Getting a BC PS3 for Christmas: What PS1/2/3 games to get?

I was given a strong hint tonight that I am getting a BC PS3 for Christmas, so I am trying to form a list of exclusives to buy eventually from PS1, PS2, and PS3.

So far my list is like this:

PS1:
Rainbow Six: Lone Wolf
Syphone Filter
The Divide: Enemies Within

PS2:
X-files: Resist or Serve(since it was cancelled for Xbox)
Ghost Recon: Jungle Storm
Rainbow Six 3
Beyond Good & Evil
Ico
Shadow of the Colossus
Resident Evil 4
SOCOM 2
SOCOM: Combined Assault
Splinter Cell
Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow
Splinter Cell: Double Agent

Purchased so far:
MGS Essential Collection
MGS4
SOCOM Confrontation

I'm posting this here, on the Ubi forums, and on my clan forums, so I'll update the list with suggestions from all 3 places.

Thanks for any suggestions!

I would say Shadow of the Colossus for ps2 is a must have along with Ico and Beyond Good and Evil. The later two can be a harder find though but very much worth it.

If you have a decent PC, you can get BGE on steam for cheap, easily. The game came out in 2003, so system requirements are pretty light.

I had BG&E for Xbox, and thought it was OK.

What is Ico about, and why is it so rare?

Also, what is Shadow of the Colossus about?

I should probably put that I'm mainly into shooters and stealth games with some adventure thrown in.(like Indiana Jones or Prince of Persia)

Yeah. If it's BC on the 360 then I can just pick it up cheap at a local store for my 360.

I'm mainly looking for exclusives to the PS platform since I already have a 360 and a gaming PC.(that I built)

MGS 2 & 3 are on PS2, right?

Also, if I get BG&E it'll be Steam or for PS2, whichever is cheaper.(I checked and it isn't BC for Xbox 360)

I'm probably going to take this list to Gamestop and see how much they are tomorrow since there's a B2G1 used sale this weekend.

Oh, I just remembered SOCOM. Which one is best for playing on PS3? SOCOM 3 or Confrontation or another one?

Hey dabamus since it's you asking ...for a BC PS3 my favorites are:

PSX: MDK, Fear Effect 1&2, Mechwarrior 2, and ...Legacy of Kain!

PS2: MDK 2, Ratchet & Clank series, God of War 1&2, Devil may Cry series, Black, SOCOM, Beyond Good and Evil, Metal Gear Solid, Legacy of Kain 2, and the Shadow of the Colossus

PS3: Resistance series, Uncharted, Prince of Persia, Tomb Raider, and the Ratchet & Clank series.

I just started playing Ratchet & Clank a few years ago and even I was surprised that I liked them. I always thought that they were going to be too kiddie for me but they ended up being great fun so I had to go back and buy them all . I played Tomb Raider II on PC many years ago and I can honestly say I didn't like it but TR: U is pretty fun with the extra eye candy;)

Thanks. I just changed MGS for PSX to MGS: Essential Collection for PS2. Makes it easier to look for all the games when they are together.

Which SOCOM games are the best ones, and have the most active online communities?

Also, for any cross platform games I will most likely get them on X360 just because that's the controls I'm used to at the moment.

Finally, I actually had Mechwarrior 2 and sold it in my last lowball because I forgot that I had a PSone at my dad's house in storage. :p

Ico is somewhat tough to classify, but it's most akin to a platformer (quite a few places classify them as action-adventure however, though the main element to each is to scale/cross/climb something). Shadow of the Colossus is somewhat of a platformer as well, but both have a few puzzle elements to them. The main draw (and why I love them so much) is the atmosphere. Shadow of the Colossus and Ico both have very little in the way of actual understandable words, and both put you in these huge, mysterious surroundings.

I'm assuming if you like stealth then you've played the Hitman and especially the Splinter Cell line of games. As for shooters, I really enjoyed Timesplitters. The second is on the Xbox though, unsure of its compatibility. I guess if you also haven't played them, you might enjoy the Resident Evil games, particularly the fourth, which plays quite a bit more like a third-person shooter.

For the PS3, Uncharted 2 sounds like it would be your cup of tea; quite a few action elements, and while stealth isn't necessary, it's fun to attempt. You can get the first one pretty cheap nowadays as well. Unsure on how good the shooters on the PS3 are, as most are multiplayer focused and I'm a single player type of guy, but I know the Resistance series as well as Killzone 2 are rated pretty well. I played the first Resistance and thought the campaign was nothing too special, but I didn't throw/drop the controller in disgust/boredom/anger. Any of the Ratchet and Clank games, either on PS2 or PS3, would be a good bet as well. Platforming + puzzles + shooting stuff.

