Getting a new old card... 256 or 512?

I know, I know... there's great cards coming in the next few months but that's exactly why I don't bother getting the latest and greatest with graphics cards- too expensive for me to keep up with even if the $250 8800GT is a hell of a deal.

Anyways, I'm going to upgrade my X850XT to a X1900XT (a used one). Yes, I do plan to play newer games like Crysis (it ran great on my 850XT so I'm not too worried about performance) as well as Source Engine games.

Now, my question is, should I get the 256MB or 512MB version? I usually plan at 1360x768 (on my HDTV) or 1680x1050 (on my PC monitor) if that matters.

I'm thinking 256MB but I heard that many games games make better use of more memory and that many newer games greatly benefit from it.

That card better be cheap to warrant such a marginal upgrade (compared to the 8800GT).

But 256 will do fine. There aren't really any games that are going to take advantage of the extra memory at the kind of setting that you'll be able to get.

Agreed, I hope you are getting a really good deal. You're going to be more limited by the card than the ram.

I'm surprised you considered the performance on Crysis acceptable on your existing card, it stresses my 8800gts 320mb to the max.

Yeah, I can find used ones at the TH forums for $100 or less so it's much less than $250 8800GT.

And Crysis ran great but it was on my HDTV so it was only running at 1360x768 and on medium- no fancy features (since the X850XT is a SM2 card). I guessing you played it at much higher specs than I did. It was running at about 25-30 fps which is enough for me.

I would buy another card but all this crap about the new DX10.1 spec and ATI's new card are why I figured I might as wait until next summer before a major upgrade.

Guess I'll go with 512 then.

Get the 512MB. The 512MB will SERIOUSLY help you out when you play at those high resolutions. And the extra Video RAM will help you out with bigger textures...
