God of War 2 (PS2) $44 (pre-order) shipped at Amazon

nice deal... too bad i just spent my game money on the lost planet collectors edition. any idea how long this is 'til? i would love to get in on this, but i got to get a puppy some shots tomorrow.

I was under the impression that all PS2 games were capping out at $39.99 anymore.

Of course, if any title changed that recent trend, it would be God of War.

Very very tempting... I'm going to wait and see if the major retailers offer it for less than $40 though before I bite. God of War is Top 5 material so I have high hopes for the sequel.
How can you be tempted if it's guaranteed to be 20 dollars by Christmas?
Because.. that's 11 months from now?
Because.. that's 11 months from now?
Totally agree... there are three types of CAGers. First one likes to jump on new releases as long as some incenses are offered, like a few bucks cheaper, no tax/shipping. The second type likes to score games at discounted prices (like 50% or more).

Of course, the last type is the combination of the two. i.e. for some games, you jump on it right away, as long as it's cheaper than most places. While for other games you'll till they are dirt cheap.

This don't count the extreme anal CAGers (i guess, by definition, all CAGers are anal to some point).
It's big Title & it should hit over 1,000,000 mark quicky and it'll drop down $20 after 4-6 months.
You'd think so, but somehow I doubt that. If it sells that well it will probably stay at $50 for even longer. It took the first God of War over a year to become a greatest hit.

Sony should've clearly pointed out that all first party games retail price would be $39.99....except the ones they know would really sell, for $49.99.

They knew the first God of War was going to be a success, and thus saw no reason why they shouldn't (double negatives yay!) increase the price. I'm quite certain Gran Turismo 4 was $49.99 as well.
I think that boxart is for the PAL version of GoW.
That would suck. I don't want the lame cover art shown on amazon.com

Still, as long as the game is good I guess it's not that big of a deal.
I think that boxart is for the PAL version of GoW.
It's not because of two reasons:

http://www.1up.com/media?id=3167969

On the top right it says NTSC which means it can only be played in North America and Japan (I don't know where else uses NTSC format).

Second, on the bottom left is shows a rating of M in which the rating system like this is only in America (don't know about Canada or Mexico) and ESRB is a game rating company based in America.

So to summerize in one sentence: that is the GoW II American box art.
I think that boxart is for the PAL version of GoW.
Why does it say NTSC on the cover then?

Interesting note: the boxart says "two disc set". The only other non-RPG I've ever seen for PS2 with more than one disc was Devil May Cry 2 and we all know how that turned out. Anyway, hopefully more discs will equal more gameplay, rather than more FMVs (Xenosaga, I'm looking at you).

Actually, they've said the second disk is a "bonus" disk, with interviews, etc. Supposed to be a lot more extra content than they put on the first one, and that was a lot.

Glad I locked this down at $38.99 during Amazon's $5 off screw-up the other night. ;)

Then you missed out on several other two-disc non-RPG games ;)

Soul Calibur II (PS2 version)
Zone of the Enders
Cy Girls
King of Fighters 00/01
King of Fighters 02/03
Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence
Onimusha Dawn of Dreams

Those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head in my collection. I'm certain there's more.

From the IGN review:

The first is that God of War II will not only be playable on the PlayStation 3, of course, but that it will run at a true HD resolution of 720p. We're unsure as of yet whether or not we'll see additional texture detail because of this, but we'll update this section of the review when we can test it.

Looks like I'll be getting this one (probably borrowing).. I'm not too into God of War type games, but this game looks amazing from the pictures I've seen. I'm going to check gametrailers.com right now.

Interesting deal. Although, I'll never play it until a year after it goes GH. I still have the original GoW in my queue.

Waiting for $14.99 w/ BB GGC!

Yea but how many of those are actually 2 discs and not just demos? Of those that i own, only Onimusha actually had game content on the other disc.

Right on. I was gonna reply but you took the words right out of my keyboard(?). Just wanna add that Cy Girls was bad so you only proved my point. Zone of the Enders included a demo so it doesn't count as extra game; King of Fighters had separate games on separate discs like Growlanser Generations so that doesn't count, either. Ditto for MGS 3: Subsistence which I have. I never played Soul Calibur II so I don't know about that. And lastly, you were right about Onimusha; I forgot about that. Anyway, the point is moot now since it seems that the second disc is for bonus content anyway. I have a question for Pookymeister, I never played Onimusha 4, is it a really long game or is it more movie than game like Xenosaga II?

I did pre-order from Amazon last month, even though it will probably go on sale @ CC, and it will eventually go GH. I enjoyed the original, so it's worth it to me, even for $44...
Zone of the Enders included a demo so it doesn't count as extra game
Well, you have to remember that Zone of the Enders came with the demo to Metal Gear Solid 2 -- so technically, you could say that the game came free with the $50 demo. ;)

As for God of War II, this would be one of the few titles, last-gen or next-gen, that I'd consider paying full retail price for up-front, but I have so much stuff in my queue right now that I'll probably have to wait. I'm also spoiled because I got my PS2 late in the game, and the original God of War at $20 gave me an unbeatable awesome-to-price ratio.

That makes 2 of us!

I say 5-8 months before it drops to at least $29.99. Should be $20 by xmas which is fine with me. I still have GOW sitting in my shelf brand new unopened! (too busy with FEAR, Gears of War, Top Spin 2, Call of duty 3 etc....)

I don't know, It took GOW 1 almost a year to be a greatest hit.

I'd say that's pretty wishful thinking. It'll certainly go GH eventually, so if you want to wait more power to you - but I'd say expecting it to get there this year is a pipe dream.

I'm not certain why you think I was arguing with you, much less about that point. You said you'd only seen one two disc non-RPG PS2, and I suggested some additional ones.

It's a fair summation that the only games that shippd on two discs during the PS2 dvd era were either games filled with FMV/voice-acting (RPGs, Onimusha DoD) or games that wanted to do it to create a sense of 'value' or novelty (Cy Girls, DMC2)...
Heh sweet mine was $38.99 due to the big Wii system screwup. $5 was automatically taken off (I had forgotten all about it)
wii system screwup?

I just beat GoW 1 last month :) I bought that one for like $25, should have waited for GH version prolly

love the game but yeah my Q is stacked. Been trying to finish Vagrant Story before getting back to my stack of untouched XBOX1 games :(
wii system screwup?
Yes the preorder was a pretty big mess. I preordered mine the first day they made preorders available back in September but people who preordered theres in November 1-2 weeks before it launched and even people who straight up bought the system off the site on launch day were getting theirs sent first. There was a whole thread of pissed off CAGs including me who complained to amazon and most got $5 off their next order, and this was my next order since then.

OK, my bad. The way you wrote your post, it seemed that you were making a list of good 2-disc games as opposed to DMC2. Just a misunderstanding, I guess.

Anyway, thank goodness for blu-ray, now we won't have to worry about multi-disc games [/sarcasm].

Nah, it's okay....

Though I must say, even though I have one of the bigger PS2 collections on IGN, I'd be ~nuts~ to put Cy Girls on a list of good games ;) It's only notable for being cheap, and on two discs...

Shame about the 720p thing actually not being true--darn IGN's factual reporting.
