$50 off for used $500 or $400 consoles? That's not news, that's a ripoff.
dude, its Gamestop what isn't a ripoff when it comes to selling or buying used gmaes?

Either way I am curious as to what kind of warranty they offer

LOL I agree with everyone else, this isn't a deal, not in the least. For another $50, I'd rather go with the system which has a year warranty from the manufacturer instead of having to buy an extra one from Gamestop.

Thumbs way down on this 'deal'. Good try though, OP.

That is, unless you count where these 'refurbs' are coming from. I wonder how well they 'refurb' the PS3's from Gamestop, since their PS2's and Xbox's typically were shittastic, just ask anyone who got in on the $50 coupon sale on the original Xbox how many they had to sift through before finding one that WORKED.

Typically, when Gamestop says they 'refurb' stuff, it usually means they slap their price stickers all over it in 20 layers and throw it into one of those snazzy generic boxes they have, even if people provide the original packaging for their systems.

Actually these are USED consoles. Gamestop refurbishes them to wipe the HDD clean because it is internal. There is no such thing as a USED PS3 just refurbished which are essentially USED ones.

Isn't that what I just said? Though, from what I've heard from numerous people now, they DO send them off supposedly to have the HDD wipe done. I certainly hope so, since I don't want someones crappy music or other garbage on a used system I'm buying.

one would be better off buying a new 60GB at Kmart/Sears. Just ask the associate to check in back for one. Thats how I got mine a couple of weeks ago:)

I know a couple of my local Kmarts have the 60gb still in stock, but I still can't pull the trigger @ $500. Now, if they were to somehow have them clearance priced in the system, but NOT marked and the price were the same as the Gamefunk ones, I'd probably hop on it in a second.

But, the chances of getting it PC'd to see if it's on clearance are slim to none, since the one clerk at the one store with one told me 'it's still $500' when I asked him to open the case and manually price check it. I can't blame him for not wanting to lug it out of the case and PC it though, since it's like 12-14 pounds, right?

You've got to pay tax on that $350/450, too. Let's assume that your tax rate is 7%. That's $24. So you're up to $373 for a used console, with only a 30 day "warranty" and 7 day return policy. Or you could get a new one from amazon (probably still with the Spiderman 3 BD) for $399 shipped. Hmm... Tough call.

I had to sift through six used xbox systems in-store last week, 2 had stuck dvd trays, one had a missing foot and the horrible thompson or phillips drive, one was way too old, one had a game in it with a drink stain on it, the one I chose was in good shape with 2005 manufacture date with the Samsung drive.

Why can't Gamestop employees check systems when they have down time, (especially stuck disc drives anyway) this way they could just send them for refurbishing, where the third party that does it can do a mostly crappy job with the repair:roll:

Are you 100% sure that GS wipes the HD? When I bought a used Xbox* over the summer, (before the coupon sadly, but still used half priced credit:cool:), the HDD was filled w/ music and 100+ game saves.

IF is now wiping HDs, then it's prolly a response to the pr0n-filled Memory Stick Dup they sold a while back:rofl:

*[I got very lucky when I got my Xbox. The first box the staff reluctantly opened, was a Halo edition with the good DVD drive:bouncy:]

Depending on what is most important to you, it could be a tough call. I WANT BC! I want my PS3 to upscale my PS2 games so they look good on my HDTV. My regular PS2 doesn't upscale and many games don't support progressive scan so they look like GARBAGE. I paid $$ at K-Mart for a new 60GB when I could get the 80GB with a game for the same price (60Gb has the best BC since it is hardware based). I'm the consumer Sony doesn't like. I use my PS3 right now primarily as a PS2 for my HDTV. Worlds apart and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I was referring the OP's $349 for the 40 gig PS3. I agree that BC is important to some people, but none of the models he *originally* posted about (the 40 and 80) have the full BC of the 20 or 60.

I bought a 20GB PS3 refurb from GS about a year ago and it was behaving funny so they let me exchange it for another refurb. The new one has been working fine ever since. In my estimation, the problems you'll have with a refurb PS3 are likely to show themselves within 30 days so it's not as bad of a gamble as everyone here is making it out to be. Obviously, if you have the money to spend on a new unit with BC than do it, but I don't think it's necessarily a bad decision to by a refurb. Just play the heck out of it for that first month to make sure no problems arise. Anyway, I don't know where you guys live but I haven't seen a 60GB new in the wild for at least six months.
I think this is a good deal, if for the conplete BC alone.

exactly.

for less than $30 more you get a brand new one from amazon with 1 year warranty and free shipping... boggles my mind who would pay $373 for a used system and 30 day warranty

See my post above sbout BC. Hardware based is the best option. Also, you get a bigger hard drive (60 GB anyway), more USB ports, etc. Spider-Man 3 sucked so the fact it comes with a free movie isn't a selling point for me. I wouldn't by a refurb for other reasons, but I can understand why people would want a refurbed 60GB model or 20 GB model since they have hardware BC built in.

The 20GB would be an ok deal, if it was $329.99 or less. They say the old price on it was $379.99 but that's the price for a new 20GB from EB/GS.

Also, if you get the 20GB you can upgrade to a much larger HD for ~$50 on geeks.com. I got a 100GB for $40 a while back.