I know you asked for shooters and stealth, but I'm going to give a bit wider spectrum of things, if that is ok. But I will be including some things from that genre, so hope this is helpful.

Get the MGS Essentials collection, since that will cover that series nicely. And it's only $20 at Amazon, so it's a great deal.

You can play the Final Fantasy games if that is your thing, with 7 and 10 and 12 apparently being considered the best. I'd argue 9 before any of those, followed by 12, and then 7 for pure "just to see what the big damn deal is" factor. (10-12 are on the PS2.)

PS1:

I personally dig Megaman Legends 1 and 2 on the PS1, but generally that's not a universal thing. It's Megaman shooting in third person 3D, but with a more adventure feel. Think Metroid, but a little more cutesy, and interaction with different NPCs in towns and stuff. You level up weapons, find hidden items, etc. Great fun.

If you like music games, Umjammer Lammy and Parappa the Rappa on the PS1 are great. I personally think Umjammer works the game style better, as it allows more freestyling. These are the granddaddies of the genre in some essence, and have beautiful art style.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is absolutely excellent, but you can grab it on XBLA.

Xenogears is a great RPG, but it's long and laborious. So it's really not for the fainthearted.

Vagrant Story is one of the most underrated games on the system in my opinion. It is gorgeous and has great design, and deserves to be played. It's like a turn based Zelda - you run into a room, there will be an enemy, and you bring up a "sphere of influence," depending on the range of your weapon, and choose a body part. You can upgrade your weapons and get to run around in a big massive spooky dungeon.

PS2:

Ico and Shadow the Colossus are must plays. Think of them as more artistic Zelda games - action adventures where you take down monsters and solve puzzles and the like. SotC is especially emotional and absolutely beautiful.

In the same camp as Ico/SotC is Okami, which is a more overt classic Zelda-like game, but with a jaw droppingly beautiful art style.

Katamari Damacy and its sequel We Love Katamari. Quirky, fun, hilarious, addictively fun simple gaming at its finest.

This should be a good start. You're about to get dozens of replies and suggestions.

Yes, I love the last gen Splinter Cell games. SC1 was the reason I got an original Xbox.

I'll pick up SC1 and PT for the bonus missions along with SCDA for PS2 for the bonus missions. Thanks for reminding me. :p

Actually, I've never played Hitman, although I should. I'll look around for Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. They sound like a combination of Assassin's Creed and Indiana Jones.(Emperor's Tomb)

Thanks Strell. I put MGS:E on there already. Better to pick them all up at once than hunt around for all of them seperately.

Also, it's shocking, I know, but I've never played any Zelda games or Metroid games even though I have an N64, and at one time had a GC.

Oh, it's not that shocking.

'Sides, Metroid was MIA from...what, 1994-2002? Something like that.

Have fun with the new system and games. There are some killer ones to play from over the years.

I got reccomended RE4 from the Ubi forums, so I'll try to pick that up too. What are the Uncharted games like?

Also, anyone here have reccomendations as to which SOCOM games are worth picking up for multiplayer?

Good to know that I'm not the only one who has missed the boat on Zelda. :p

I have never been into fantasy RPGs or anything like that, or RPGs in general except for Fallout 3, which I love on my PC.

I tried Oblivion for X360, but never really liked it.

I haven't played SOCOM in about a year or two so i'm not sure which communities are active but I liked Combined Assault the best because I could link it with my SOCOM: FTB on PSP and unlock extras.

Sorry, I didn't see that you didn't want cross platform PS games. I have all the Mechwarrior series but MW 2 was one of my favorites and my first "big robot" console game. I think you could probably get the old MW games for free for PC by now. I know that MW4 is going to be released free soon here:

Ok, thanks for the link!

If I get a mech game other than MechAssault 2, which I already have, it'll probably be Steel Battalion for the original Xbox just because it always looked really cool!

Uncharted is kind of shooter meets platformer (I seem to think everything is a platformer don't I?). It's basically RE4/Gears of War style over-the-shoulder third-person-shooter meets the adventure of Indiana Jones and (ESPECIALLY) Tomb Raider.

Ok. I think I'll stick with Indy, Gears, and RE4 for now.

How is the newer Indiana Jones game for PS2?(Staff of Kings or whatever it is)

What you never played the Zelda games!. I tried them at a friends house when they came out and I never really got into them either, I did like Dragon Warrior though.

The Uncharted series is pretty fun, it's an action/ adventure game like Indiana Jones and Tomb Raider. The series has puzzles to solve and treasures to find with a bit more shooting and ducking though.
I heard that the new Indy game is only worth buying for the inclusion of the classic Fate of Atlantis.
This is 100000000% correct.

As suggested long ago, they should have titled it "Fate of Atlantis (and some new stupid shit)."

