Both XP and 2003 have this new feature that allows you to alter how the operating system runs applications. As you are probably not going to be doing much server work, 2003 would be swatting a fly with a sledge-hammer. You probably would want to upgrade to XP (even though, as I understand it, 2003 is more robust and reliable). Here's how you make older games work:

  • Go into the directory which contains the app you're trying to run
  • Right-click on the executable and select "Properties"
  • The usual Properties diaglog box will appear, but with a critical addition. Click on the tab labeled "Compatibility"
  • Check the box inside the section entitled "Compatibility Mode". If you're running XP, you will then get a list of available modes you can run your app in:

    - Windows 95
    - Windows 98 / Windows ME
    - Windows NT 4.0 (Service Pack 5)
    - Windows 2000
    - If you're running Windows 2003, you get an additional "Windows XP" setting in the dropdown list
You can also change the screen resolution to 640x480 fixed size with 256 colors to avoid any palette problems if you prefer. If you want to run DOS games, the Windows 95 setting is likely to be your best bet.

Or you can download Dosbox.

It's a litte more difficult to use than just changing some options around, but I'll assume that by running DOS based games that you can get through the command prompts.

Amazing program, btw. I was worried I'd need to build a 486 DX100 computer just to run all my favorite adventure games. :)

I want to add that DFend gives you a nice GUI for DosBox. Nice to have quicker access to any settings needing tweaked, and it makes it more accessible to a lot of people new to DosBox.

omg where did u buy/download this game from. Ive been looking for it forever, that demo i played 10 years ago still holds a special place in my gaming alter ego's heart

Yeah, Interplay put out some good Star Trek games in the early 90's. Judgement Rites and A Final Unity were good too. I've seen them on eBay once in awhile, and they don't go for too much either.

Holy crap Dfend rocks! I know it says it is supposed to be used with Dosbox 0.62, but it works with 0.65 just fine.

There's a new version that's a beta that I didn't mess with (kept with the traditional V2), but it works really well for what I've tested with it.

Come, Hoagie! We have an evil tentacle to stop!
That reminds me. I gotta find a copy of Day of the Tentacle.
HAH. I was just searching for a copy on eBay. Looks like I'll have to pay 30-40 for it, which kinda sucks.

I used to own it, but I can't find the CD. I have a ....copy for the meantime, but I'm going to track down (hopefully) a complete/boxed copy soon.

ATTN: Lucasarts. Just emulate the stupid games onto the DS already. They've got ScummVMDS, how long could it possibly take? They could release them as budget titles for 20 bucks ez. DOTT, Monkey Island, Loom, Indiana Jones....

Sigh. It would be heaven to have those portable.

No more f*cking star wars.....

I bought the Star Trek: 25 anniversary, Star Trek: Judgement Rights and a Starfleet Academy demo as a compilation circa 1999 at ebgames. They are great games if you can snag them and manage to run them - kind of like having a 4th and 5th seasion of the original Startrek series. The original actors do all the voice work and the stories are written by star trek writers.

I really don't want to get in trouble, but if you need old PC games (and I mean old, don't bother if you're looking for something before, let's say 1997) go ahead and Private Message me.

Also, don't bother messaging me if you can find that stuff on Amazon.com and/or Ebay for the same price (or under) as any new game (i.e. $50). But as is the case with Space Quest Collections, if you want the damn box, you need to shell out at LEAST $150 for one. I've considered selling mine, but I love the damn games too much.

I don't want to get into piracy discussions here, but if I will say one thing: LucasArts is guilty as hell for not keeping the old franchises available. I didn't come to the states until '96, and even THEN it was already "not easy" to get legitimate copies of old floppy games.

managed to snag kings quest II and monkey island III boxed with the plastic wrapping still on them on ebay...none of that crappy minnesota remakes either, go me!

I'm pretty sure there's been mention of it on these forums a couple times, but King's Quest, Space Quest, Police Quest, and Leisure Suit Larry are all supposed to get compilation-style rereleases, I assume already XP compatible. All the release dates I heard sound like placeholders, but it might be worth waiting to buy as long as you're not after vintage packaging.

And MarioColbert's right, Lucasarts needs to just license ScummVM and do a quick dumping of all their old adventure games onto one DVD for the best piece of shovelware since Interplay's multitude of rereleases.

Actually, being that I'm NUTS ASS about SQ and LSL series, I have some bad news: Vivendi cancelled the deal. Yes, I KNOW it's still available for preorder on Amazon.com, but that's vapor as of February (coule be March) of this year.

EDIT: I went to look for the URL with the confirmation of the cancelled news, only to not find it at all anymore. I do not remember exactly who wrote on it, but adventuregamer, moby games, and the abandoned gamesroom are all clean of this. So, I guess you can take this as a "rumor," since I can not back it up. The fact that they've been pushed back over 2 years, with each "push back" announcement coming in EXACTLY at the previous proposed "release date," I suggest you don't hold your breath, for you will suffocate.

Truly sad news, actually, since those games were some of the best adventure games ever made, although I suppose it's still between two competing monopolies (LucasArts vs. Sierra On-Line). I have grown up with Space Quest I, it was literally the first game that I considered MINE and that _I_ played, despite the fact that I knew no English, and could barely operate the god damn dictionary at the age of 5 or 6. Despite that, I managed to beat Space Quest III "from scratch" at a whooping age of 10, using only English to Russian (and Russian to English, of course) dictionary at my disposal.

I tell you this, so you all will know: I am the greatest human being in the universe. None of you can as much as touch me (except for Strell, who ownz my ass at Guitar Hero).
