FAQ
These trade-in values are really low!
While that may be true, if you combine the games with the right promotion they can work to your advantage. There are knowledgeable people in this thread that are normally willing to help.

Is there any way to look at what the previous values reported on a game?
You can search through this thread and previous ones to see what a game has been reported in the past. With the TIV Tracker you can sort by date and then go through the list of past updated values through that as well. Here are the previous GS TIV Threads: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.

Can I trade-in sealed games?
No. You might come across the rare GameStop that would let you do it, but they are going to open them anyway.

Do trade-ins have to have their original case, insert and manual?
No, however it will be YMMV on if they charge you a refurbish fee for them in that condition. Most GameStops wont charge a fee but there are some that charge for incomplete games.

Will they accept my game if it is really beat up?
YMMV. It really all depends upon the employee you get. Some will charge refurbish fees, some wont, some wont accept the game and others just take them without a second glance.

What are the refurb fees on games?
There appears to be set prices for set value ranges. We aren't 100% certain on the splits just yet. Here is what we have currently:
$0.25-$2 Value:
$0.75 Refurb Fee
$2.01-$4 Value: $1 Refurb Fee
$4.01-$7 Value: $2 Refurb Fee
$7.01-$10 Value: $3 Refurb Fee
$10.01 & Higher Value: $4 Refurb Fee
This information isn't guaranteed by any mean and we are still working on nailing it down.

I have a Collector's/Limited/Special edition of a game, do I have to trade-in all of the extras?
No, but there are a handful of games that their variations have separate listings at GameStop: Madden 09 Anniversary Edition, Battlefield: Bad Company Gold Edition, and a few others.

Why didn't the percent bonus go for my accessory for a system that was included?
Unless stated otherwise, and they are rarely included, the bonuses never apply to accessories. Except the EDGE card of course.

I traded in a bunch of games for the "Trade X, get $X bonus" promo and it gave me the percentage bonus instead?
I can't give concretes on why this happens. GameStop computers are normally pretty good at giving you the better promo. In the case of a percentage bonus being run at the same time as a "Trade X, get $X" promo, things can get messy. The system appears to only give one promo on games per transaction so if you had a few games that you want to go to the percentage bonus and a stack for the "Trade X, Get $X" it will regularly apply the percentage to all of the games. Your best bet is to do all "Trade X, Get $X" games in one transaction on their own. The GameStop clerk may say that the system will figure it all out, tell them you want a separate transaction anyway. As always, check your receipt before you leave the store.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
YMMV. The official policy is no, but there are some GameStops that overlook that rule.

What all do I have to trade in for a console trade-in?
Xbox 360: Console Unit, power brick, A/V Cables, Controller (wired/wireless)
Wii: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cables, Wiimote, Nunchuck, Sensor Bar
Playstation 3: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller, USB Cable
Playstation 2: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller (Must be a DualShock2)
GameCube: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller
PSP: Handheld, A/C Adapter
Nintendo DS/DSLite/DSi: Handheld, A/C Adapter, Stylus

Can I trade in a defective/broken console?
For the most part yes. If it powers on but doesn't play games, they will take the console as a refurb unit and put a refurb fee on the console. The refurb fee on the console will vary on the price of the console so those numbers will change. You are still required to trade in everything required listed in the question directly above. They will not, however, take RROD 360 consoles. There may be stores that still do it, but official policy is to not take them in.

How much does an EDGE card subscription cost?
It costs $14.99 and is good for a year. It also comes with a 1-year subscription to Game Informer magazine.

What bonuses come with having an EDGE card?
You will get an extra 10% trade-in credit on the base value of the game and an extra 10% off the purchase of used games.

Does the EDGE Card give me a bonus on hardware trade-ins?
No. You will only get the bonus for games and accessories.

What if I want cash instead of credit, what do they deduct?
If you decide that you want cash instead of credit, they will take 20% off the base values and promos will not apply.

