Official Press Release:

TURNER BROADCASTING'S GAMETAP SPURS EVOLUTION OF BROADBAND ENTERTAINMENT WITH NEW LOOK, CHANNELS AND SHOWS

From "Fall Out Boy" to "Space Ghost Coast to Coast" and more than a record 400 games, GameTap's one-of-a-kind broadband network builds brand awareness through big names and numbers

ATLANTA - March 29, 2006 - Don't touch that dial, er, game controller! GameTap, the first-of-its-kind broadband entertainment network from Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS, Inc.), today unveiled the all new "GameTap TV," which features a dynamic mix of new channels and shows for the rapidly growing broadband community with more than 250 videos on demand. GameTap also surpasses a key milestone today by offering more than 400 video games, making it by far the largest collection of on-demand games on the internet. In addition to its new look and content, GameTap subscriptions are now available at a new price of $9.95 per month.

"Broadband entertainment is a brave new world, and as industry leaders, we're taking it in brave new directions," said Stuart Snyder, GameTap's General Manager. "By boasting the largest library of on-demand games coupled with original shows all at the right price, GameTap is at the forefront of broadband entertainment and culture."

At the center of the new "GameTap TV," GameTap now offers an array of channels each with their own unique focus, all still appealing to fans of the video games lifestyle. In addition, the shows are easily accessible and fun to watch thanks to the "big screen" TV-style viewing controls which also allow subscribers to bookmark programs, games and more, so they can click back to their favorites at any time.

"GameTap is about playing games and a whole lot more," said Ricardo Sanchez, vice president of content. "We have compelling and funny TV shows that you really can't find anywhere else. Every week, we launch new games on our service and serve up original shows to entertain you on gameplay breaks—we don't just push recycled TV content and cutting room floor material at our audience."

Among the new channels that GameTap's subscribers will experience for the first time are:

OnTap channel: This guide delivers the latest programs on the GameTap service. Whether you want the new episode of "Space Ghost Coast To Coast," with Apple Computer co-founder Steve Wozniak in the hot seat or the "Tapped In" story of the SEGA Dreamcast, the best shows on "GameTap TV" are always "OnTap."

GameTap Originals channel: Exclusive shows you won't find anywhere else! All of the GameTap original programs are housed in their entirety on this channel, such as the reality show "Challenged" (friends settle grudges with game-offs), "GameTap Survival Guide" (experts teach novices all they need to know to master specific games), "The Class of…?" (a pop-culture clip and quiz show), and "Hyper 5" (a top five countdown show spotlighting the wild, weird and wacked elements of games), to name a few.

Music channel: The world of games collides with the music scene in original programming and music videos. This channel brings top musical artists to the network, including "GamePads," a show about celebrities and how games have impacted their lives, and this month's debut of "GameTap 10," a celebrity-driven top 10 favorite video games countdown show, featuring segments with Fall Out Boy, Joe Nichols and Dem Franchize Boyz, with many others in the wings. Also featured are dozens of music videos spanning the rock, hip-hop and country genres.

Animation channel: Debuting later this spring, the channel will kick-off with an original series of animated shorts about a campus computer lab and its unusual characters in a usual situation. It is being developed by Soup2Nuts, the creators of "Home Movies," which airs on Cartoon Network. Other original animated features are also in the works.

Games channel: With an industry record-setting library of more than 400 games, this channel lets subscribers preview games in the network prior to selecting what they want to play. Among the marquee titles joining this month are "Crazy Taxi," one of SEGA's most revered offerings and "King of Monsters 1 and 2" from SNK. Capcom also delivers its first batch of games, leading off with the legendary "Ghouls 'N Ghosts" and "Ghosts 'N Goblins," as well as classic fighter "Dark Stalkers." "Populous" from EA, "Oregon Trail" from River Deep and "Baldur's Gate" from Vivendi Universal round out GameTap's new March titles. Stay tuned for what's new in April: Capcom Week, SNK Week, "King's Quest" Week and "Street Fighter" Week.

With its ever-expanding menu of shows and games, GameTap has established a solid leadership position in on-demand broadband entertainment. The estimated 184 million consumers using broadband in 2005 will nearly double to 360 million in the next five years. With a robust catalogue of on-demand offerings and new competitive price point, GameTap will remain a frontrunner in the broadband movement.

Go to www.gametap.com to preview the shows or sign up for the all you can play and watch broadband network for $9.95 per month.

About GameTap
GameTap delivers hundreds of the greatest games-on-demand plus original programming via a broadband-connected PC. To access GameTap, players securely download and install Turner-developed client software from www.gametap.com that acts as a gateway to the GameTap vault. Because games reside securely on the PC, not across a network, they act just as if they were still on the console or at the arcade. Fast response times, 3D effects, colors, and characters are all present and accounted for. New games and original programming will be added to the service each week. GameTap supports navigation and game play using keyboard and mouse, as well as most USB peripherals.

its too bad the revolution will kill gametap. i was interested in it, but 14.99 was too much... and to be honest, 9.99 is too much, for the selection at least.

for like 5-10 dollars more i can have gamefly every month I guess its good for those obsessed with older games.

I really like Gametap. Go from playing Yars revenge to Grandia 2 to Mr. Driller to Gunstar Heroes to Tropico to watching Space Ghost mock the guys who made Myst.

