Hi Cag,

I really need some assistance. Im getting a new motherboard and i5-2500K for Christmas. I know I will have to do a clean install of windows 7. My problem is that Im using the harddrive that came with my HP desktop. When I bought this computer a year ago I was not given a copy of windows 7. Is it possible to create windows 7 64bit disc or do I have to buy a retail copy? Im not 100% sure but Im reading that its probably not good to create a regular recovery disc because it will copy the bios of the old mobo. Im not a PC expert and Im learning as go so if anyone could help me make this process as smooth as possible I will really appreciate it.

Thanks

If you bought the copy of Windows that is on your current computer, you can have the license transferred. If it was pre-installed on a store bought computer though, I'm pretty sure you'll have to buy a new retail copy.

risks aside, since win 7 came with your pc id just bit torrent it, rip to a cd and use the keygen program that came with the torrent which pretty much uses public licensees(prob close to the same code that came with your HP version hehe).

id also get more hard drives too. i dont see how people use just one hard drive. like 500- 1t thats like just for the os now. then ya got another for program files like games. lastly there are external bays for stuff like video editing, back up, ect which make it easy to deal with large files like that without cluttering and slowing down your other files

you also got to know how a hard drive work. i'm not really good at explaining it but if your os or another program needs to do something and you're in a game or another program thats using the hd then the hard drive is going to be slowing down the system because the read head is looking at 2 or more areas spread out across the drive.

Thanks for the advice. I think I will try downloading the iso files and use the key that I found with jellybean key finder. A friend also gave me his code for windows professional. I called both windows and hp support and they said I should try using the code I have before I buy windows. I hope this works because that extra $100 could go towards something else like an extra harddrive. Opinions and suggestions are still welcome. If anyone has any experience with the method I just described let me know if it works. Thanks!
