Who here has seen the DVD version of Return of the Jedi?

During the singing and dancng sequence in the Jabba's palace, Lucas added two comical CGI characters, and turned the scene into a Disney-like song sequence.

Those two CGI characters are just over the top, ruined the whole movie for me because it was so corny and stupid.

They were also acting for the camera, not the "audience" in the palace, and in one instance the character with the long mouth comically stetched out an put her lips up to the camera.

fuck you, Lucas. Burn in hell.

Well...you're not the first person to have realized how much the DVD editions suck. Forget about the current DVD, and go get a copy of the Star Wars Trilogy Definitive Edition (like this one), which is the best home version of Star Wars ever made, so far (until a DVD of the original cuts comes out). DVD quality, and not edits. Star Wars paradise. :)

While I don't agree with the changes he has made over the years, they are all very minor (except maybe the Han Solo/Greedo scene) so I don't really care...

Hasn't it been that way since 1997 when the special edition came out? I'm more upset about the changed ending for the DVD. Sabastian Shaw had been Anakin redeemd my entire life and now...
Hasn't it been that way since 1997 when the special edition came out?
They changed it even moreso than in 1997, and the 1997 version fucked it up pretty bad, what with Jabba the Hutt (who can barely move) waiting for Han Solo at the Mos Eisley spaceport.

The DVD ending for ROTJ was totally overhauled, they show fireworks and celebrations on a bunch of planets with no relation to the plot, iand it lasts a long time.

Who gives a shit. It is a scene that lasts what a minute??

I can't stand all you idiots who hate on Star Wars on the basis that you think you are too cool and hard to see things like Ewoks, etc.

Just shut the fuck up already cause Star Wars isn't a stupid mindless gore fest with fighting every other scene.

And worst of all...THEY TOOK OUT THE EWOK CELEBRATION SONG!!!:bs:

All of this begs the question, would any of us care if this was the way the movies came out originally? Would we be upset about Jabba at the dock if it had been in the original release? And so on, and so forth.

I wouldn't be mad about the Jabba thing if it was in the original, but I'm not mad about it now so it really doesn't matter to me. :)

Some CGI characters dancing for the camera, that are totally fake looking and out of place would bother me because it kills the whole mood of the movie.
No...worst of all they deleted like 20 sec's of dialog between Luke and Yoda in ep V.
Tell me more about this edit. I have the Definitive Collection DVDs as well as the "official, Special Edition" releases. Didn't notice anything was missing; maybe I need to take a closer look.

hmm...i'm trying to google for it but I know at least a line or two was cut while on Dagobah. I remember seeing it in the theater and wondering when that certain line would be said, but it never came. A long time ago I've came across others who noticed this too so I'm 99% sure...I'll get back to ya if I can find out anything more.

You're telling me that that one minute (or so) is bad enough to ruin the other two hours of movie?

The firework celebrations on different planets were in the 1997 theatrical release of VI, right? I remember seeing it then and thinking it was a nice addition.
You're telling me that that one minute (or so) is bad enough to ruin the other two hours of movie?
If they cut to an 80 year old man swinging his ballsack around like tubesock with eggs in it for a minute, then yeah it would ruin a 2 hour movie.

This is pretty much what Lucas has done.

Sure some of it is annoying fan-boy whining, but is it too much to ask to want the movie you watched and loved as a kid? Yeah I know it is Lucas's movies etc and he has free reign, but you are spending upwards of $20 a movie, it would be nice to get what you expceted. Now I don't think it ruins the movie, but it is still annoying to see it put in for arguably no reason at all.

I didn't realize that scene was an addition after the 97' updates. It really does feel a bit out of place but I don't feel it ruins the movie. The only thing that has ever ruined a starwars movie is jar-jar.

Right this was part of the 1997 release, but for the DVD, they added Naboo.

im going to have to agree... despite the modifications to the original 3, i found jar jar to be far more annoying then any of those... but hopefully lucas gets a clue and releases the originals on dvd

Well the next time Star Wars is on TV, watch it..and I mean..some local channel on TV, where they show the ugly assed unrestored 1977 edition. It sucks, it sucks balls. The obvious grain, the grit, the bad fake shadows, the matte marks around the fighters in the dogfighting scenes......I saw it in the theatres in 1977, but now its 2005...and I want to see things cleaned up.

Ok, so he cleaned it all up...added CGI this and that.....but its not the end of the freakin world. People talk like altering the original movie is like blashpehmy, but most of his edits correct some seriously fugly stuff. Some, like the Han/Greedo scene will TRULY be among the worst edits in film history......but lets get over it, its a 1/2 second long change ;) the majority of the changes are for the better.

Any change that gets RID of Ewoks is worth it in my book.

Yes: The scene in Jabbas palace where the Muppets were replaced with CGI Characters and the songs were changed *do suck*, it takes an otherwise adult-esque film down into the 8 year old range. But...its also just about the only scene in the entire movie where major suckage has been added.

Well....no, I guess I dont really dig the whole "anakin as a teenager ghost on Endor" crap either.....to include Hayden Christensen in the scene in place of the old dude who's name now escapes me is wrong, because then why is Obi Wan still an old fart? I ASK YOU, WHY!? :)

But the celebrations at the end work, and work well...you really get the feeling that the whole galaxy is celebrating the fall of the empire.

