jer: Isn't DQV confirmed for a spring '09 release? Anyway, I think we should see it soon.
Amazon has it up for a Feb. 17 release. Squeenix tax included.

Best of 2005:
Digital Devil Saga 1/2

Best of 2008:
No More Heroes
Etrian Odyssey II
TWEWY

Disappointments:
Don't tend to buy anything potentially disappointing until it's really cheap. Which would be 2009.

Street Fighter 4 and Resident Evil 5 will probably be the only games I buy for a while.

I'm looking forward to the GTA and Fallout expansions too.

Can anyone suggest a receiver with HDMI?

I'm so bad about lists.

Game that most surprised me:
Fallout 3
Little Big Planet (Awful, floaty controls and limited creation aspects)
You never even played this game, and limited?..... hehe
Haven't played Mirror's Edge other than the demo, but for those who were disappointed what was so disappointing?
No idea. I'm enjoying the game so far.

Top games I've played this year that were released in 08.

Mirror's Edge - (just beautiful, free flowing, biggest flaw is the lame, cliched story)
LittleBigPlanet - (super cute, addictive, played through the whole story mode with my lady friend, first game we've done that with, played lots of online games with my friends)
Gears of War 2 - (easily beats out the first one in terms of intensity, i was surprised, everything about it was thrilling, only played co-op)
Patapon - (reason i still hang on to my psp, can't wait for part 2)
Pixeljunk Eden - (very original, slick visuals, great music)
Fallout 3 - (just started my adventure on this but wow, was not expecting this having never played oblivion)
Crash Commando - (surprise PSN game of the year, extremely fun online)

Worst game I played this year:
Haze - (but that was expected)

If I'm missing something, I probably haven't played enough of it, or at all to make an opinion.
Or I just can't recall that it came out in 08, I'm bad at remembering that stuff.

EDIT:

Braid - (how could I forget?!, one of the finest puzzle games ever, didn't care too much for the story but the ending was clever)

I'm not sure if anything I played this year was better than God Of War: Chains Of Olympus. I'm pretty sure that will change when I finish Fallout 3, LBP, Prince of Persia and MGS4.

No doubt that Mirrors Edge, GoW and Castle Crashers are in my top 10 though. So is Tales Of Vesperia.

Well looks like Tales of Vesperia is sold. Kinda wanted to play it, but oh well.

Is tales of the abyss any good? I have two copies left to sell and I could keep one if I wanted.
Glad to see you're liking Fallout 3, Mr. Dallow. It is one incredible game. How far in are you?
Not even that far into it.

I think I'm moving at a snails pace as I like to keep collecting crap, and going back to my 'home' and storing it.

I'm in the middle of like 5 different quests. :)

I really want a dog, is that later in the game? I've had a few come out and help me kill mutants, but then they turn on me. :(
I just wanted to pet him, but I had to beat him with my bat.

I played enough of the beta to know I don't want to play the real thing.

And yes, limited. No jumping physics modification/shallow character customization, and every level basically needs to follow the same formula- Jump around and collect bubbles or control machines in a very indirect manner.

The game may allow for much diversity in a platforming style level, but anything that tries to be too different feels very gimmicky and disconnected, that I played.

Wow. I'm stuck in Little Big Planet. Its the Wedding Reception level in the Wedding. Its the part where there are a bunch of jumping platforms, and there is a bed of electric spikes and skull heads beneath. I keep dying. Like, 8 times.

Yeah I'm doing what I did with Oblivion .. ie completing every side quest and exploring every bit of the world before I do the main quest.

And you can get a dog at the salvage yard. If I remember correctly its located east of Spring Vale. (I think)

The only things for sure I'm picking up in the beginning of the year are Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection and Pokemon Platinum. I'll just wait on sales and target clearance for everything else.

It's a side-scrolling platforming game! That's exactly the type of level diversity it's going for.

Were you expecting someone to make a sweet FPS?

The fact that people can even make those novelty levels of functioning calculators and games of Tetris from rods and pistons go to show the power of the creation tools.

EDIT: That you've played. Yes, from the short lived beta that didn't give out all the creation tools and when people were just starting to get their feet wet with them.

Haven't played many 2008 games, mainly checked some older games.

My favorite so far is Gears 2. Also like Castlevania: Order of Ecclasia ok, but haven't touched it since I was home over Thanksgiving as Gears 2 and Oblivion have sucked up all my gaming time.