Nope. Send me a link or something.

Dabamus: You could also try out the Red Dead Revolver game. It's a Western shooter, if you're a Good/Bad/Ugly fan.

Nope. Not a Good/Bad/Ugly fan. I remember seeing about Red Dead Revolver in OXM, I believe, but it never really caught my eye.

That FoA cover art is cool, but unfortunately it's for Wii. Is the FoA game on a seperate disc or something? Or on the same disc as the main game?

Link posted for ya
I'm not sure if Fate of Atlantis was included on the other versions but I bought it cheap on Steam a while back so that I could play it on Vista. ;)

I just go into my PS3 as well, and here's a list of my favorites. Also, Resistance 1 is a good game, but you'll hate it after you play Resistance 2, so play 1 first or don't play it.

Resistance 1+2
Uncharted 1+2
inFamous
Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time

Also, I haven't played the first 2 RaC games for PS3, but I've been playing the third one for a week straight and it's amazing. I can only imagine the first two will be the same. (The second one is PSN only in America.) Also, LittleBigPlanet is fun, it just didn't really grab me. There's no point to the game. And I personally love Ridge Racer 7 and Gran Turismo 5, but racing games are just my favorite. :)

Thank you, Mr. Duck. I think they are all BC for Xbox, so if I get them again, it'll be for Xbox though because that's what I originally played SoT and WW on.

A racer :whistle2:k I play Motorstorm, Wipeout, Kinetica, Burnout, FlatOut, NFS, Gran Turismo, Star Wars Racer, and ...Mario Kart. Which have you tried and which ones did you like?

Whoa dabamus, I thought you were in another thread  .Sorry for thread jacking, the ratchet and clank games are platform games but they are very fun and are definitely worth a try.

You up too late and confusing threads now? :p

I just reremembered my old PSone yesterday, and found it in a box with revolt for PSX, so I have one game already. :p

EDIT: Star Wars: Episode One Racer and Mario Kart 64 are two of the greatest racing games ever made IMO.
What is infamous about?

R&C are just platformers, right?
Partially. A big part of Ratchet and Clank is the weapon variety. Mostly they're just wacky types of guns/grenades/etc that you can upgrade to be more and more powerful. In that respect it seems an awful lot like a third-person shooter. There's a lot more emphasis on combat as opposed to other 'purer' platformers like Mario, or the newest Prince of Persia.

Infamous is supposed to be a superhero sandbox type game...a lot like any Spider-Man game from 2 onward, but with electricity powers. Definitely fun with the moral choices and what not, and a lot of the side missions have decent variety. Think of it as GTAIV if Niko Belic could shoot electricity out of his hands. Enemy variety was fairly meh, and I felt a few too many sections turned into a somewhat dull over-the-shoulder shooter, but it's entertaining and definitely provides bang for your buck in terms of length.

Infamous is a superhero game. In the demo, some sort of accident gives you electrical powers and you have to save the city from gangs and other mutants.
It seemed fun but I think I'll wait until it hits $20 since I already have too many super hero games.

:rofl:I'm typing in three threads ...and I am tired ;). I can tell because I always seem a second too late with the answers right now.

I have revolt too ..forgot about that one. I'm glad you like those racer's too, I own all the Mario Kart games and if they have them on the Wii VC then I'll probably get the older ones again :)

Thanks to you two for explaining infamous. I got GTAIV for PC just because of my OCD thing with Games for Windows Live games, and thought it was OK. The only GTA games I've played though are that one and GTA 1 and 2 for PC. I liked the top-down ones, but GTAIV was *meh* for me at least.

You've never tried Syphon Filter  get a PSP and that game, it has a huge online community.
The Syphon Filter series has been around since 1999 and you can buy most of the older ones on the PSN store.

Well, don't let the GTA reference deter you. I was bored to tears by GTAIV, but enjoyed inFamous. They just dropped the MSRP to $40, so I'm betting you could get it fairly cheap a ways down the line. There's also a demo on the PS Store that should do more justice than my attempts to connect it to other games.

And I figured Syphon Filter went without saying :p One of my top PS1 games, up there with MGS, the Final Fantasy trio, and Spyro/Crash.

Somewhat related, but directed@Oldschool:

Have you played this "The Divide: Enemies Within" game on the PS1? Apparently the developers literally tried to make a pseudo 3D Super Metroid. And actually somewhat accomplished this, if some reviews and various editorials I've found are to be believed. I found it during one of those "obscure games that rock/best games you've never played" types of articles.

Given your avatar, this seems like a fair question to aim at you.
Is Syphon Filter only for PS1? Or were there PS2 and PS3 games too?
1-3 were PS1 titles.
Omega Strain, Dark Mirror (port of PSP title) were on the PS2.
