Gamestop's "New" Games

Does anyone else have this problem? Every single time I buy a "new" game from gamestop the shrink wrap has been removed and it has been plastered with stickers all over the casing and the security seals have been broken. I mean the dlc vouchers have always worked and stuff, but it's really annoying and I just can't stand having sticker goo all over my cases.

Nope. You're the only one. None of us here have ever heard of this practice. Tell me more.
Nope. You're the only one. None of us here have ever heard of this practice. Tell me more.
Cool so it's everywhere and not just my local store. Is there any reason why they do this?

Don't mind the jerk. Gutting games has pretty much been around for a while now. They do that to use them for display and prevent theft, but at the same time it's annoying since the games aren't technically "new" anymore.

You've just opened a big can of worms about gamestop's policy in regards to opening up games. I'm surprised a veteran like yourself isn't used to it by now...

They open atleast one game so they can use the case as a display instead of doing like most stores are doing now like best buy & walmart and putting them in jailbreak cases. the website can't even be trusted for looking @ inventory for NEW games because almost 90% of the time the new game is the last copy and it's already been opened.

here's how i see it. if the shrink wrap has been torn off a game and the factory seal is broken the game is NOT new i don't care what a stupid gamestop employee has to say. Why pay full retail when you can get it elsewhere either the same price or cheaper.

I don't do business at gamestop anymore unless it's a really really good sale like a power sale otherwise my used business goes to either amazon or gazelle and i purchase my new games thru amazon

ugh i had this problem today when I went to pick up my copy of phantom brave for the wii. I went up to the counter to ask if they had any new sealed copies and the stupid chick working was looking at me like i'm an idiot saying 'that is a new copy'. I asked her again if she had a SEALED copy (emphasis on sealed) and she totally gave me BS attitude.

ugh needless to say I won't be going back to that gamestop w/ that kind of crap customer service. /end rant.

Go back in with a dictionary, ask if she's literate, then show her the definitions of new and sealed.

If you don't like it, don't shop there. It's simple. No amount of complaining to the store or on an Internet forum will change this. Ever. It's been discussed so many times, some of us don't care to hear the same old stuff. I came here to have fun. I knew what to expect when I opened the thread. The OP should have too.

Also, in before ninja dog.

Sometimes, you're lucky. You ask for a game, and they might give you an actual new copy. It happened to me recently with Muramasa.

Yeah, I won't buy a new car that has 5 miles on it from test drives and moving it around the lot. It has been sat in and driven so it's not new. Therefore they should knock it down 20grand to the used car price. don't like it, don't shop there.

I agree with what you're saying, but I want to point something out: there's a difference between someone test driving a car, and Gamestop employees test driving your game.

That's a really good argument and that's why it's not stupid.

I was mainly just wondering if it was only my local Gamestop or the entire chain there were only mild complaints about the sticker goo. In fact I think that I mentioned I never had missing dlc or anything so it wasn't a big deal. Also I don't mind you being rude I'm used to it but why even bother opening a topic if you "know what to expect" before opening it. Sounds like someone wants attention and to be internet cool. Thanks for the answers guys.

It actually is stupid Cars=apples video games=oranges. They are not the same and should not be compared to at all.

Sweet. I'm Internet cool now.

Anyway, I buy plenty of games from gamestop and I can't remember the last time I got a gutted copy of a new game. I guess the gamestop I frequent is just better than the rest.

The only way this comparison would make sense if its commonplace to buy new cars with 0 miles, which it obviously isn't.

Anyways, @OP, if you don't like it, then go to another store. I don't like it either, but that's why I take my business to another store when all GS have to offer me is an opened new copy.

Why do you think they call their used games "pre-owned"? If they called it used, 3/4 of the store would be in there. :bouncy:

The reason GS (and this topic) get beat up so much is because they are the only store, heck the only retailer, that does anything like this.

See if GS corporate were intelligent, they would take care of this. Do you ever see all those boxes they use for a pre-order? I don't need 10 boxes of Madden 11 for 360 to tell me its coming soon.

Their internal policy should be to keep 1 "junk" box of every game they have a sealed copy of until they sell out. And don't give me the bullshit about not having room. If the empty box is sitting on the floor, who cares. If they too much old shit, then send it back to corporate.

You know what somebody with balls should do? Buy a "new" game that is gutted, and try returning it in a week for a refund. I wonder what they would say...

I am fine if they want to try out the games, but I do have a major problem when there are fucking idiots in the store trying out those games with no common sense.

