General Gaming Thread #13 - As Linear As Final Fantasy 13

Hey now some of us like Linear games.
(like the dudes who love cod)
Its probably the same dudes bitching the linearity in it that loved MW2.

JRPGs have been linear. FFXIII is just honest about it.
Hey Rei, how would I find out if the GS I preordered GOW3 at is hosting a Midnight launch?
If it's not a mall store then it's almost definitely having one. Gamestop.com should have a listing up next week too.

TONS of games are linear. This one just gets extra shit for it, for some reason.

Better than having them dump me off in the middle of some Bethesda snoozefest.

Why do people go to midnight launches?
I do not understand people who do that and who take of days to play video games. Is vacation time that unimportant to them?

O NO THEY CUT OUT UNIMPORTANT TOWN #7.
How will I ever go into the house and press "X" on everything that looks like it could have sweet lewt in it.

Im glad they cut that bullshit out.

Only time I've ever been to a midnight is when I've had to work it...

I used to go to them back in high school when I had the time to piss away.

Agreed completely. "Let's have a big empty world that you can roam around aimlessly in. That's what everyone wants, right?" Wrong.

I couldn't agree more. It's not like it's a town in a WRPG where you'll find tons of quests and things to do. In JRPGs towns have almost always been pointless save the inn and shop.

Looks at every bethesda game, ever.
I hope Activision buys Zenimax.

I think games losing exclusivity basically ruins hype surrounding a game. And it seems reviews are somewhat agreeing with that assessment (XIII could be reviewed lower than X-2 at this rate).
Reviews are a product of hype
So while it was a big deal in Japan, not so much here. I guess waiting 3 extra months hurt it as well.

Right now for my March hype level, it's...
#3 - Final Fantasy XIII
#2 - Pokemon SS
#1 - God of War III

If I included my overall hype level, only God of War would be in my Top 5.

I completely agree with your assessment of March, good sir!

I'm gonna be buying Pokemon Soul Silver this month and adding Final Fantasy XIII to my Gamefly queue. I think games like Dragon Age: Origins and Fallout 3 make me feel less interested in another Final Fantasy game, but I'm going to give it a go.

Well, everyone knows people are just mad that they lose the opportunity to get to the "omg this is huge and awesome looking" city, ala esther. The ground is transparent blue omg!!

I might have gone to the FF13 midnight launch. But have to work on the night it comes out(yay for working overnight).

Thanks to Gamestop's tradein deals I'll be getting more games this month then I originally planned. I paid off Metro 2033, Pokemon Soul Silver, FFXIII and GoW3. I also put $20 towards Splinter Cell. And I'm thinking of putting the rest of my credit down on Dragon Age Awakening.
I still cant get excited about FFXIII... strange enough I look forward to Versus and PSP Agito thing way way more than just reg XIII
Not enough indie.

There's a difference between Final Fantasy VI/VII linear and Final Fantasy X linear. VI/VII are similar to BioWare games like ME2 and DA:O in that you quickly hit a point where you can choose which quest to handle next. Side quest? Main quest? Explore? Great. X was pretty much "hold up, mash a, hold up, mash a, repeat til you finish the game."

So if it's the latter, that's really unfortunate. :(

So, do collector people get mad when you resurface games? I was gonna get Xenogears resurfaced so its all pretty before I put it on fleabay.

I cannot fucking wait for FF13. Only game I am going to get this month, other than Soul Silver if my sister's find my ds. :bomb:

I have a feeling that I'm going to pick up my preorder of FF XIII, bring it home, look at the sealed package for a couple days, and ultimately return it for something else or another preorder. I keep hoping that I'll get sort of caught up in the hype but it hasn't happened.

Ughhh, I hate allergies, I feel like I'm deader than a doornail right now. Doctor said I should get rest to lower my chances of getting the flu, so I'm going to do that...

TUESDAY WHEN FF COMES OUT!

BOOSH!

That is probably the most tempting video since Watchmen's teaser trailer I've ever had waved in front of me.

I don't think I'll partake, though. I want it all to be a surprise, just in case the first ten minutes of GoW3 is like the first ten minutes of ME2.

If you've seen the latest trailer, you're not really going to see anything besides "oh, holy shit, this is going to blow my face off for the next 10 hours."

Thanks for the heads up... I'm not sure how it will work, but I need to go over that way anyhow, since I want my GoW3 preorder artwork thing. >.< So I guess I can ask them tonight.

Yes, they would get mad if you didn't mention that in your description. People have returned games to me for lesser mistakes.

If the scratches aren't that cosmetically bad and don't interfere with gameplay, it's better to not get it resurfaced.

Hm.. I have $20 Amazon Credit, $60 TRU Credit, and $60 GS credit.

I should probably decide where I'm going to get GoW3.

I also need to start (and finish) a playthrough of GoW2 from the collection in the next week.

I have GoW3 preordered at gamestop... I have the $5 preorder that's been moving from game to game since before L4D and a $25 gc + whatever's on my edge card still ($10 maybe?) so it's a no brainer to get it from GS -- especially if there's a midnight launch here. I'm seriously thinking about taking a vacation day for tuesday 3/16 and just marathoning the hell out of it. :)

Question: Is there anyway to turn off the trophy notification on the PS3? It's annoying when that message pops up, and trophies are stupid.

I don't think so.

If you turn off "notifications" on the 360, does it supress achievement pops too? *shrug*

Yes, annoyingly it does.

I want to keep the achievement ones but suppress the "X is Online" pops.

Easy solution? Play off Live. :)
That would work for PS3 too, except he wants all notifications essentially blocked.
I wonder if there's a setting somewhere -- I've never looked.
Dallow, come school us.

Turning off notifications on PS3 is only for the 'x is online/offline' and message pop ups. Trophy pop ups remain, but at least it's not in the middle of the screen.

360 is all or nothing.

:(

Oh, those halcyon days where I didn't have to be bothered by meaningless notifications while playing games. Le sigh.

Well, I'll get over it. But trophies are seriously pretty annoying.

yeah, but it's hard to get excited about trophies.

Trophies are so utterly meaningless. At least with the cheese you have a point number. Trophies all you have is some stupid level.
