God damn, I have $4,000

It could be $6,000 if I sold a couple extra things. It sort of snuck up on me, before Christmas I only had $2,800. It's in a savings account I started for a new TV (I had planned on a ~$2k TV) but I'm having second thoughts. I definitely don't want a $4k TV and it'd be a shame to only spend half of the account.

If you found $4,000 (or $6,000) today, what would you spend it on?

Maybe I should hire some smart grad student to take all my tests for the next 2 years. Coast into Boalt with a >3.95... that's probably illegal.

How would you legally spend $4,000?

I'd keep it in a savings account or put it in a Roth IRA. But if I was forced to spend $4,000 I guess I'd get a huge ass new TV and a new 5.1 surround system.

I would spend it on dental work, a newer car(I feel like Al Bundy saying this, but I have a 91 Dodge)and save whatever was left.

When I say newer car, I mean I might move up to a 1995 or possibly as 'new' as a 1999. I'm not picky when it comes to cars. To me, as long as it gets me from point a to point b reliably, that's ALL that matters.

I would also put it in a Roth IRA.

However, if I were forced to spend it, I'd, uh, I don't know. I'd probably give half to my brother, and spend the rest on essentials, then give the rest to friends.

I would do the same thing Maklershed said. I would keep it in the saving or put it into some sort of IRA. If I did not do that and I did spend it then I would use it to pay off my credit cards or for a down payment for a house. If I had my own place or was not looking to move out and had not credit card payments or other bills that I could pay off I would buy a TV and a really nice sound system.

I'd take a little of that and get a Canon XSi or something absurdly expensive that I'd never buy under standard circumstances, like the newest Photoshop. Then I'd put the rest towards an '08 Malibu.

$4,000 worth of GI Joe Cobra Troops.... MWAHAHA!

Yes, I honestly would waste it all on toys. Can always get more shelves for stuff too... think my DVD Collection overtook my couch.

You should invest in storage space.

4k?

Legal? Yes
Hygienic? No

Only if they're crisp brand new bills, otherwise who knows what kind of trace might be on them.

I would probably just buy a $1000 tv and save the rest, maybe invest in the market, so when it does rebound you'll make off like a bandit.

The only thing I can think to buy right now would be a new computer monitor. Normally I would just save it but if I had to spend it I can't think of anything else. I'm not even good at pretending to lavishly spend that money. When you think about it, $4000 isn't really that much.
I was curious so I googled it: 4,000 $1 bills weighs 8.6 lbs, about the same as a gallon of milk.
That's not nearly enough, better to measure its weight in pennies.

I sure as hell wouldn't spend it all. I wouldn't even get the $2k TV. I wouldn't spend more than a few hundred to $1k and save the rest.

But if I were in your position where $4k just kind of springs up on me then I probably wouldn't also be in a situation where I actually needed the money, so I dunno how stupid I would be with it. I'd probably buy electronics, video games, and guitar shit. I don't usually like blowing money on one huge thing (and I already have a car that works pretty well).

Okay scratch that then. Just cash it out and keep it in a briefcase and carry it everywhere. Handcuff the yourself to the briefcase as well. Always where a suit and one day suspiciously leave the briefcase by the corner of 5th and Broadway, inside the telephone booth.

I'd wait 2 months until the economy gets really bad then use 2K as a down payment on a really nice car (the auto industry as a whole is getting really desperate). The rest I'd stash away in case I lost my job.

a Crush Card Virus for my Yu-Gi-Oh! deck (~$260), put a $1000 in the bank with the $1000 thats already there from car accident I was in, and then spend the rest on classes.

If I had that much and I was in your shoes I would spend $1,000-$1250 on a nice tv/sound system. The rest would be saved for more important things such as random payments or for when you could really use it.
I'd spend it all on booze & hookers. ;)
This guy knows what's up. Personally, I'd add drugs into the mix, but still.

Donate it to Child's Play, sweep the raffle prizes, sell that stuff, and double your money. Everyone wins!

I'd pay 2nd rate assassins to kill z-list celebrities. Then I'd write a book about it and sell the rights to Miramax so that they could make a movie about it. The cast would be made up of other z-list celebrities. David Hasselhoff will star as Orlando Jones. My cut of the movie will be another $4,000 that I will use to buy a lifetime supply of easy whores, cheap vodka, and wendy's chicken sandwiches.

If you don't have at least 3 months of living expense saved away, then put it into a money market account. Otherwise, put it in the stock market if you don't need the money for a few years. Seriously.

i'd be injecting cashflow into my business.

but if i was a punk student still, i'd roll nearly all of it into the stock market and use the rest to upgrade my laptop.

seriously 4k now in the stock market could see 4x or 8x returns if you asked the right people for help.

I'd buy a car + cheap gas for the future.
Is 4k supposed to be a lot of money?
When you don't have a job it is.

I'd put half of it into savings (be it an IRA, Stocks, mutual funds, whatever).
The other half I'd use to buy whatever for the next few months. If something came up (a good deal) that I would normally pass on because I didn't have the cash or couldn't really justify the purchase, I'd use the money on that and make a relatively guilt free purchase.