I was disappointed in GTA IV and Ninja Gaiden II, but that was really just the fact that I've never liked the GTA games nor most hard, skill based action games rather than anything wrong with the games. Just not my cup of tea. Also a few games I tried demos for and didn't care for--Mirror's Edge being the main example that comes to mind.

Several games I still need to play. The World is Not Enough (on it's way from Goozex), Fallout 3, Fable II, Left 4 Dead, Dead Space etc.

NGII isn't skill based, unfortunately.

Just cuz you ain't got the skills.

Go play Ninja Blade.

From what I've seen, it doesn't have the diversity of much older side-scrolling platformers like Super Mario Brothers 3, Super Mario World etc. i.e. it lacks power ups, abilities, moves etc.

Maybe that's what he was getting at?
NGII isn't skill based, unfortunately.
Whatever it is, it was too hard for me even on Acolyte, largely because I have no interest in memorizing combos etc.
Once again...you are in a PhD program but cannot memorize X,X,X,Y?
As I said before, of course I can easily memorize them. I just don't find it fun to do so and I play games to have fun. And I don't like hard games in general as they're not fun for me as I don't play to challenge myself.

Why do people have to be such pricks when someone doesn't like a game they do?

He said it does have good level diversity for side-scrolling platform levels.
That's why I bolded it.

Right, the lack of power-ups/game changing mechanics gets dull very quickly. Think of some of the best platformers of all time. They all use various means to empower the player and change up the style of gameplay.

Pure just jumping does get dull quickly. The reason people enjoy Yoshi's Island, for example, beyond the cute art style and quirky music are the tight controls, and the huge variety of gameplay styles beyond jumping and running. You can throw eggs at targets, eat enemies, transform into a helicopter/drill, there's that fun level with the enemies that make you dizzy, and the fantastic, epic end boss fight. Not to mention fun bonus games. LBP has none of these things. You can run, you can jump, you can grab things.

Little big planet is pretty one dimensional by comparison. I'm not saying they need to match one of the best platformers ever made on their first try, but it is 2008, and that game was made over 10 years ago.

Not that it matters, it's a sony product and you're going to defend it regardless. LBP and MGS4 were the biggest disappointments of the year, exclusive on the biggest disappointment of the generation.
He said it does have good level diversity for side-scrolling platform levels.

Ah. I misread it.

I see his gripe though, assuming he's talking about user created levels. I like playing a platformer that has some shitty plot, and a bunch of well designed levels that fit together cohesively. Just a nice, well put together experience.

I don't see much appeal in playing through a bunch of random, stand alone levels personally. It's neat to look at what people make, and if you play games for challenges I suppose having a never ending supply of levels to play through is great.

Though I'd still pick it up if I ever got a PS3 (which I won't) just to play through the main game since I love 2D platformers, even if they're rudimentary in terms of lacking powerups etc.

My friend just got a 360, and wants to grab some arcade games with a points card.

So far he wants Mega Mang, Turtles...but I can't think of one more game for 5.00

I'd say Geowars but he might as well save for the second one.

Okay, disregard my comments. It'll make my disappointment and the terrible sales (and thus, many other people's disappointment) go away.

Just ignore it. It'll go away.

I really wish I had more time to play games, that is literally ALL I played this year :(

I haven't had a chance to go through TONS of games.

You should see my desk at work and my desk at home.

It looks like I robbed a GameStop lol!

Yes, that's all you do, and in Mario 1 all I did was run, jump, and shoot fireballs. It's easy to oversimplify things.

You just missed the charm of a game you didn't even play seriously.

When I still see up to 10 people a day still playing LBP, obviously, there's something there keeping them playing.
You can not like the game, but say that after you've really played it. My buddy didn't really enjoy it, and we played through half the game. Never gave him shit about it.

Limited options. ;)
Now you're comparing Yoshi's Island to LBP?
Oh brother.
I think the point is this:

LBP is fun to play user created levels and/or to make levels if that's your thing.

But, it's not a particularly good traditional, single player platformer as the gameplay is very rudimentary compared even to the best 2D platformers from 10-20 years ago.

But I don't think that's a bad thing. It's just the LBP is a creative game, you shoud only buy it if you either plan to make levels, or enjoy playing user created levels. If you buy it expecting the next Super Mario World in terms of a quality, traditional single player platformer you're going to likely be disappointed as the gameplay lacks the variety of powerups etc. of games like SMW, Yoshi's Island etc.
Limited options. ;)
Why would they play a game that sucks?
Dude, did you play it?
And you wonder why I give you shit.

Nothing else to play/lying to themselves/trophies.

I've seen it all.
