Golden Axe 2 and the Six-Button/Mode-Button Dilemma for Sega Genesis

Hey guys (and gals),

Recently I got a hold of Golden Axe II for Sega Genesis. I was a happy gamer until I found out that the controls were glitchy, to say the least. A Game Crazy clerk cleaned the game, but that didn't do the trick.

I later found out that older games don't work properly with the six-button controller (of which I have two). Another GC clerk told me that you had to press the "Mode" button to switch back to the 3 button configuration. I tried that, but I still could not get my hack-and-slash on. Do I have a faulty cartridge? Has anyone ever successfully negotiated this type of problem? HELP!!!!!!

Just FYI - you have to hold the "mode" button down while turning the Genesis on to make it work like a regular 3-button controller. Then Golden Axe 2 should work fine. I had the same problem with Forgotten Worlds, escept it would just "restart" the game after the little introduction in 6-button mode..... Hope that helps..... :D

In response to your poll, I would love to see an updated Golden Axe however the one that's included in the upcoming PS2 Sega classics complilation is supposedly horrible (though I'd like to play it to form my own opinion).

Thanks for the advice, Captain_Insano16!!!

I've heard the same thing about that compilation, but I do want to try it for myself. How would an update on PSP sound? Quite sweet, indeed.

I have played the golden axe update from japan, it is the exact same as the genesis version except in 3D, but for the most part, all the stages are the same. Its a nice game for memories of the original one.

I learned about this the hard way. I had just cleaned the cart a week before (I clean every cart I get before I play it), so I figured it probably didn't work right with the 6-button because it was an older game. I didn't have any 3-button controllers at the time, so I picked one up a couple days later and sure enough, I was right.

I didn't know about the mode button trick until I read about this on another forum a few months ago, though. ](*,) Oh well, it's good to have a 3-button controller on hand anyways, and it only set me back a buck.
