First post contains promo information & useful information and frequently asked questions. The second post is blank currently but is there for expansion or to revert back to the way things were. Third post has the 360/Wii/PS3 values. Fourth post has the PS2/GC values. Fifth post has DS/PSP values. Sixth post has hardware/accessory values for all systems.

These trade-in values are really low!
While that may be true, if you combine the games with the right promotion they can work to your advantage. There are knowledgeable people in this thread that are normally willing to help.

Is there any way to look at what the previous values reported on a game?
You can search through this thread and previous ones to see what a game has been reported in the past. With the TIV Tracker you can sort by date and then go through the list of past updated values through that as well. Here are the previous GS TIV Threads: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13

Can I trade-in sealed games?
No. You might come across the rare GameStop that would let you do it, but they are going to open them anyway.


I don't want to get hassled about the values I post, how can I get the information out there?
If you do not feel comfortable or willing to put the values in the thread you have two options available. You can input them in the TIV tracker or you can send them to me via PM. Either way the database and these lists will be updated. Putting them into the TIV tracker does save me some time later on.

Do trade-ins have to have their original case, insert and manual?
No, however it will be YMMV on if they charge you a refurbish fee for them in that condition. Most GameStops wont charge a fee but there are some that charge for incomplete games.

Will they accept my game if it is really beat up?
YMMV. It really all depends upon the employee you get. Some will charge refurbish fees, some wont, some wont accept the game and others just take them without a second glance.

What are the refurb fees on games?
There appears to be set prices for set value ranges. We aren't 100% certain on the splits just yet. Here is what we have currently:
$0.25-$2 Value:
$0.75 Refurb Fee
$2.01-$4 Value: $1 Refurb Fee
$4.01-$7 Value: $2 Refurb Fee
$7.01-$10 Value: $3 Refurb Fee
$10.01 & Higher Value: $4 Refurb Fee
This information isn't guaranteed by any mean and we are still working on nailing it down.

What are the refurb fees on consoles?
They are listed in the hardware TIV section, highlight in red.


I have a Collector's/Limited/Special edition of a game, do I have to trade-in all of the extras?
No, but there are a handful of games that their variations have separate listings at GameStop: Madden 09 Anniversary Edition, Battlefield: Bad Company Gold Edition, and a few others.

Why didn't the percent bonus go for my accessory for a system that was included?
Unless stated otherwise, and they are rarely included, the bonuses never apply to accessories. Except the EDGE card of course.

I traded in a bunch of games for the "Trade X, get $X bonus" promo and it gave me the percentage bonus instead?
I can't give concretes on why this happens. GameStop computers are normally pretty good at giving you the better promo. In the case of a percentage bonus being run at the same time as a "Trade X, get $X" promo, things can get messy. The system appears to only give one promo on games per transaction so if you had a few games that you want to go to the percentage bonus and a stack for the "Trade X, Get $X" it will regularly apply the percentage to all of the games. Your best bet is to do all "Trade X, Get $X" games in one transaction on their own. The GameStop clerk may say that the system will figure it all out, tell them you want a separate transaction anyway. As always, check your receipt before you leave the store.


Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
YMMV. The official policy is no, but there are some GameStops that overlook that rule.

What all do I have to trade in for a console trade-in?
Xbox 360: Console Unit, power brick, A/V Cables, Controller (wired/wireless)
Wii: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cables, Wiimote, Nunchuck, Sensor Bar
Playstation 3: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller, USB Cable
Playstation 2: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller (Must be a DualShock2)

Can I trade in a defective/broken console?
For the most part yes. If it powers on but doesn't play games, they will take the console as a refurb unit and put a refurb fee on the console. The refurb fee on the console will vary on the price of the console so those numbers will change. You are still required to trade in everything required listed in the question directly above. They will not, however, take RROD 360 consoles. There may be stores that still do it, but official policy is to not take them in.

What is the difference between PowerUp Rewards and PowerUp Rewards Pro?
The basic card is free and only allows you to acrew points when spending money. The Pro card costs $14.99 and is basically the same as the previous EDGE program.

How much does a PowerUp Rewards Pro subscription cost?
It costs $14.99 and is good for a year. It also comes with a 1-year subscription to Game Informer magazine.

