I'm about to purchase a console.. either a PS3 or Wii.. I like what both have to offer but I also aware of their weaknesses..

PS3:
+ PS3 is better for the HDTV
+ 5 blu ray movies with purchase
+ PSN, the games available, the games that are coming
+ much easier to purchase right now
- more expensive than a Wii
- not too many good games out right now

Wii:
+ Cheaper than the PS3
+ ton of good games out
+ VC and online service looks good
+ Innovative controls
- I'm a sports nut, I'm a little leary of the controls for Madden and no NCAA football
- Graphics don't look that great on HDTV

I keep going back and forth on the issue.. I don't have any friends that have a Wii...so in terms of local multiplayer.. it will be mostly my wife and me playing the games.

Lair, Motorstorm, and Resistance interest me.. but so does LoZ, Mario Galaxy, and Metroid Prime 3... so I'm really don't know what to do... I'm not looking to make this a console war.. I just would like some feedback from owners of both systems

Well, I don't have a PS3 at the moment, but here goes...

If you can find a Wii, I would go for that, as you seem more excited about the games on / coming to the Wii in the very near future than the PS3. The 360 you already have will probably be the best bet for sports games (though Wii controls on Madden, while needing some learning, are a lot of fun). Games like Wii Sports are great if you can have several people over the house at once, but even if that doesn't happen real often, you and your wife should have fun with the system.

Give the PS3 some time to let its software library become more robust. Once there's more out there to really pull you in, jump at it. By that time, there may be a true price cut out there as well, the gamse you'd like to check out now will likely be cheaper, etc.

So, nab a Wii if you can as its price and availability aren't gonna change any time soon. Just my thoughts.

Are you interested in playing PS2 or Ps1 games? If so you might want to nab a PS3 soon. Sony is clearing out their inventory of the first generation systems and will be removing the Emotion Engine chip so emulation will be done by software and will not work nearly as well.

I have both systems. I played the crap out of the Wii for the first few months but after Zelda and Wii Sports there hasn't been a whole lot that's excited me (I do want to try Big Brain Academy) but they've got some big titles due out by the end of the year.

I've primarily used the PS3 as a Bluray player. In the last couple months I've been playing MLB 07' The Show and NCAA Football 08.

Get a Wii.

PS3 is only gonna get cheaper as time goes by. Give it some time for the games to appear. Theres nothing worth buying a ps3 for right now.

The only reason to get one now is if you just have to have that EE chip to play ps1/2 games. Personally, I just use a ps2 for that purpose.

With the Wii, you have the added insurance of being able to sell the system for at least break even, well into 2008, should you change your mind.
REMOVED BY MOD
Good heavens, stop spamming! Can't wait till we get the Forum Guides figured out to have a few more people online to take care of crap like this.

OP I didn't see you mention if you have an HDTV or not. I would go with the PS3 if you do. We have all three new systems and while I don't play to many games on the PS3 (I usually go with the 360 version) it is a great Blu-Ray player and the PS3 games will come. I haven't really gotten in to many Wii games myself. I start to play them but rarely go back to them. My wife and son (he is five) love the Wii though. Currently I play most of my console games on the 360.

Best way to make this decision is to figure out what games you must have. Generally, that in itself will be enough to determine which console you get. But if it's fairly equal, then you can take into consideration the other points you mentioned (cost, HD, etc) if you're only getting one now. And if you're only ever getting the one, then the games definitely have to be the biggest factor.

I love what both systems have to offer as far as games.. I do have a ps2.. and I also have a gamecube... so bc is not that important to me...

