tactics already.

I was born in 03/84 and my first used game purchase came May of this year...

I don't care about what MikeHoncho say's- at all

Gamestop sucks ass. I don't do business with them- ever.

GS=in it for the money, They love charging that Refurb fee, the ones around here charge it on everything, mint to trash. I only buy Wavebirds and games from the summer sale there.
If your username is 1084 because you were born in October 1984, I'd be shocked if this is your first game purchased used before.
No, that's not when I was born. In the past, I NEVER bought used just because I didn't want to have an experience like I did with.

When I returned it, the assistant manager at my local gamestop said that the guy should have never even sold it to me and that I should "hunt him down".

lol...

Funny, I've never had a problem like this. I have never tried to buy a game there that was too scratched, and I've never had one smell bad. Maybe the smell you're noticing is coming from somewhere else...

Since no one's actually answered the question for those who asked yet... Goo-Gone is an adhesive remover. It's orange, comes in varied sizes, and it's easy to come by- drug stores, craft stores, places like that usually have it.

I just use lemon furniture polish myself... not that Goo Gone isn't great, I use it at work, but I can get the polish for a buck at a dollar store and be able to remove stickers (even from other stickers, like cart labels) and shine up the cases all at the same time.

Really? All GS' I go to say "guaranteed to work."

I certainly hope you mean it's coming from the store itself, since my personal hygiene is impeccable. If not and that was some personal barb thrown at me, oh well. So, I've pissed off another anonymous person on the internet, my life will go on.

On topic though, you can get Goo Gone here in small bottles at the Dollar Tree chain for $1.

The problem with Gamestop is that when someone brings in a disc that's scratched to hell, they simply charge them a "refurb fee" without actually refurbishing the discs.

Just make sure to check the discs before you leave the store. Who cares if it annoys the employees? You're a customer.

I also don't give a crap what you think about me. Look at the game disc before buying. I'd like you to point out a better retailer that isn't online and that knows what they are talking about unlike the tards at Target, Walmart, Circuit City, Best Buy, etc.. Maybe your gamestop has crap employees but the ones around me actually help me find things, get me the best copy, and tell me if a copy is scratched before I buy

Gamestop has and will always be ripping off trade ins

My friend's mom bought my friend a b-day gift. It was a used COD3 for 360 I think?
Well it ended up being an AOL disk. But they gave him an exchange.
It's used.Have they ever thought of looking at the disc since it wasn't sealed and notice it was a AOL disc?. Geniuses
Before I begin, you've sided heavily with Gamestop in other comments on this thread. I'm going to take your above comment and take it as you're slamming the lady who purchased the game as a gift and not the store. If this is incorrect, please disregard everything after:

Have you ever thought that the store selling it should actually CHECK what they're selling used to a patron?

If you bought a diamond ring and it turned out it was fake--- you'd be ticked off. Not EVERYONE is a diamond expert. Should the person walk around with a certified appraiser when buying a diamond?

While the box condition complaints are unacceptable and an INFORMED CAG (heck, person) should check the condition of the disc, your nuthuggery on just poor and deceitful business practices is sad. The CONSUMER should be protected enough to *ASSUME* the game they are purchasing is in proper working condition. The CONSUMER should be protected enough to *ASSUME* the game is the game they are actually being sold.

As a consumer, it is great to be informed, but there are also practices and laws that protect you from tomfoolery.
Ya need to learn your lesson about GS. ALWAYS check the game AND case before you leave the store. ALWAYS.
Exactly. ALWAYS check BEFORE the transaction is totaled. Scuffed up disc = no sale, although to be honest most times I don't make it to the register because the instuctions are gone. They only time I buy with no booklets is at a yardsale.

Yeah... you should check yourself... but you shouldn't ever be in a situation where you're buying an AOL disk from a Gamestop. That's just silly, and irresponsible on Gamestop's end.

Comparing video games to diamonds never works. Hopefully, OP learns his lesson and checks discs from now on. Quit expecting a large corporation to do the responsible thing.

Yeah, they check the game when it's traded in (sometimes), they take the disc out and put it in the drawer, and then they put it back in the case when someone buys it. If they aren't able to catch that it's an AOL disc somewhere in all that it's totally GameStop's fault. And I like the way MikeHoncho tries to spin it that GameStop having incompetent employees is somehow the fault of the consumer.

The analogy still works. The point is that a consumer is protected from a faulty sale. Comparing it to used ANYTHING else is silly or DVDs just as silly and then you have no analogy. Frankly, just because a CAG is an expert on games doesn't mean everyone is. Knocking the old lady going to the GAME STORE to buy a GAME for someone they know likes GAMES is perfect given that you go to a JEWELRY STORE to buy JEWELRY. The specialty store. It's Gamestop's "fault" their model is in re-used items and not new items.

The guy who got the AOL disc still got an exchange so is it that big of a deal? Gamestop made a mistake and actually tried to help the guy out. Most companies will see someone come back in the store and kick them out for trying to scam them. Would you replace the disc if they left the store and came back?

A good analogy would be a used car dealer. They sell lemons all the time and do they get in trouble for selling faulty products? No, the onus is on the buyer to actually test drive and check out the car themselves. Get a mechanic to look at it and make sure that the car is as advertised.

For the record, I don't like Gamestop anymore than anyone else here but I'm not going to demonize a corporation for acting like any other corporation in this country. Save your vitriol for the insurance and oil companies. Those corporations deserve to be demonized.
