You don't have to sign into Steam, Origin, or any other client - that also often acts as DRM.
Or, you don't have to input a code and activate your game via some server b/c the publisher and/or dev' threw some garbage like Tages or Securom in your way.
Nice. Too lazy to participate in the contest, but I played this game and the original back in the day--really terrific superhero strategy games with great stories and fun Silver Age-style characters.
Has anyone played the older GOG version of Pirates! as well as the newer Steam version? Is there a good reason to play both or is the newer version the same game play/story (plus some additional stuff) with updated graphics?

I don't know whether this counts but I played Pirates! when it first came out and I also played the re-release. My recollection was that the original was a lot more fun and interesting than the remake. The remake actually seemed to have a lot fewer things to do than the old version.

I haven't played GOG's version, but I did play the hell out of Pirates! and Pirates! Gold back in the day. The remake that is on Steam is very similar, with changes that you might expect with a remake done over a decade later.

Thanks for the input! I have Pirates! on my GOG wishlist and every time it goes on sale I wonder why I should buy it if I already have a version on Steam. Thought I should finally ask.
I think the new Pirates version is worth playing. I liked the original and the gold one... and I also liked the newer. I know it's a bit shallow and repetitive, but it was good enough.
Took me about 3 full playthrough wins (being the #1 pirate 2 times and got close another time). It did get old fast and the upgrades to stuff where few and far between. The dancing got annoying, and yeah generally just became very repetitive. I did increase the difficulty each subsequent time....but agreed it becomes samey after just a few times through.
I played (and beaten) the original Pirates, Pirates Gold, Pirates remake on PSP, and Pirates remake on PC. I remember the PSP one being better than the PC, however. The dancing didn't fit very well. I thought the PC one was the easiest. Took me one try to win. I remember smaller ships like the Sloop being a lot more powerful in the earlier versions. In the remake, you just load up on like 40 cannons with grape shot, and you pretty much always win.
Erm, besides the fact that this GIF is borderline racist, does anybody else think that we've driven this particular GIF into the ground with 3 uses of it in less than 3 days?
...Or am I entirely off my trolley, here? (<<< Even though this was a rhetorical question, weall know the answer to this, do we not?)
And just because I know that somebody is going to ask; NO, I haven't hit the bottle tonight... yet.

It's borderline racist, in that it perpetuates a particular stereotype of a certain culture. If you need me to explain this, then you're a failure as a human being, as well as a decent-minded CAG (we all know this type of person doesn't exist, so I apologize for insulting my fellow CAGs for the worst insult you can give a denizen of the Net: "decent.")
Anyway, all facetiousness aside, I'd rather not get into a politically/socially charged discussion about what is and isn't considered "racist" by different people, because we all know the ONLY place where that can possibly lead:
I appreciate the kind of person whom can *not only* notice the obvious, but also ruin a good god-awful funny, by spelling out the joke to kiddies who don't understand (thinly veiled and poorly toned) sarcasm.
MrNinjaSquirel, might I give you some advice? If you with the Talking Rock, prepare to get a TRULY old-school (i.e. not all that offensive and rather self-deprecating) insult.

While that may be true, to most people it's just a meme. I could just as well say "ain't nobody dot time fo dat" without any picture and people would take it the exact same way. You can call me a failure if it makes you feel better, but I know racism and I know people reading more into a joke than they have any reason to.

Once again, I wasn't being serious about it being "racist", although the whole "perpetuating the stereotype" thing still stands. Also, to be fair, I don't know if I can name one meme off the top of my head, as old fogies/posh Irish-English gentlemen like myself do not care to involve ourselves in such petty malarkey.
I TRULY do hope you understand my brand of humour by now, as I will point out (once more) that I was taking the mickey out of a certain katana-armed rodent.
Also, seeing as you now (hopefully) realize when I'm making a funny, I expect you to change this quoted post in full to a yellow comic sans font by high noon tomorrow, or we will have to settle this mano y mano. Face to face. Stubborn, old rock to sword-trained tree rat.
So, I will ask you ONE more time, Squirrel Boy:
ARE WE BLOODY CLEAR NOW, that...
1.) 84% of the time, talkinrock is (attempting) to convey some sort of humour that is either not AT ALL worthy of a laugh (or, rather, is just too intellectually advanced to be comprehended by the minds of you simple Yankfolk).
2.) 3% of the time is telling a funny that's at least worthy of a split-second chuckle.
3.) 9% of the time is typing out nearly unreadable run-on sentences, simply because he's too lazy to break up his jumbled phrases into grammatically correct sentences, that end with a full stop, rather than using excessive and improperly, placed, commas, and not even bothering to use the Oxford Press-style conjunctions that he was taught all those years ago.
4.) 5% of the time is not even bothering to sum up all of the separate percentages, so as to see if they total 100.
Hmmm.
I just realized I'm probably not the best person to be criticizing the "killing of a joke", as is evident by the above post.