Does promo "....." have a minimum trade-in value?
If the promo has a minimum trade-in value requirement, it will be listed in the promo. If it isn't there, then there is no limit. However, as with all trades, they are subject to manager approval so the manager could have setup his own little rule-set requiring a minimum of whatever.

I used a Power Trade promo for a pre-order, can I cancel that pre-order and get the credit or move it to another game I want?
Yes on both accounts. However, if you do a bunch of the power trades and just straight drop the pre-order you could create some ill-will between yourself and the employees you cancel on.

I just tried to use a promo that has a select list of games eligible, but they say my game isn't eligible anymore, what gives?
Basically they have the right to change the eligible games at any time. They tend to update these frequently so as to lock out any easy/cheap games. It's best to check the eligible list the day of your trade.

Can I stack two different trade-in promos?
No. The only thing that will stack with trade-ins is your EDGE card.

If I pay for an item using all credit on my card, do I have to pay sales tax?
This varies depending upon the state you live in.

What states charge sales tax on purchases paid in full with credit and which ones don't?
Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Florida, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, West Virginia
Does Not Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases: Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming
No Information Yet: Connecticut, Idaho, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, Rhode Island, South Dakota

My state doesn't charge sales tax on purchases made by credit, why is gamestop.com charging me tax?
It is just the way they have designed their system. The best theory we have seen is that since you are only inputting the number off of the back of the card, it isn't going to pick up the programming from the specially tagged EDGE cards. Some kind of programming that gets input from their system that wont show up when only inputting the number off the back of the card.

First post contains promo information and the FAQ. Second post has the 360/Wii/PS3 values. Third post has the PS2/GC values. Fourth post has DS/PSP/GBA values.

Well I told myself if I could round up $200 worth of games to trade in that I would bite on the new 360 even though logically I have no good reason to upgrade I literally took in everything I was willing to part with and only came up with $115 bucks so honestly I think thats probably a good thing, now I have some credit for the hopeful B2G1 sale this summer, because seriously those things used to be like every three weeks last year I feel like I haven't seen one since Thanksgiving, at least GS.com has been pretty decent.

No....you don't get to get my hopes up like this :p . Granted, the guy I talked to at GS today wasn't my friend but he was very forthcoming about no upgrade deal having been supplied yet through the GS newsletter for the workers.

Besides, that deal doesn't make any sense. The price WAS 80 (before the then 50, and now 25 dollar bonus) and is now 60.

So explain to me how this would work, how they would suddenly give the price a mega boost in the form of 100 bucks?

I would be very curious to know how your friend knows about this possibility, or if he's just talking out of his but :p .

Dude, he called me over here at my store to let me know. That's the best I can give you right now. I gain nothing by making this shit up. I'm not going to piss people off by telling everyone a lie.

I haven't heard anything from my normal sources yet but they may still be at work. Sounds legit enough though.

not sure if its worth dropping $150/$200 for a new xbox when mine works fine, are there any other decent deals out there? i have an xbox from '07 and wouldn't mind trading up now that i have a little extra cash, provided the price isn't too steep

Dude is coming over here in the next 5-10 minutes with a copy of the e-mail. I'll let you guys know more when I get it.

Better deliver. :applause::bomb:

Got this from one of my regular sources: "They will be doing a $100 tiv on 360's if it is toward a slim. Have not heard much else. kinect is available to pre-order in stores but the 360 slims are not."

Thanks JP.

Question about the whole broken/refurb fees/tiv.

My GF has a 360 that doesn't red ring, but the disc drive is bad. Do they test that? I forget if it grinds or does anything.

If the value is 50, does that mean it is 5 after the refurb? Also, why is there more fees on a wireless over the wired?

Thanks for any clarification. If the trade-in gets confirmed I have one good and one bad 360 to trade.

Oh, so you work at a GS as well?

But yeah, I guess if it just got circulated today, and your friend is privy to see such an email before other workers, this could indeed be legit.