Example: some jackass employee tried out a copy Bad Company 2 I bought and used the multiplayer code which made my game invalid. So I had to return said game in rage.

most all of those games that have been opened and sold as new have been in some employees stinky apartment and he used it to clean up his spilled bong water and ass sweat.

No matter what those guys tell you they do take those games home. It's a common practice.
Example: some jackass employee tried out a copy Bad Company 2 I bought and used the multiplayer code which made my game invalid. So I had to return said game in rage.
Were you able to return it? Or did they give you some BS about "You could have just used the code and returned the game?"

When the second Rock Band Track Pack price hit about $40 for some weird reason, I tried to track down a copy that was still at $20. Every single local GameStop had a "new" copy at that price, and they did because it was gutted and sitting on the shelf in the open air.

What's stopping some kid with a cell phone camera from taking the import code and walking out of there?

If I were to buy that game anyway and find out that's exactly what happened, would they give me a refund or give me crap because I broke their "clear sticker seal" and accuse me of taking the code for free?

ive shopped at about 4 different gamestops, never had this problem. i just go up to the counter and asked for an unopened copy of whatever game. i guess ive been lucky that they have always had what i was looking for.

I saw a "new" PS2 game at GS last week. Generic GS case, no manual and they wanted full price for it!

Also even if you order online you could still get a gutted game. They sent me a DS game last week that wasn't sealed and had no manual! I'd expect that for a used game (which I know is expecting a lot) but not for a new game.
I don't know if employees can still do it, but you can always ask for the "shopworn" discount especially if its a rare game and you can find the case and manual online for cheap (did this for Digital Devil Saga 2 a few years back).

Superdry is right, you should be able to get the shopworn discount, but also realize that it is caseless because some jackass thought it would be a good idea to take it. Taking that out on the lowly sales reps is no help to anyone.

This would be why I buy my video games from Amazon. I don't like that GS does this, therefore I don't shop there. It's the magic of consumer choice. You arent being forced to shop at GS.

Am I the only one who has almost never experienced this problem? The only game I have gotten that has been gutted from them is a copy of Dead Space: Extraction, which I already knew was gutted, but got it for a steal on BF. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I've never had one of my new games that I've bought be gutted, and I've been buying from there for years!!!!

Every time I've bought a game new it was sealed. However, I've gotten new games gutted when I got a great deal on them or it isn't for me. For games like with codes included, I make sure it is sealed.

Honestly, I buy way more used games then new, so I do have a smaller chance of it happening to me.

Correct ! :applause:

I rarely shop at Gamestop in fact the last time I was thread was to trade in Madden 10 towards Madden 11. And when it's time to pickup Madden 11 IT WILL BE SEALED AND IN THE WRAPPER. Because if it's not they will find one for me our I will call corporate and tell them to ship me one.
You know what somebody with balls should do? Buy a "new" game that is gutted, and try returning it in a week for a refund. I wonder what they would say...
I tried that a couple of times with the newsed games and they immediately noticed it wasn't sealed and said 'you can only trade this in for credit towards another game, no refunds on open games'.

But after I pressed the issue and had them call the store I bought it from(who verified I bought it open box)they processed the refund promptly and I was on my way.

I'm sure that many who aren't as steadfast and mouthy like me would just shrug and relent and take the used credit.

I don't blame the store employees for having to gut the games, I blame corporate, since that's where the policy comes from.

But since we picky gamers at CAG will never be their primary customer base(aka Joe Football buying every new Madden at MSRP, Suzy Soccermom n her whiny brats, etc)they would never listen to and change the gutting policy unless we bombarded them with thousands of emails to their corporate email addy.

The way it is now, they completely gut the $4.99 and under PS2 games and just chuck the cases and everything for them(or at least they do at some of the GS stores by me). So if they didn't mind spending half a penny per coverart, they could simply print up some artwork for some of the games that might be newer releases, use the old PS2 cases for the printed coverart and forgo gutting games.

But that would cost them some potential profit and they can't do that now, can they?
What's stopping some kid with a cell phone camera from taking the import code and walking out of there?
Absolutely nothing. I know many people who do that. It's very widespread, because 90% of the time, the code they steal is already stolen. I bet you Gamestop gets all kinds of shit for that.

If your concerned about the goo, you can try products like Goo Gone. Supposedly, a good eraser can also remove some of the goo.

Finally, you can find some guides on YouTube that are supposed to get GameStop stickers off without leaving the goo.

They pulled this crap on me before as well. The last "new" game I bought was Super Street Fighter IV. Open Box. You can give them lip all you want, the stupid idiots in the store don't really care. You need to go up the CEO/VP of GS(easily track them down via google).

