GBA SP and the e-reader

Due to some cheap-ass price matching and store-credit shenanigans, I currently have two GBA SP's as well as a "spare" glacier GBA still in the box. I just got the e-reader from that bundle deal, and now I have a cheap-ass dilemna.

My first instinct was to sell the glacier GBA (old-style GBA) on ebay... I'd probably get around 60 for it (the glacier ones tend to sell for a bit more than the purple ones). But then I noticed how awkward the e-reader is with the SP. It DOES work, it's just ugly and somewhat intrusive, the way it sticks out the bottom and all... plus, the piggy back port actually sticks out over the bottom of the SP, so you can't actually close the SP with the e-reader attached.

So I'm thinking of keeping the old GBA and just leaving the e-reader on it... basically I'll use that GB for the e-reader, plus I'll have a backup GB for playing multi-GB gamecube games. It seems dumb for me to use an old GBA when I have 2 SPs, but who knows, it may be worth it. What do y'all think?

The GBA SP is cute but I prefer the original. I'll end up buying an Onyx SP but only because I like the color. The original feels better in your hands and, if you drop an afterburner into it, plays just like the SP without the awkwardness. My OG-GBA w/ afterburner has better lighting than the SP model. And since it's the Glacier model it looks really cool in the dark. It really boils down to personal preference but I wouldn't sell that Glacier just yet.

I don't like the GBA at all. Once I put my hands on a GBASP I was sold. It's true that an afterburner would fix the lighting, but I don't want to send my GBA away to someone and hope they get it right. Just my two cents.

i completely agree with daphatty. The SP is definitely very stylish looking, and a good advancement from the nintendo gameboy industry. I however just can't quite get used to the layout of the SP because its so different, and the original feels so much more comfortable in my hands. They switched around the start button, so its more awkward to press especially if you play mario and luigi (plus i'm a lefty, which doesn't help much), which is the game they always have when they have the SP on the cord in the store. the shoulder buttons are also placed kind of strangely, making my fingers having to reach up so high gets a mini-cramp in them. Backlit's excellent, but I almost always feel no need for light since all the places i'm in are always well-lit, and for backup i have a worm light on my glacier gba normal. thats just my opinion, though, because some people prefer the SP feel instead of the original. but i think that its a good decision to keep the old one. SP's sell for more anyways! ;)

Why would you do that? I did the mod myself and couldn't be happier. In fact, I value my GBA more because I did the mod. Maybe that makes me biased but I'm happy. :D:D:D

Great minds think alike. Well almost. Wormlight? Yuk! :whistle2:#

Thanks for the input, guys!

Quick question... one of my main hang-ups about the old GBA is the battery issue. Do third-party battery packs tend to work well? If they do, that's good news, because at most gamestops you can get pre-owned GBA battery packs for REALLY cheap. I probably won't be doing the afterburner thing because I'd rather just sell the GBA and put the extra money towards an SP. So in that sense I more concerned with having to buy batteries than I am with the light issue.

I have to agree that the original gba feels better than the sp. After long gaming sessions my hands start to cramp up. I still sold my gba after getting my sp however. Any marathon sessions will be played on the gamecube. I personallly don't use my ereader enough to care, but you're right it sure doesn't fit well!

I never got used to the GBA. I could never get a good enough grip on it to be skillful at any games. I was always holding it with my fingertips and could never use the shoulder buttons effectively.

The Gameboy player was a godsend. I could finally play with some confidence. Then I got an SP for xmas and saw the light at the end of the tunnel. I can cradle the thing between my hands just like an original NES pad, only the corners are more rounded and more comfortable. I don't know what you guys are talking about, the GBA is an ergonomic nightmare for me.