It still seems a bit too nice a deal in my mind though (not too nice for us of course :p ). Even the guy I talked to said that IF such a deal was offered, it likely would be very similar/ no better than the 25 dollar bonus they already have (and this very much is).

Anyway, like others I will be waiting with baited breath for you update us with this email info. I will especially be curious how long the offer will last (since my original plan after finding out I waited past the price drop was to wait a bit and see if they were going to do more as far as bundling the unit).

Oh, and so you think this deal is basically the core unit plus wireless controller? So adding in the HD would sweeten the pot even moreso?

Most GameStops will run a game to test the console. The refurb fees may go down now with the lower console value. Can't say for certain. More value, higher refurb fee whether they actually need it or not.

Because it's not a simple trade in for credit. You are trading in an old Xbox and in return spending $300 in their store (or $200 after credit).

I have the e-mail. Here's the deal:

The deal is good for a console with either a wired OR wireless controller. Also, it appears that accessories are being bumped up in value for trading towards a Slim. The values are as follows:

20 GB HDD - $30
60 GB HDD - $35
120 GB HDD - $40
250 GB HDD - $45
64MB Card - $10
256MB Card - $14
512MB Card - $18
Wireless G Adaptor - $40
Wireless N Adaptor DISC REQUIRED - $50
Wired Controller - $20
Wireless Controller - $25

Promo begins on Thursday and could last as long as three weeks. However, there is no expiration liated in the e-mail.

There you guys go.
Will they accept 2 consoles for the slim?
If past promos like this are any indication, then no on automatic. YMMV are getting an over-ride. Some people would do return and trade again but that's a lot of work. Wont know for certain until we have people try it.

This sounds way too good. But gravy if true.

Base TIVS for 6/15/10

360
GRAW2 - $3
Spider-man Web of Shadows - $5
Sonic the Hedgehog - $2.50
Wall-E - $3

Wii
Wii Sports - $4.75
Wii Sports Resort (game only)- $7.25

I won't be putting these values in the TIV lists cause I can almost guarantee that those aren't base bumps but promo values that wont show up until the Total button is pressed. If shown otherwise I will make those changes.

This is correct. The TIVs listed in the e-mail state that they are only honored when traded for the Slim.

Sorry for the new post, but I have just seen in the e-mail that for those who want to transfer hard drives when they get their new Slim, GameStop will honor the promo HDD trade-in price within seven days of your Slim purchase. You will need to hang on to your receipt for that.
100 only damn wish it was 150
LOL you really think that GS would allow you to trade in a console for the price of a brand new one?

What e-mail are you all referring too? The only one I recived today was, "Up to 20% off select titles". If this e-mail is true, I'll be picking up a new slim for sure. Must of not hit main stream yet though.

Let me clear something up. I received this e-mail from a friend who works over across the hall from me at GameStop in the mall we work in. He was kind enough to print a copy off to let me see.

Now, I would imagine that this e-mail should be making its way around between now and Thursday. I'm not sure. I couldn't see how a promo like this would be YMMV, though.

Hm..so I have two xbox 360s..one i can go ahead and trade it for the $60(+$25 bonus). Then come back and trade in the other xbox for the $100 towards the 360 slim and my 120 gb hard drive for another $40 making that $225. Meaning I'd only have to pay $75 out of pocket for it. Problem is my xbox is in perfect shape and there's no issues with it plus I'm not sure how I would transfer my data? Don't they have kits that can transfer data to your computer? Anyone know?

Oh Baby, if those promo TIV's hold true, then I may have to trade in the replacement unit that MS sent me from when my original Pro died (this past Dec.). Between the unit and a couple access., I should get about $173 towards the new unit.

The only problem I'll have is with transferring the licenses. I picked up an ELITE when BB gave the giftcard and transferred the licenses in January. Picked up the ELITE since I figured the refurb unit I would get back wouldn't hold up very well.