The problem for me, much like WoW...I just dont play it enough per month to make the 14.99 (now 9.99) really worth it. BUT, if you get a couple hours out of it per month its pretty damn cool.

The fact that they are adding all of this "new" content makes me think that Gametap is in serious trouble. I don't think they have ever released their subscribers numbers.

Ghouls and Ghosts, Ghost and Goblins and Darkstalkers where very recently added. Looking at the video side of things, you can actually choose from multiple on demand videos where they used to only have 5 selectable at a time with others hidden throughout the service.

I wonder if Sega will pull their games from Gametap when the Revolution starts, or if they avoided signing an exclusive deal with Nintendo. If that happened, looks like Gametap would lose half of their library.

I think they could both have it since it seems like Revo will be pay-per-title instead of all-you-can-play subscription that Gametap does.
Gametap looks cool...but with my slow 256k DSL I don't think I would be getting too much out of it...
Actually that wouldnt be too much of a problem. Most games are REALLY small in size. One cool thing is, unlike either xbox, you can play other games (pac-man, root beer tapper, etc.) or minimize it to the tray while larger games are downloading. The program has what seems to be weekly updates that take a while, but yet again let you use your computer in the meantime.

I find it funny that the same people who pan GameTap because "You pay money to play old games", are the same people who can't wait for the Revolution. I guess $9.99 a month is worse than shelling out $200 for a console, then however much The Big N is gonna charge for their silly SEGA Channel ripoff.

I think I will give it a try since the low price. I think $10 is a great price for this. Now $15 wasn't bad but think of all the games you get for $10. All I have to do now is find my Logitech PC controller.

I realy enjoyed gametap, untill I switched to XP 64bit, then the software was a no go :( When/if they get that fixed, I'll jump right back on board.

Anybody know if some of the games still have their multiplayer features. For example, can I play Warlords Battlecry II with a buddy using a subaccount?

Hey, I noticed some of the questions about GameTap so thought i'd chime in and answer some of them as best I can (I'm the marketing guy there, did a podcast with CheapyD a little while ago)
Im actually trying out the sample now.. Lets see how it is..

they have a few dc games on there..nice
Guyver, and anyone else, please post your feedback after you try it. Or PM me - we'd love to know what you think and have already made a bunch of user-requested changes (windowed mode, custom controller mapping, etc). Remember, we only launched 6 months ago and it was a huge effort just to get that done. Now we're up for hearing what our customers want, and figuring out how to give it to them.

iheart - Pls check back with us in a bit if the current lineup isn't exactly what you're personally looking for. we are always working on our selection, we obsess about this every hour of every day (you wouldn't believe the hurdles we have to go through just to get a game into our service). And we add games every week. Just signed a few new publishers too, so look for more announcements soon.
The fact that they are adding all of this "new" content makes me think that Gametap is in serious trouble. I don't think they have ever released their subscribers numbers.
Time Warner (our corporate parent company) has a policy against releasing sub numbers, so we just can't do it. :whistle2:#

But we can say that we;ve had over 4MM visitors to gametap.com now, and over 70% of the people who take our free trial stay on to become subscribers.

Adding content is rarely a sign that a business is in trouble, actually just the opposite in my experience, since it takes additional investment in the business. Nearly everything we've added this week has been in the works since before our launch (only six months ago). We've probably got another 6 months of adding stuff before we get all the things in the product that we wanted at launch but didn't have time. Only exception are a few user-requests that we've been able to handle as well (more to come).

I guess the only thing that wasn't 100% planned was the price change, but it was something we'd had our eye on as well. In December we did a "holiday special" at $9.95 and it did great. So we did another test in February at that price, and, yep, same thing. So we went for it, we think it opens GameTap up to a broader range of people, and the more who come in, the more content we can add.
The program has what seems to be weekly updates that take a while, but yet again let you use your computer in the meantime.
Those are most likely the catalog updates. Since we add new games and shows each week, it takes a few minutes to send them to you. Usually this happens on Thursdays.

Once in a while (like this week) we also do a new release of the software (aka, a "patch"). That happens when we make upgrades to the service itself, beyond just new games and videos. Some of this stuff will be visible to the user (like the new GameTap TV area or windowed mode we added this week), other stuff won't (like when we smooth out the catalog load time as above, or fix bugs that make the system just run better overall).

Not yet... :whistle2:#

Well...at least now they have my interest, which they didn't have before. Now that the 360 is cooling off a bit as far as new releases I may check this out.

Nice to see a GT representative (I think) show up and give some feedback to people.

I tried GameTap a while back for it's 2 week trial, it's a good service. Yeah there were mostly older games when I used it but it was full of old game I liked. The $14.99 price was a bit of a turn off since I only used it on weekends.

Now that it's $9.99, I'll probably give it a go.

If it went to $7.99-$8.50 per month then people would probably be all over it. It's weird thinking about how that $5.00 a month difference can really get people interested.

Good service, you guys should give it a try.

I don't people to abuse this, but when I tried to cancel my account, the GameTap representative gave me a free month to continue trying out the service. I am very impressed with GT's customer service, and when my month runs out, I will continue to subscribe.

Back in the day I got something like 6 months of free AOL this way. They kept giving me more months!