My notes in red.
PS3:
+ PS3 is better for the HDTV You do have an Xbox 360 to play hi-def games
+ 5 blu ray movies with purchase certainly a big plus!
+ PSN, the games available, the games that are coming another big plus
+ much easier to purchase right now well, if you're going to buy something, you can at least take the time to find it
- more expensive than a Wii but is it WORTH it to you?
- not too many good games out right now well, not too many good games on the Wii either

Wii:
+ Cheaper than the PS3 but is it a bigger bang for your buck?
+ ton of good games out huh??? Such as?
+ VC and online service looks good ugh, virtual console has a bunch of classics you already own, but the online play is terrible
+ Innovative controls definitely makes the Wii stand out from the other consoles
- I'm a sports nut, I'm a little leary of the controls for Madden and no NCAA football don't you have an Xbox 360?? also: people love the madden controls
- Graphics don't look that great on HDTV once again: you can get that on the 360
Well, I don't know what to make of the pros and cons you listed. I think the only good way to decide on buying a console is to weigh them game against game.

By Christmas this year, both consoles will have enough AAA titles that you can make an objective decision on it.

Depends on what you are looking for in a system. While this might change with future titles, at the moment I own a Wii but pretty much only for playing multiplayer games when I have friends over. Since you mention it'll be mostly you and your wife playing it bears keeping in mind. I will say though that my wife loves the Wii, and that you'll probably catch less flack for buying a system you can play together than a more expensive system that you'll play by yourself with.

Well, my thoughts come down to price

To me, the PS3 is twice as much, it needs an overwhelming reason to get that over the Wii. If you are going to get one, you have to get the Wii unless there is an overwhelming reason to get the PS3.

In nothing that you wrote did you convince me that you believe the PS3 is overwhelmingly better. Because of this, I would suggest getting the Wii, and waiting for the PS3 to drop in price.

I can't really say one way or the other for you, but I will say that you don't have to buy a retail PS3 at full price. You can find a great bundle deal on a used one if you check out ebay and craig's list. Just make sure they can provide you with the receipt, because you'll need it for the warranty.

You should invest in PS2/X360 games instead of opting for a Wii or PS3. Unless you want to watch Hi-Def movies, you'll have spent money on products you don't use. Now is not the time to opt for either a PS3 or Wii.

The Wii doesn't look bad by any means on an HDTV if you get the component cables. I think it looks really good. Also, I'd like to say that I wasn't even considering a Wii until I played it at my friend's house - I went out and bought one two days later. My girlfriend felt the same way about it. The thread with the weekly ads has very reliable information on which stores will be getting Wiis in stock, so finding one shouldn't be too hard.

As for PS3, I'm sure it's a fine piece of equipment, though the only experience I have with it was playing it in the store. Neither Resistance nor Motorstorm knocked my socks off, but Virtua Fighter 5 was pretty damn good. If I wanted a PS3 I'd definitely consider whether or not I need the EE chip that's going to be phased out.

I would also say to consider waiting it out a little for more solid games to come out on both systems, but, considering the PS3 just had a price drop, it might be a good time to jump on it. I can't see a Wii price drop before the holidays, so waiting until sometime next year for a $50 price drop doesn't really pay off in my mind either.

Out of all of your "Wii Pros" I really only agree with the cheaper price. There are not a ton of good games out right now, IMO - Zelda and RE4 are GREAT but that's about it - SPM is not my thing and Wii Sports is OK but gets old quick. The VC is also useless to me since I've already played all/most of the games offered that I'm interested in - it might be different for you but it's definitely not a selling point for me. The controls are innovative I guess but they are also kind of annoying in that you can't just lounge back and play - you always have to be sitting up straight and pointing the controller at the TV. Last night I was trying to play Zelda and I kept getting the "point remote at the screen" message and I was ready to kill someone. Other than maybe RE4 and Wii Sports, I still haven't played a game where the motion controls really changed the experience for the better. That said, I'd still get a Wii since you already have a 360 - there are some nice looking games coming like SSBM, Metroid and Mario and 3rd parties should be pumping stuff out since it is such a success. It's a hard choice for sure because the PS3 is starting to shape up and it doubles as a blu-ray player.

i'm actually sell my 360.. before you flame me.. I'll probably get another once they do a redesign and the issues of Red Ring..but for right now I'm moving on...so I won't have a 360 after this...

why do you say that?? because I don't want to deal with the support headache or nightmare i see everywhere??