They might care and do something, or might not. I had issues with Chase bank and called the CEO's extension(found on google) and he was literally shocked someone actually found it, and contacted him and he found out what was going on and did something.

There are lot of practices at Gamestop I'd like to see stopped(don't buy games with no manual/sleeve/cases because they rarely if ever sell. Don't remove cases/boxes from games because then you should devalue those games more!). The list goes on and on.

Yet another "I need attention so I am gonna make another GS bashing thread" thread. Get the fuck over it already. Seriously. This is old and every time someone makes a new thread about it on here a GS employee guts another 10 cases of new games.

I've returned one. I bought Chrono Trigger. I tried taking the spine label off (why the fuck do they put the price label on the cover art?) but couldn't and just returned it. Employee was an older guy (40-50) and said it was open. I said it was a display copy, never took anything out of the case. He just shrugged and processed the return. He didn't notice the torn away label on the spine. I couldn't care less though, they can just put a new one on there.

Forget the actual gutted games issue for a second... why is the employee the one that always gets the nasty words and fingers pointed at them? A lot of these gamestop horror stories always end up with some CAG gloating about how the employee was tripped-up by their "why do you gut games" questions or how they screwed with the employee and just left the store (or just generally talking shit about them).I hardly have any retail experience, but even I know when to differentiate between employee and company stupidity. They don't gut games for fun, they do it because they have to. I'm sure there are dumbass employees out there who cop an attitude when you complain about a gutted game, but I'm sure there's also a lot of silent mumble-mouthed CAGs who take their game without a fuss and later on in the forums craft a tale about the evil employee that rang them up, who in reality probably had no idea that they committed one of the biggest "gaming sins" on the internet when they handed out a gutted game.

There's merit to the gutted games discussion, but don't go blaming the employee as if wailing on them is going to alleviate the situation.

I definitely agree with you about keeping out cool with the employees. They don't make the decisions, etc. But they are also representing GS at the front lines and have direct contact with the customers. As such, they would know and expect some of the complaints against the company will land on them. It is valid to voice our opinions against the company practices to the employees, as long as we treat them with the same respect we would give anybody else, because they can then relay the message to the manager, then the managers to their superiors, and so on. The cashier at a Gamestop store is not completely "immune" since they chose to work there after all.

My local gamestop resells trade in games as gutted 'new' copies. I suspected as such and to test it out I marked a few excellent condition games I traded in on the case with a simple black dot from a marker on the inside corner. Next time I went in and was checking out games the BFBC2 that I looked at with 'new' stickers on pricing had my dot on the inside. Anyone who thinks the same try out my method and I bet you'll find the same thing happening.

Thing of it is the employees try to defend it. I was at the last gamestop gamedays sale and it was the first day 10:00 AM opening i go in. He just put the 12 gutted copies of MW1 out for 19.99. I said you got any new copies of MW1 he said they are out there. I then reprhased do you have any non-gutted copies or sealed he then looks at me like i have a disease and says They are all out there whats the difference. I turned around as i left saying have a good day. I mean did he really need 12 gutted copies out there. If i wanted an open copy i would just get preowned and save 5 bucks.

yeah, I've seen a couple people do this in Gamestop stores. They get all huffy and aggravated about the game being open. Funnier clerks are good at making the angry hardcore gamer types look completely ridiculous, especially when there are lots of customers around.

and used games aren't usually adjusted to match the sale price during temporary sales.

I haven't tried that since once I sell something to GS I usually don't care what happened to it after that. But the one store was infamous around here for charging refurb fees on EVERYTHING traded in, even if it were just opened prior to trading it in.

I marked the artwork and disc a bit on a perfect game. As expected they nailed me with a refurb fee for it. I came back the next day to buy a copy of the same game to test my theory that they just take the fees without refurbing anything.

So I pull one of the cases off the wall and whaddya know it's mine. To further test it I brought the case up and asked to see a couple of copies of the same game cuz 'I wanted to pick out the best copy'. Lo and behold, there's my marked copy of the game in with the rest of them.

I let the clerk have it since it was the same goon who hit me with a fee the day before. He's like 'how do you know it's yours?', I show him the marks and then show him my receipt showing the fee he tacked on.

I told him he did a nice refurbing job on the game too, since it hadn't changed one bit since the prior day.

Albeit I later on learned that this was an edict passed down from their DM to try and hit as many trades as possible with a fee. Since then it's been solely up to the employees discretion and due to the high turnover rate at Gamestop the newer employees don't kiss the DM's ass as much as those old ones did.

:applause: You figured out their strategy. (HINT: They make more profit on used games...)
