Gaming Logitec 5.1 surround and X4 headphones on sale amazon.com
I got the Z5500 for $170 shipped about 4 years ago. It's been even lower than that every once in a while. They're wonderful speakers, but $230 is not at all hot
For any one who bit on the higher price on the X4s (179). I just called amazon. They no longer price guarantee. HOWEVER I argued into an exception VERY easily.

That probably means management is telling them to price guarantee only if asked directly. So go ahead and give amazon a call; if the person you get wont do it try talking to a manager or calling back.
You guys think this is good for the price? 230 still seems high for me, plus shipping..

Hes right, it does still seem a little high

I'm sure these are good prices for these items, but the fact that anyone would actually buy them boogles my mind.

The X4 are over priced junk (so are the X3 and any gaming headset that claims to do 5.1). Like I said in the other X4 thread yesterday, you can get a good pair of wired headphones that'll sound better at a lower price.

The Logitech 5.1 is probably an ok system, but for a small bit more you could get a good Onkyo 5.1 Home Theater in a Box and for a not much more then that you can get a 7.1 system. Without doing any research on either of those I'm fairly confident that the Onkyo is better then the Logitech.

I don't mean to come off as jerk and I understand the desire to save some scratch, but why throw quality out the window just to save a few bucks?

I want headphones for gaming, but not totally necessary I guess. Wish there were great/cheap options for my ps3 w/o need for a receiver..

Actually, the X3/X4s are useful if you don't have a receiver, or want to play on a tv without a receiver. With the wired headphones, you'll still need the receiver to convert the audio, right?

Yeah, you'd still need a receiver unless...

1) your TV has a head phone jack.

2) you bought something like the JVC SU-DH1 surround headphone adapter. Which will accept an optical cable that you could run from your PS3 or 360. Those run around $100. So that kinda goes against the grain of cheap. Still if you're already looking at around $150 - $200 on some junky headphones, then you're still in the $200 ballpark with the adapter and set of headphones.

3) you're gaming on a PC and then all you need to do is have a sound card that supports 5.1/7.1, which I'd imagine most people who game on PC's already have.

4) you wanted to look for a used receiver for around $100 and start building a real 5.1/7.1 system. I'm going to be selling my harmon/kardon AVR 330 for around $100 and it's a great receiver. You could probably find a similar deal in your area. Get that and start piecing in speakers and when you're done with those then you can choose if you want to upgrade to a new receiver or not. Of course you could start with the new now, but then it's not going to be as cheap and by the time you get the whole system pieced together you're probably going to want to upgrade the receiver anyways.

I just bought the Audio Technica ATH-AD700 headphones off Amazon for $107. I was thinking of the Sennheiser HD555, but the impressions I was reading on head-fi.org said that the AD700 was better for gaming.

The best recommendation I can give is go read the forums on head-fi.org. They've been a wealth of information for me. Know what your willing to spend on headphones, once you find the brand and model you want go and find the best deal possible.

The Logitech is for my computer system. I don't need 7.1 on it. I already have a great surround system that cost $1200 for my 46 inch Samsung A650. I think a lot of people use this Logitech for the computer, with some using it for an actual home theater. You're right its not good enough for a dedicated home theater, its good, but not top quality. I would think most use it as a kickass computer sound system.

Yeah, I realize that, but I've actually read where people use this for their main home theater unit. I've always assumed that it's good for a computer, but other then that you need to look at other equipment.

I have a reasonably decent system (Onkyo Receiver, Polk Speakers, etc.), but I don't want to have to deal with the extra hassle. Buying the AD-700 headphones or something similiar will lead me down a dark path. First I would spend an hour everyday for several weeks studying every pair of headphones on the market before deciding on one. Then I would need a receiver with Dolby Headphone technology, which is another $400-$500. Oh yeah, don't forget the amp for the headphones.

Besides, these headphones are CheapyD approved ;)

Now just to figure out where to locate the receiver so I don't get interference from the Plasma.