Phantom Menace is a pretty bad movie overall......but its not because of JarJar, its because of Jake Lloyd's abyssmal acting. IGN recently did a "10 worst Star Wars charcters" and JarJar was #2, second only to Jake Lloyd's Anakin. And I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree....

Jar Jar provided for some 8 year old comic moments...stupid, yes, but compared to Jake Lloyd...who's every scene was horrible, who's every word was spoken as if read off a cue card by someone who hadn' t yet mastered the english language......HE truly ruined Phantom Menace.

Jake Lloyd is going to be in therapy in 5 years or less. I don't understand why people can't enjoy Star Wars for what it is - mindless summer entertainment. I watched Eps I and II this weekend and yeah there are some cringe-worthy scenes but nothing worse than the crappy dialogue and childish c3po/ewoks that was all over the first trilogy. I like all 5 movies so far (haven't seen III yet) and I enjoy them all...

Actually, that would make it just about the best movie EVER.

Wow.

It isn't that bad, but it is bad.

A tubesock with eggs in it?

Supposedly, this is the explanation:

Obi-Wan and Yoda stayed on the light side of the Force all the time, so that's why they appear as they did when they died/became one with the force.

Hayden appears as Anakin because that was what he looked like before he joined the dark side. That, or you could say he died looking like that, and they brought him back to life as Darth Vader.

I think that it was good as is, that it should be left as is, but i was really pleased to see the inclusion of coruscant, as it seems the prequels, are all about the big city

I didn't know that explanation, thanks! :)

Personally I still enjoy the films no matter what George does to change them..sans, of course, the dreaded Greedo Shoots First.

When Han Shoots First, as he did in 77....that made Han A BADASS.....
Actually, that would make it just about the best movie EVER.
Damn, I knew you were into some wierd stuff, but this takes it

I don't mind the new movies, but there are some changes I do mind. Huge changes or additions to the movies should not have been done. I'm all for cleaning up the old video, the parts with Luke in the landspeeder look much better.

What I don't like is the addition of the completely CGI'd pictures of the cities. You are looking at a totally real scene of Mos Eisley that looks just as real as anything, then they cut to a fake looking computer generated city. It just doesn't fit the way the movie looks. The original movies were so good without CGI, why put it in now? I'm not even gonna get started on how retarded Jabba was in A New Hope.

Did George ever explain why he did that? I'd really like to hear from his mouth why he had to make Han look less than a scoundrel. Han Solo is my favorite character in any movie ever, and having him shoot Greedo without him knowing made him THAT much better.

I'm pretty sure nothing was cut there. They may have changed some of the lines but I don't think anything was cut.

His explanations for any change is "it's my movie I can do what I want with it". As I understand it he didn't want Han to come across as a stone cold killer so he changed it to Han defending himself.

I generally like the changes made to the DVD edition, except that music scene in Jabba's palace really pissed me off too, and I am not really a big Star Wars geek. It was just plain stupid. The one alien was rapping! Even the scene with Boba Fett macking on those chicks (in this same added musical scene) was pretty dumbass too, to me it made him look less cool. It didn't ruin the movie, but I was really disappointed that this stupid stuff was added in. I also didn't like the CGI animals added to EVERY outdoor camera angle in Episode IV in Tatooine that had to make some little braying sound. Didn't happen in just one angle. Every time the camera angle changed, you could see some stupid CGI animal in the background, and almost without exception it would make some braying sound. WTF! It looks like Lucas watched too much of that "Dinosaurs" sitcom before making these DVD editions.

I sort of agree, but they changed the end Ewok scene and song, which was what 11 year-old me marched out of the theater singing and skipping along to. I loved that frigging song. Lucas can do what he wants, but sometimes you can go too far trying to make things better.

My only complaint is that both versions aren't on DVD. Jedi is my favorite just because it's all ass-kicking and....the end. Or something.

I agree. I too liked the yub yub song, but what are we going to do? I don't like all of the changes Lucas made but I know what Star Wars was/is and no amount of crappy edits will change that for me.

Dear sweet lord I can't believe what I'm about to type.

I completely agree with you Scrubking.

Sure Jar Jar could be a little over the top at times, but can all of you honestly tell me you didn't get a little chuckle out of him at one point or another during episode 1? As far as episode 2, he's in there for maybe 5 minutes and episode 3 for even less.

Either you like Star Wars or you don't. If you like it, enjoy it and don't sit and find things to bitch about just for bitching's sake.

I thought Jar Jar was funny. Does he ever say why he was banished other than for being clumsy?

I know I can.

Just be sure to keep the original movies on VHS and keep your VCR in good working order. That or wait for Lucas to bring out the original on DVD to milk more money.

I really don't mind the changes he made. Some seem odd, but it does not ruin the entire movie. The added city scenes in RotJ includes all those places covered in all 6 movies. Ties the movies together. The extra buildings and stuff at Mos Eisley make the place seem more like a friggin spaceport than some backwoods, one plane (or ship), airport some where.

I agree with both you. It's fine to complain about the big things, but to find the smallest fucking details and bitch that it ruins the whole movie is just too fucking much. I enjoyed Jar Jar for what he was, he even gave me some laughs because of how stupid he is.

In my opinion Jar-Jar's clumsiness led to the downfall of the republic. He was just a pawn in a giant chess game.
In episode 2, Padme gave orders to Jar-Jar to elect Palpatine for Chancellor. From there, the dominoes just started falling, as we all know from watching Episode 3.