*sigh* You completely misread my post *sigh*

I'm saying once you sell your 360, you won't have a "traditional" or "real" gaming console.

If you want a "traditional" or "real" gaming console, your only choice (out of the PS3 and the Wii) is the PS3.

So, only if you can handle not having a "traditional" or "real" gaming console, should you consider buying the Wii.

I'm saying some people (myself included) would not be able to handle having ONLY a Wii, because it's not enough to satisfy their gaming needs. It's a nice extra console to have alongside your 360 or PS3, but it's not traditional, or a "real" gaming console, so to speak. I couldn't personaly handle just having a Wii.

The Wii is my most current and only "current gen" system and I'm quite happy. Zelda:TP will easily keep you busy until Metroid Prime, Smash, and Mario Galaxy hit this fall. The Virtual Console keeps getting better and better. Plus there's a whole library of cheap GameCube classics. I don't play games as much as I used to, and realized that I was trying to buy games like I used to, but not having time to play them. I think that's an endemic problem among 20+ gamers is that now we can spend money on games more than we could as kids, but can't spend nearly as much time playing them. The Wii is great if you're a 10 or less hour a week gamer. Having the immense PS2 backlog of titles from last gen to still get through to back it up doesn't hurt either.

I'm addicted to Devil's Crush pinball right now.. and Ninja Spirit. Can't wait for the Neo Geo games to start up, and the Wii Ware stuff.

While I might not agree or might be misinterpreting what PyroGamer means by a 'real' system, I do agree with him that if you do a lot of single-player gaming then the Wii is not the best choice at the moment. Plus with many of the single player games I've played, I've preferred traditional control schemes over the wii remote.

Of course that should change when developers gain more experience with the system, but if you are buying a system soon you should be aware of.

If you're not currently having a problem with the 360 hardware then giving it up now to buy it again later seems an odd choice to me. Giving up a concole right be for the holiday season might be a decision you'll later regret.

He says he'll buy another one in the fall when the new chips are out.

Personally if I were going to do such a thing, I would have sold my console before the price drop.

QFT. The Wii can be fun but at the end of the day I think I need something else to go along with it.

i've been trying for a while to do so...

How much are you trying to get for it?

EDIT: and a litte P.S.

If you haven't sold it yet, you might be better off just waiting for it to die, and then replacing it through MS for a new falcon later on. Then you lose no money on the deal, and your arcade games will be transfered.

sounds like a plan Pyro.. if this pending sale doesn't go through.. I'm getting 400 for it and a couple of games...

if you're going to go without the 360 for a while, then get the PS3. Remember that it's also a PS1 and PS2 :) I think you'll get a much bigger bang for your buck with the PS3, especially if you find a cheaper used one. It definitely won't collect dust, like the Wii might (depending on how much you like the gamecube and VC games.)

There isn't that much in terms of retail for the PS3, but the PSN games are like the most underrated and under exposed games so far this gen.

I would buy a wii considering Metroid, Smash Brawl, and Mario are all within reach this year. Then, wait for the PS3 to come down in price, as I dont see any good games yet. I'll be buying a PS3 when MGS, FFXIII, Heavenly Sword, White Knight, and all those other awesome games come out :D

How long do you plan to go without a 360? There are a lot of PS3/360 only games that are coming out this fall that you'd be missing out on. Wii has a few great ones coming out this year, but not as many as the PS3/360.

Another thing to consider is how much do you care about online play?

I hope for the other guy's sake that those are some brand-fucking new games, because that's a damn good price, there.

Good luck!

Wii is crap for games. All it has other then Zelda, RE4 and a couple of other is just party games. Those get tiring really, really fast. Unless you have tons of people over all the time then a Wii is not a good choice for now. I think that for the next 4 months the PS3 has more going for it then the Wii.

well update... the deal fell through.. I'm sticking with my 360.. I'm doing some spring cleaning with my buddy list.. feel free to add me to your list...