What bonuses come with having an PowerUp Rewards Pro card?
You will get an extra 10% trade-in credit on the base value of the game, extra 10% off the purchase of pre-owned games and 10% off new strategy guides.

Does the Power Up Rewards Card give me a bonus on hardware trade-ins?
No. You will only get the bonus for games and accessories.

What if I want cash instead of credit, what do they deduct?
If you decide that you want cash instead of credit, they will take 20% off the base values and promos will not apply.

Does promo "....." have a minimum trade-in value?
If the promo has a minimum trade-in value requirement, it will be listed in the promo. If it isn't there, then there is no limit. However, as with all trades, they are subject to manager approval so the manager could have setup his own little rule-set requiring a minimum of whatever.

I used a Power Trade promo for a pre-order, can I cancel that pre-order and get the credit or move it to another game I want?
Yes on both accounts. However, if you do a bunch of the power trades and just straight drop the pre-order you could create some ill-will between yourself and the employees you cancel on. However, if you look at the wordings on promos, they can remove the bonus trade-in value if they decide to.

I just tried to use a promo that has a select list of games eligible, but they say my game isn't eligible anymore, what gives?
Basically they have the right to change the eligible games at any time. They tend to update these frequently so as to lock out any easy/cheap games. It's best to check the eligible list the day of your trade.

Can I stack two different trade-in promos?
No. The only thing that will stack with trade-ins is your EDGE card. Some will report success, but this requires a manual override and is very YMMV.

If I pay for an item using all credit on my card, do I have to pay sales tax?
This varies depending upon the state you live in.

My state doesn't charge sales tax on purchases made by credit, why is gamestop.com charging me tax?
It is just the way they have designed their system. The best theory we have seen is that since you are only inputting the number off of the back of the card, it isn't going to pick up the programming from the specially tagged EDGE cards. Some kind of programming that gets input from their system that wont show up when only inputting the number off the back of the card.

That's a totally different promotion. It's a coupon that starts on July 1 for any trade in. The 40% bonus that's been talked about here is the one towards E3 titles only and is a different promo.

They are lying too you, once the trade is complete the credit is yours. You can transfer or cancel a preorder. I do it all the time.

If you look at the wording of a lot of these promos they are allowed to take away the bonus credit. It isn't automatic by the computer though. The employee would have to manually remove the bonus credit. It has been reported done in the past.

If that was reported, then was someone was actually abused. The reality is GS has no corporate rules against transferring or canceling any preorder. I suspect they would actually get into trouble with the local pawn laws if they reduced the actual value after the trade was complete.

If all else fails however, you take possession of the game, ask for a gift receipt, and then return it to another store. 9/10 because they cannot connect the game back to the actual purchase method, and they will give you cash back. I've on occasion had to specifically refuse cash, and asked them to give me a gift card. I do this to keep my GS monies from being wasted on non gaming stuff :)

The only issues I've run into with that is if I trade in more stuff than the pre-order is worth. Even if I pay the pre-order in full, they strongly, STRONGLY urge me to burn the other credit on something while I'm there.

I guess there's no policy against me saying no but... I usually cave and just pick up a PSN card or something. Transferring credit onto another pre-order or removing it to use on a purchase I've done multiple times just fine (on another day or another store though).

man, I traded in a bunch of stuff 2 days ago (that amounted to a little over 200 bucks) not realizing that you could do the thing where you just put 5 bucks towards the game. I don't mind buying the game, but I thought that only the credit applied to the games would get increased. I'm an idiot.

Is there any way that GS can retroactively add that bonus? My guess is that they theoretically could, but it would be a massive YMMV, and not something that actually can be done.
 
If you didn't get the bonus when you traded the stuff in (because you thought the games weren't eligible and subsequently didn't put them toward a qualifying title), I don't think there's any chance you'll get the bonus after the fact. Trades are final, from all my experiences.

Yeah, I mean, the only reason I thought it might be something that would work would be the fact that GS really wants people to lock in pre-orders, so they might "fudge" the rules on that in order to get the pre-order.

