Getting back into RPGs: Maybe a little advice?

I'm getting back into RPGs, and wanted to ask some advice.

Should I used FAQs, or does that really ruin the game? I'd hate to get 10 or so hours into the game, and find out I've been leveling up some useless abilities or something.

Sorry if this question is vague, but it's been a while since I've play a JRPG. Here's the titles I'm going to get into, if that helps:

Shadow Hearts 1 & 2
Final Fantasy 7
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time
Chrono Cross

Thanks for any advice.

Oh, and I DO know that if I get tired of the game, I need to just take a break from it and come back later, rather than sell it, cause I always regret that decision.

Well..there is nothing wrong with using a faq on jrpg because they tend to have lots of "one time" missable items or abilities like final fantasy 7 monster skills. It's a bitch finding out later that you missed a skill and want to restart another 20 hours for it.I'm still pissed off that missed a romancing stone for arc the lad 1 and missing a job quest in arc the lad 2.Afterward it was a big turn off and I stop playing.Right now,I'm not a pure completionist anymore because it wastes too much time completing it and since i'm a cager,I have a huge backlog to undergo.

Just letting you know,Shadow Heart 1 have a misable spell near midway of the game.If you miss that spell, you miss one of the ultimate spells for Yuri.Shadow Heart 2 all secrets can be obtain near end of game and can be revisted.Chrono Cross I don't even remember that game anymore.I got it during launch date and hate it.Never play Star Ocean Till end of time

always go to any message board and ask is there any "misable item" or "one time item" in this game?It will save your time in long run, most of these item are generally good

I start playing the games on my own, only when I get stuck do I consult a faq. I used to be completely anti-faq, and want to play thru on my own. But as an adult with adult time constraints, I find myself more willing to go right to a faq when I get stuck rather than doing the old 'retrace your steps and talk to everyone twice' method. I dont need my games to last for weeks and months anymore.

For most games, unless you're an obsessive completionist, FAQs won't be necessary unless you're stuck somewhere. Rarely is the way you build up your characters going to drastically change the game for you.

It depends. If your not getting stuck, do you really need the "missable" items? I've missed quite a few items so far in FF XII playing through, and I don't feel underpowered in the game. A lot of time I wonder if the effort for some of these items is really wroth it (I think they are thrown in for those "hardcore" gamers that have the time/inclination to get them).

Though I like FAQ's when I get stuck, I would try to avoid message boards about the game. Older RPG'ers usually figure that everyone knows the plot twists of the game, so they are terrible at marking spoiler (or do something stupid like "(name huge plot twist) spoiler)" in title. So, if you don't want the plot ruined, you may want to avoid those wherever possible (Gamefaqs usually has some spoiler free FAQ's for most RPG's).

One thing I never understood about RPG gamers is those who are completionists.

Each to his or her own, I suppose, but I just never could understand people who must have every item, do every quest, or level every character to the max level. Is there some appeal to being "complete"--is it fun, or is it simply OCD?

There are far too many good RPGs out there to waste time maxing stats, gathering every little item, etc. I suggest just playing through each game without any help and moving on.

some people just like to COMPLETELY ''flip'' their games.
