Gears of War Only 8 Mp maps at release?

Daddy

CAGiversary!
Anyone else not happy about that (yes you can check the info at epic forums) i thought Halo 2's 8 maps was bad enough but on a good side you can play the entire single player campaign co-op!!!

I would imagine that the maps would be pretty large. It's not enough to cancel a preorder or frustrate anyone into not buying it, but then again, they will most likely add map packs so there will be a bunch by the time this game gets old.

You must be a man of excess, because eight maps is fine and dandy.

I could care less about maps. My main concern is can you play co-op over live.

I was really upset I could not play co-op over live with Halo 2.

Good. More maps just means a bigger gap between the casual online players, and the hardcore ones. If you have a ton of maps, your average online game might get into a game on a map he has never seen before, and has no clue where to go. I would rather have 8 well designed, large maps, and be able to get the feel for all of them within a couple days, than 16 or 24 maps that were just thrown in as filler, and which will take me 2 frickin' weeks just to learn them all.

Only 8? I know there is a supposedly rich story line in single player, but only 8 multiplayer maps? I can see the nickel and diming from a mile away on this one...

8 maps is fine... on most FPS's people only play a small number of maps anyways. A game can ship with 50 or so maps and people will still play the same set of 6 anyways, so who cares.

8 is ok with me....I know they will charge for extra maps anyways, not a big deal. I'm sure it will be ok...

Maybe they will go the route like CoD2, where they gave you a couple maps for free and then enticed you to pay.

Not really. Didn't they only release one map pack, which ended up being free after a while?

Had 3 map packs. 1 was free, 1 had 2 maps and cost 5, the third had 5 maps and cost 10. The ones that cost money were free after like 2 months.

Im happy with 8.
Can anyone answer for sure if they have heard that co-op will work over live?

I REALLY am dying to know.
They said yes already..basically your sidekick in the single player gets taken over by your friend at anytime he chosses to hop on...sweet stuff

I hope that's true. Because I bought Halo 2 and my friend bought Halo 2 thinking we could play co op over live, and can't.

I know you can play 'anytime' co op, I just have not seen a specific reference to it being done over live yet. I know it works fine split screen.

You can its posted at Epic's forums

Cliffy has pretty much stated that multiplayer isn't their main focus with Gears of War.
A multiplayer mode is planned, but is not expected to be a major feature at this stage. Epic developer Cliff Bleszinski has stated that the presentation of this game will be cinematic in scope, and chaotic, destructible environments will be an important aspect of gameplay.
And for thrustbucket...
Cooperative Play

Co-op in Gears of War will let up to two players play through the game from starting to end. One of the more interesting aspects of co-op in Gears of War is the ability to invite players on the users’ friends list and have them instantly pop in the player’s game to help them out. Cooperative Play will also differ from the single-player game in some ways. Cliffy B has stated that there will be different paths throughout every level which will allow the players to decide on which path they want to take, and they will also be able to support their teammate on their side. It has also been said that Player One will be Marcus, and Player Two will be his buddy, Dom. [2]

I need 15 maps at least...b/c of the "play the same 2-3 maps" factor
Depends on how many modes there are as well. Halo 2 was fine for quite some time b/c there were so many different types of games to play.

8 is good, I'm guessing every 4-6 months they'll come out with about 4 new ones for 400... until they have say about 20

I think the game's longevity will be better with fewer maps at launch. It gives players a chance to learn the gameplay instead of learning map details. Then releasing more maps later just prolongs the game's life. People tend to shift which maps they play, rather than getting 16 all at once and being spread out at first, and then having the hardcore only playing a couple of them anyway. Maps that may not stand out at launch may be more interesting in 6 months just because they're new as well. So I'm OK with 8. If the game is great, I won't mind paying for more. If it's not, I probably won't be playing it by the time more maps release anyway so I won't care...

My concerns are :

8 maps
Cheating through private chat in spectator mode
4 vs 4 in MP mode?

Oh and here is the gamespot X06 mp hands on comment about spectator:

When you die in a Gears of War multiplayer game, which won't happen nearly as often once people figure out that it's really not that much work to revive fallen squadmates if you reach them in time, you'll enter a spectator mode. As a spectator you can choose to watch the rest of the match either from a vantage point that gives you a view of almost the whole map, or from an over-the-shoulder camera following one of your colleagues

similiar to socom iirc. I played the first one to death, and I very rarely came across problems with it. In socom once you were dead, you could only talk to other dead people playing socom. I am sure they could eliminate the privat chat function for dead players.

8 is just about right, 10 would be nice but 8 isn't worth complaining about. Be thankful for small favors - Day of Defeat: Source only had FOUR maps when it came out, and it's a multiplayer only game!

8 is perfect. LOL look at Counter-Strike players, such huge popularity yet they only play 6 maps anyway. de_dust, de_dust2, de_aztec, cs_office, cs_italy, cs_inferno

10 is fine by me, although now I'm sure someone will cry because it isn't 20 maps instead.

I'm sure there will be some sort of downloadable content in future a few months after the game is released, so there could be more than that for people who aren't happy with just 10 maps.

Which is why i stopped playing long ago

10 maps is good. Like everyone else said, most people only play the same 3 or 4 maps online with other games.

I care more about online co-op anyway. That is a big selling point for me.

Eight maps is good, especially if the maps are as good as they say they are. More maps and Co-Op missions will come as downloadable content, I just hope they'll be free.
