The good-old games of GOG are often hard to find and/or difficult to get working on modern machines. Many of them would warrant news of their release included in the 'Deals' forum; some would not. Therefore this thread proposes to be the compact depository of information regarding of classic games from GOG.com, as well as discussion concerning their deal-worthiness.

Special sales and promotions will continue to have their own threads.

Yes you can save.
Saving and restoring
Sarien.net offers savegames through browser bookmarks. When you press CTRL + 5 (to emulate F5), or type save, the url in the address bar changes, and a dialog appears, asking you to bookmark the current page. The bookmark is your savegame. It stores your location, position, inventory and game status. Note that the visual state of objects is not saved, as this might exceed the maximum url length.

It's a far better value to get the remake for $5 more on Steam imo... or hell, just wait for yet another daily deal on the remake and get it far cheaper than $10.

Huh, those graphics still look fine. The third one looked amazing IMO...definitely want to buy the third one, and maybe I'll get this...

I like GOG, but too many of their $9.99 price point games just aren't worth that price. I really like Serious Sam The First Encounter, but it should be at $5.99 and not $9.99.

Hmm, I was able to pick up both Serious Sam HD 1&2 for $7.50 total during Steam's summer sale. Seeing this $10 price point for the old version kind of makes me lol.

Sure, but you don't own those. Plus this version looks surprisingly good to me from the screen shots.

No, he owns them. I've played them with him. I also got them during the sale. That was an awesome deal.

Serious Sam HD is such a misnomer because Serious Sam has ALWAYS been in HD resolutions. It's a freaking PC game, we've had "HD" for the past 15 years.

Yep, probably higher resolution than the Xbox version

You don't own anything if it has activation. Actually owning something means it's worth more.

>> Serious Sam The First Encounter

Well, I guess for people with older PC's, or newer ones that can't run SS HD, this
release should do just fine.

Sorry, you don't get to decide what other people do or do not own. Once we buy it, it's ours.

Uh...okay, but you said you didn't buy it, so no, you don't own it.

No he doesn't. But if you buy a game off of Steam, you don't own it. You own only a license that can be taken away. Technically you don't even own your Steam account. Think about it. If Valve has the power to close your Steam account without warning, what do you own?

OMG Raptor..man it took me a minute to remember this game..I remember playing the hell out of it, probably pirated on 3.5" disks..what a blast from the past. Seriously tempted to get it!!

Oh WEIRD, I remember that game! Yeah, I played the demo back in the day.

I can't wait if GOG starts offering console games too as per that one poll :)

>> Raptor COTS 2010 Edition

HOLY FLIRKING SNIT!!!
INSTANT BUY!!!

I completely forgot about Mountain King Software.

Classical vertical SHUMP action!

Question: was it ported to Windows, or does it come packaged with DOSBOX?

===========================================================

Perhaps they can do the same for Galactix and Demonstar? If they don't want to include
updated graphics, that's okay, but at least have it released on GOG!

Now, if they could make a new game, with the characteristics of each of those three
games, add co-op, and many gamers would be uber happy!

There was this poll GOG did that they had listed I think on their main page, and I think someone here linked to. Anyway they were asking to pick the three systems you'd like to buy games from based on a specific list.

They didn't have everything and I can't remember what I picked...I think it was SNES, Genesis, and Dreamcast that I picked. (They didn't list NES or Saturn I don't think...or maybe that's backwards.) Anyway obviously that implies they're looking in to that, which would be awesome! Especially after losing $100 on Nintendo's system that doesn't even have a way to transfer content to a new Wii (even aside from the activation).

AFTER I buy them of course ;)

So is Total Annihilation worth playing if you're not nostalgic for it? I know it was/is a big deal. Did it have a story? Was it hard?

TA was so great. Played through te campaign ago a couple years back. Anyone know how this version compare to the one recently released on Impulse?

It's on the GoG forums. Supposedly, it's the same version.

There's a story, but they really just amount to level briefings. It's still a really great RTS game and is completely fun to play. I'd say it's one of the easier of the genre to grasp. Some of the later levels could be considered hard, but by the time you'll reach them you should fully understand what you need to be doing.

There's tons of content here between the main game and the expansions - air, sea and land battles and everything in between. Then you've got skirmish mode and about a zillion custom maps. It's definitely worth the price even today.
Updated OP for today's release of King's Quest 1+2+3 for $9.99.

The VGA remake of KQ1 is not included.
9.99 seems like a lot for those 3, especially if the VGA remake is lacking. You could probably find a full 7 game collection for that price or a little more if you looked around. Looks like it's $20 new on Amazon, for instance.

I agree. GOG's trying to sell DOS classics from 20 years ago for $10? Only three of them without the remake? No thanks.

Then again, I scoff at Virtual Console's prices, so I'm just an old CAG.

It needs to be pointed out, but the full 7 game collection is utter shit. For example, King's Quest 7 is unplayable due to a bug that can not be fixed using the version that ships with the collection. Also, the dosbox configurations for the previous 6 games need manual tweaking in order to get working at all. If GOG.com managed to tweak them appropriately and make them bug free, it may be worth the asking price for a painless experience.

The problem with these remakes is that they are not official, and they make non-canonical changes to the plot and world. Probably not a good idea to play them if you want the authentic experience.

Still Life was a very good game. I had a lot of fun playing through it. Interesting GOG sells this one but not "Post Mortem", which was the first of the series.

Updated OP for today's release of Age of Wonders for $5.99.

The Wizard's Throne & the hard-to-find Shadow Magic are also on their way! ($9.99 for them.)

The demo is worth downloading even if you are going to purchase the game as it contains some exclusive music tracks you can inject into the full version (which I will detail in a post later this evening.) [edit: later this weekend]

Huh, I guess I didn't know what Age of Wonders was. I thought it was a fantasy version of Age of Empires (maybe that was Age of Mythology or something?)

It was actually co-developed by Epic!

WOW... so they are getting Shadow Magic... that was VERY IMPOSSIBLE to find without paying out of your nose for the damn thing.

I picked up a solid copy from ebay, but damn I didn't see this anywhere.

GOG is honestly becoming awesome. I just wish I could afford all this digital 0's & 1's to fill up my virtual shelf.

>> Age of Wonders

I just looked at Amazon. Unless you're a collector, or someone who
must have a boxed copy, this is a really good deal. Those prices
are a bit high. Of course, the game sold for that, when it was
first released, so it's not that bad. Anywho, I'll take a look
at the game, and if I like it, I'll probably just get it from GOG.

=================================================

Another game, from the same era and also by Epic, would be
"7th Legion". It was a RTS, I think.

If Epic were to start bringing a bunch of their older games
back to market, make sure to get the oldies.
