goddamn that tape that seals game/dvd cases

I am very picky about the appearance of my dvds and video games. Not in the "cant have greatest hits or gotta have special collectors edition" aspect...just simply the "no bends, no rips, no damage what-so-ever" aspect. It pisses me off when i buy a dvd or game and open it up only to find that the disc "clip" is broke into pieces. But more so then anything else...it pisses me off when i take the plastic off and then try to take the tape off the sides....then low and behold...the artwork is hanging out of the plastic (part of the dvd/game case) and the tape rips off some of the artwork. This also happens a lot with dvds that arent in the plactc cases, but the cardboard cases. The tape almost always takes off some of the art work, leaving it with white spots/streaks/etc. Call me picky, call me anal, call me what you want...but with all of the damn money we put into games/dvds, we have the right to want them to be perfect...at least until we screw them up ourselves. So my question is...does anyone else have this problem? If it pisses you off, do you return the game/dvd for a new one? If so, do you tell them why you're returning it? Let me know, because I personally am about to start returning a lot of shit until what I buy is perfect.

I have the same problem, not very frequently, but I do have it. I just suck it up since I assume that a store clerk or manager would be like 'what are you beilng so anal about?' Good luck!

i mostly suck it up as well...but today it happened with Mystic River, Playmakers, and Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance....it kinda takes the fun out of buying something new

Ouch, a threefold painful experience. This situation may actually be worth pursuing. I suppose we shall see what the CAG comradery shall post for a possible fix!

I'm with you Trust. I too am anal about my cases. Want 'em to look new forever.

My buddy started using markers to cover up single discolorations. He would color in the top, sides and bottom to make them look almost good as new. It doesn't work all the time though....

I also get somewhat irritated when stuff like this happens, but not as much as I used to. What I'm wondering is how many of us don't lend out games/movies/cds because we are too worried that they will get messed up? ;)

haha....i hate lending out games/dvds....9 out of 10 times something is screwed up when you get 'em back, if you get 'em back....and whenever i lend them out, the person who screws 'em up doesnt even notice that they screwed 'em up...if i screwed somebodies stuff up in the slightest bit, i always offer to replace it...i once let a friend borrow nba street 1 and 2 dvds...his dog chewed them up...i went to his house and they were literally chewed up....

at one point, i literally had a "checkout" book...due to my brothers, sister, parents and friends borrowing too much at once

I hate misperfections too. I just bought Castlevania: Loi from EB (B&M), and the guy pulled out a display copy. I say I want it new, and he gives me the speech on how it's nevr played, blah blah.. I just take it anyway, and go outside to open it to make sure its not used. (Since this is EB) Everything looks fine, and in my car, on the back of the box is a little rip in the plastic. I had places to go, like best buy (Full of morons who don't know what a classic nes game is, needless to say I still don't have the legend of zelda) and the nba finals to watch, so I decided to just return it next time I go there. They had better give me a new box.

Yeah, but the guy who works there knows me pretty well. He should give me a new box. But yesterday there was some wierd guy there. >_>

Always ask for a discount on "new" display copies. They may knock about 5 dollars off. I've only tried this once and it worked at a KB. EB probably wouldn't do it though.

i hate when a little cousin of mine asks to borrow games of mine, but i've seen the way they treat theirs and i dont want my games to get screwed up, so i say no.. .. then i look like an asshole

That happened to me on my Sanjuro Criterion edition :(

btw, Mystic River kicks ass. I dont get ur feminine side joke bruce.

I agree with the boxart getting damaged because it's hanging out ever so slightly and by taking off the tape, it gets ruined. Just happened to me the other day when I opened up Siren. Pissed me right off.

I think he was thinking of "Mystic Pizza".

I don't have that problem because I leave those tapes on the cases, instead I carefully use a razor blade to split the tape. That's why I can't really trade for even a complete ps2 or xbox game because 99% of the time people will take that off. gamecube is ok :)

A checkout book isn't such a bad idea. If I can help it I don't lend out anything but my GBA games to friends.

I stopped lending out CDs when my friend (I use that term very very loosely) went out of his way to put my discs data side down. WTF is that... some people have no respect.

I refuse to lend out games/dvds to anyone but one friend. He is just as anal about his games so I know they will be taken care of. My wife used to let people look at my collection and loan shit out until I blew up about it. She didn't know what the big deal was but damned if she doesn't now....

I let my friend borrow the first 2 Mummy movies and that same thing happened. Still haven't been replaced.....

I'm the same way. My copy of Kingdom Hearts had some of the artwork stuck under the Sony tape, and because the artwork has that cool silver finish it took some off...I was pissed.

I used to have serious peoblems with the folks at the local EB back in the day. I'd buy a Saturn game and if the case had a crack in it I'd demand a better copy. Nowdays I don't shop at B&M Eb's, there's just too much "handling" of games -and that new display copy stuff is bullsh*t. Now I just go to Fry's or TRU where they don't give a rats ass about a game and put it in a clear security box and walk away.

And He paid 20 bucks more for a nice looking case, and he lived broke but happily ever after. Amen

Once I cut a slit along the crease of the case I can usually remove the tape slowly without any damage if the boxart is sticking out. After a few bad experiences I learned to check for that 1st. As for the clips that hold the disc being broke, I usually take those back to the store because they will only lead to the disc getting easily scratched sometime in the future.

Damn Right.
(except for the fact Fry's is cheaper than EB ever will be)

My problem with the labels is that there's no perfect way to remove them. Take them off too fast, and they rip away some of the artwork, but take them off too slowly, and they leave residue behind. Granted the residue isn't that difficult to get off, it would still be nice if the labels could just come off cleanly!

I bought the Terminator 2 DVD with the metal case, and when I pulled it out of the metal case it ripped up the clear plastic on the spine of the DVD box, and did a little bit of damage on the front and back. Its not to bad, but Im never putting it back into the metal case again.

Same here...the metal case is cool and all, but honestly...

Here's the way to get the stickers off:

Take a hairdryer on low setting and heat the sticker up as you try to peel it off. The glue will melt enough for you to remove the sticker without damaging the package.

Works every time.

I hate sticker residue and the damage it causes to box art, stores take the games back but it's still a huge hassle. For this reason, cartridge gaming was really nice.

What pisses me off the most about those damn stickers is that if they just put them on the side it would all be avoided!

DAMN YOU!!! Just put the sticker on the side and I wouldn't have to worry about ripping up the insert you stupid mofos!!!!