Anyway, I have a different question now! I called that store just to see and the guy said that you have to apply all of the credit towards the eligible pre-order games. I explained that just tonight I had applied 5 bucks towards a game and received the full extra 40% bonus (plus 10% for PUR) on my order. He then said that I did not actually do that, and I said, "well OK, it doesn't matter then" and then he said that their store manager has a policy that all the credit has to go toward the games you are pre-ordering.

So... my question is which is correct? This -- to me -- sounds like a case of a store clerk going rambo and making up rules to "protect his store" -- can a store manager do that?

No, what they said is technically correct. There's many ways to get around that though, but it may require coming back on another day.

1. You trade in more than the pre-order costs in total. Say you trade in $100, and the game costs $60. You can use the extra $40 right there in the store on something else.

2. Most likely you can just do this. To go another store or come back another day and cancel the pre-order, the credit will be put back onto your account. At that point you can use it on anything you want.

Thanks man! Sounds like I will have to sometimes to the trickier way. It just sounds like, to me, for some reason CSRs in St. Louis at pretty much every store are all about trying to block these kinds of deals. At least I know of one store that does it the "portion not all" way, so that is good. Just wish I had known about this last night. I'd pretty much have a free skyrim already :)
 
You are supposed to put all the tiv toward the pre-order. That is how the promotion is worded. It is ymmv if the store actually does this. Most stores will happily take just $5 toward one of the e3 titles and let you do as you please with the rest of the credit.

For people who are having problems getting the promo to work at their gamestop. The deal is not done automatically in the system. They have a "Marketing Manuel" or "Marketing Guide" for this week and there is a barcode in there they have to scan.

I was at Gamestop yesterday and I was the first person to try and use the promo so the guy wasn't sure how to do it. He called the district supervisor and so I watched what he was doing. So I'd just say for anyone who is having bad luck tell them the gamestop employee to check their marketing manual or whatever it is called (someone can correct me if they know the name) for this week.

This is true. I traded in 4 games today and saw on the receipt that I only got 10% on each game. I went back and asked them if there was a mistake. I was sure that Skyward Sword was on the list. So, I looked at the handout that had and looked it up. The manager finally told the worker that she had to scan the promo manually.

I didn't mean for the manager to lecture her saying "I told you guys to leave this out because you have to do it manually". Maybe I'll fill out the survey to help her.

Me too. I've been on CAG for a year now and I'm surprised it's taken this long to see some craziness like this. Closest thing was the whole Clown Porn craze which admittedly was awesome.

I don't see why GS would give you cash for a gift receipt, don't they usually only give store credit, i.e. gift cards for gift receipts? This is for almost all retail stores that I can think of.

This is actually the safest method, rather than trying to argue about transferring the credit, and having the manager possibly tell you he will take away trade in value (even if it is possibly illegal)

LA Noire PS3 dropped to $24

Pretty happy with the prices. Traded in Smash Bros + Mario Wii and put it towards Uncharted 3. After 40% bonus + 10% PUR it came out to $70.50 for just those 2 games.

Decided to preorder Skyrim and Saints Row also and she gave me a free copy of Game Informer since a $10 off coupon I had wouldn't work on it. was too stupid to try to apply it to the pre-orders lol didn't think about it until after the fact. It says it works on in stock items only though so probably wouldnt have worked. Anyway sweeet deal.

Decided to preorder Skyrim and Saints Row also and she gave me a free copy of Game Informer since a $10 off coupon I had wouldn't work on it. was too stupid to try to apply it to the pre-orders lol didn't think about it until after the fact. edit: I wonder if the wrong date can mess with the cookies on your computer and slow it down somehow? I fixed the date and suddenly the site is running much faster. Was wondering why the hell it was loading so slow. Maybe just a coincidence but thanks anyway.

I paid off Uncharted 3 also via the Dragon Age 2 and shift 2 deal at Bestbuy with the @gamer coupons. If you got BB gc to burn you can use it on the other titles on the list that you want.

It's a core + controllers + HD.

In other words, $30 for the system (w/ 1 controller, cables, etc), $7 for a second controller,
 
I'm so pissed. My shipment from the last day of B2G1 came today.

Two games had no artwork or manuals and had black cases. What in the fuck.