Has MS changed the 12 month wait to transfer licenses now that they're releasing the new unit?

If they haven't, then the new unit is going to become the back-up until next year.

No kit to transfer to your computer.

wait so accessories also get edge bonus right?

i just sent out my 360 to be repaired because of e74 for the first time (after having it for 2 and a half years) and i would love to upgrade. i got a 20gb hdd and a spare controllers so i can get $100(console)+$25(controller)+$30(HDD)=$155 and a possible $5.50 in EDGE?

damn decisions

If I had to transfer my licenses already within the past 8 months but sent an email to MS telling them I plan to buy a slim, do you think it would be at all possible they'd allow another license transferral in under a year's time? I really want to cash in on this.
No kit to transfer to your computer.
I feel like an idiot because I totally forgot about the USB drives! duh!

So , is it $100 for a Xbox 360 AND Wireless Controller and a extra $30 for a 20GB HD ? If so , then that's not an amazing deal considering 2 months ago you could have got $130+ and not TOWARDS a system.

ok, so I have a few questions. First off thanks for posting the email details! However, I'm a little confused. All you posted were the (bumped up apparently?) accessory prices?

So the deal is 100 bucks if and only if it's toward a slim (which I guess another user explained relatively well why they are able to do that kind of extra deal, since they know you will give them more money immediately, so I suppose it sounds more kosher), so, say, those controller prices is assuming you have more than one to trade or something? And from the sound of it it's 100 bucks core console and controller regardeless if it's wired or wireless?

Secondly, that's VERY cool about the hard drive deal, since I had been pondering that (and the guy I called at GS basically said I was SOL about wanting to get the data off first but still use the HD as credit toward my purchase....minus of course using a USB thumbdrive, but I dont have one big enough).

Yeah I wish their was a way to just get the credit. Unless I dropped the money to get a slim then returned it for credit. I guess Ill just keep mine.

can you put stuff on a usb drive then put it on the cpu, buy the new 360 and put the shit from the cpu back not he usb drive and then finally back on the new harddrive?

Questions answered here:

Again, the console with a wired OR wireless controller nets you $100 credit towards a Slim. The accessory TIVs I listed are ONLY honored when you trade them in during your Slim transaction.

For example, I have a 360 and two wireless controllers, the first wireless adaptor and a 120 GB HDD. I'll get $100 for the console and one of the controllers, $25 for the other controller, $40 for the HDD, and $40 for the network adaptor for a grand total of $205 credit.

Hope that straightens everything out.

I think it's YMMV as far as how much the particular employee cares. I've never seen anyone run a game, only boot the console, so if it's got a broken disc drive...that's a pretty good why you shouldn't be buying consoles there.

It does mostly thanks, I was just nervouse since the one detail you left out on the email post was the 100 dollar thing :p .

Well that's a bummer that as opposed to past deals I dont get a little extra for my one and only controller being wireless :p.

My only other confusion is about the hard drive deal. I assume that they will give you the bumped up value, but you WONT be able to use it as a credit to your slim purchase, since you will have to come in after you have trasnferred the data. If so that bums me out, it means I will have to find someone to lend me a bigger USB thumbdrive at least :p (heck at this point I'm afraid to turn my xbox on, at risk that it might choose this week to break, haha).

My only other concerns I guess is how much are shipping to my nearby stores and how long the deal will go for.

Also, I assume these "refurb fees" that people are discussing won't apply to the upgrade deal, right?

So I think I might bite, but I have a few questions first. Can I use store credit towards the slim transaction? I ask because I'm thinking I'll trade in FFXIII for $25 store credit, then my DS Lite for $40 + $25 (hardware bonus promo), and finally my xbox and controller ($100), an additional wireless controller ($25), and my 20 gb drive ($30), for a total of $245.

I realize this probably falls under "cannot be combined with any other offer," but I have to ask the dumb noob question: Will this work? I am fully willing to drive to three different GameStops if need be.
